The electronic kit I bought this year, it's an entry level Roland but with mesh heads all around. It's nice to be able to play again without annoying the neighbors.

Acoustic or electric? If the latter, Epiphone does a few budget lines of SGs and LPs, usually 2 or 3 lines under $300 per body style, can't go wrong with the second cheapest one of either style. I'm not crazy about any of the cheaper stuff on the Fender side personally.

Don't start with a used guitar unless you're absolutely certain it's in excellent shape, you do not want to be fighting a wonky instrument while you're starting out. Ask me how I know.

It’s hard to go wrong with an electric Squier these days as well. I’d go new too, but even their $200 guitars are pretty great. Yamaha would be my first choice for an acoustic, but Epiphone and Seagull are also generally pretty good. There’s a guitar thread in Musicians’ Lounge if you’re really in the weeds.

Thanks for all the recommendations folks!

How are the cheap yamahas? I see them and then I see “no-name” ones that look exactly the same. I think she’ll want an acoustic guitar (tho maybe an electric would be fun for her). She’s a pianist if that makes any difference in recommendations.

I have a no-name cheapo one and works fine. Haven't bothered to buy new hardware yet but works for my purposes of learning to play.

Computer stop-gap advice needed -- I'm using an old Dell with an i7-2600 and 8gb ram for now. I just got a nice LG 27" 4k monitor, but the old computer won't even drive it at full resolution, it tops out at 19x10. It's using internal Intel Graphics. What's a cheap reasonably modern graphics card that will preferably handle both monitors?

Plans are to have this one dumped to linux distro duty once I get a new system, so it's a permanent solution, but not one to dump a ton of money on.

Edit: looks like I'm looking for a PCI x16 card... I've been using laptops almost exclusively for a decade, so going back to a unit this old with desktop components is a bit of a learning curve.

Edit2: Looks like a 1050Ti would fit and work with the current power supply. Anything else I should consider?

That's awesome. I'm a drummer first and foremost (see Keith Moon avatar) but my house (2 bedroom) is too small to keep a drum set. I had a really nice Slingerland acoustic set for awhile set up in my son's room but it took up half his room and was too loud obviously. Then I had an electric set that had a smaller profile but it still took up quite a bit of room. I was hoping my son would take an interest, but he couldn't care less and it was unfair to him to have it in his room. I was thinking he'd get into it and we could jam and stuff, but he just wasn't into it unfortunately.

That's the one reason I'd like to have a bigger house with a garage, so I could have a proper drum set with a bass and guitar and some amps for jamming. I miss being in a band and just jamming out :(

Probably an RX 550 or GT 1030. Anything lower looks like they max out at 2560 x 1600. You might be able to get a B-Stock or used one to save a few more dollars. I haven’t used an AMD card with Linux, but I think the driver situation is much better than 10 years ago.

A brief look on eBay turned up a few good options, but I think I’d opt for the 1030. They’ve got passively cooled ones, which I’d definitely lean toward.

Do you game at all? If not, a GT 7xx will do 4k* (only at 30 hZ though). It's ~$50. Otherwise a 1030 is your best bet.

It was a metaphoric Linux reference. Plus, I see what the discussion here was earlier about video cards being hard to get... drat, Bezos is out of stock with everything. Got a 1050Ti coming, I'll try it and see if it works. It's got 2 HDMI, 1 Display Port and 1 DVI connector... if I can run 3 monitors from one card, I'd be super happy.

Also, I'm going to switch this to a SSD... it may be a viable thing for a bit with those two upgrades.

I'm running an i7 2600k (slight overclock, I think I'm running it at 4.1?) with a SSD, 32GB RAM, a GTX 960, and a very old SSD (Samsung 840 - not even the Evo, the OG 840 - I guess that'd be the Pro today?). It's PLENTY fast for everything I do (which includes plenty of Photoshop, Plex, some gaming, etc). I don't think it'd like serving up 4k transcodes (even if it tried, Plex doesn't do HDR), but outside of that it's great.

Chuck a SSD and bump that RAM to 16GB and you're good for a long time, just don't expect to play the latest and greatest most demanding games @ 4k.

e: running one monitor on DVI, one on Displayport (DP to DVI adapter), and connected to a TV over HDMI.

If I could only get to 16GB RAM... Dell 0gdg8y motherboard tops out at 8GB.

Looking at the specs on the vid card, it says it'll run 4 monitors, so my goal of 3 is no problem. Should be here later in the week... It's nothing exciting, but should be a world better than the integrated graphics that I'm using now.

Yeah, it can make you feel crazy when tests come back clean, but you're in enough pain to want to be in the ER. For me, it's just knowing that there is something wrong that's starting to make it bearable
In a weird way, it also helps that even though I feel more sick than I thought I could endure, I'm not really that sick in the medical sense, or in comparison with what I could be facing. Regarding Covid, everything I've been hearing from the doctors I hang out with is that Covid is weird and a lot of people have different experiences with the same disease. The thinking is that it actually attacks your circulatory system, so you get different long term symptoms depending on what part of your circulatory system it attacks.

We used to have this ancient set of sounds, they went up to something obnoxious like 32fr with these big handles you could put your entire hand into, so they looked like costume pirate hooks. They're what I'd use to scare the new kids at work any time I had access to the GU cart
But I've seen both scopes. I know that the rigid is less common now because it requires so much more sedation, but the flexible ones are usually ~19fr at the base (as opposed to the ~23fr rigid), and that's still not small. It's 6.3mm-ish, so about the size of a fine tip sharpie barrel instead of a round tip sharpie barrel. Whoopee

E: yeah, that's why I'm just happy my heart is ok and I'm not throwing clots, I've heard too many stories of strokes and heart attacks in young, healthy people that had recovered from COVID a few months prior
