I love open world jank and will be playing on release to be part of the Zeitgeisttm, despite my misgivings about how badly they fumbled the trans stuff and epilepsy.

I guess I'm looking a the life paths from the opposite perspective.

At first I was planning on street kid first because they were jack poo poo and have jack poo poo, therefore can't be reset to zero for plot rails reasons. Unlike Cool Nomad who had a whole life and sweet car outside the city.

Later, I decided that corpo "YOU R FIRED" is just more funny. Because I am shallow like that in my videogame character logic.

Now that I know slightly more right before launch, I still find it kind of nice that Of the three options, Jackie The Tutorial Man was already Corpo's friend :unsmith:

I don’t see a Nomad as having much other than their car so a reset to zero at the start should hopefully seem fluid and natural. I feel like the story is going to be, and this isn’t a spoiler just my thoughts cus I haven’t watched any spoiler videos so if I’m right it’s completely coincidental, nomad’s tribe gets wiped out and seeks new life in city with nothing but their car. But thinking about it as well I think corpo could be a decent start as well seeing as a corporate guy in the future might not really know his way around the city other than his way to work and home and a bar in between.

That's interesting, and good to know. And also weird, usually if the settings in a game are too high, I should have low framerate, but not miss a loving animation or have invisible objects.

I was gonna do street kid first and then corpo afterwards and then maybe nomad if I ever got around to it but someone else pointed out in the last thread that it’d be kinda neat to experience the game outside the city first then later enter the city not knowing who anyone was or how to get anywhere. Whereas being a street kid your whole background is knowing the streets but IRL you’re like, “I have to go where?” and pull up your map to find your objective that’s fifty feet away so I kind of like the idea of going nomad first time through for that reason. Plus if I gently caress up so bad on my character creation I can start my real first character as a street kid now that I know my way around n stuff.

That's an interesting point

Turin Turambar posted:

Because it's the closest to GTA style of games. Low life criminal from a gang. Nomad and Corpo are more original.

Kotor 2 wasn’t flat-out broken so much as it was flat-out unfinished. E.g dialogue missing because it was never recorded rather than it failing to load.

Yep. Geralt doesn't really fit the Mary Sue archetype. Mary Sues are generally completely free from weakness and an ideal version of a person who is frequently an author self-insert, which is basically worst of sins you can do as an author.

If Geralt was a Mary Sue character, he could just charge in and slay the poo poo out of big bads by flexing his mighty muscles and swinging his sword around Conan style. Instead he has to do investigative work and consult books and prepare potions. The people who do try to just go in with no investigation and swinging their swords around frequently get owned whenever he runs into some amateur monster hunter. You can get away with going in cold in the Witcher series on normal mode, but you'll frequently get owned by boss monsters or you'll have to hack away at them for ages while being vulnerable in harder difficulties. So both the narrative of the series of the series of monsters being scary along with the ludonarrative of getting owned on harder difficulties for not preparing links up pretty well.

Also Mary Sues tend to be generally loved by everyone. Geralt is almost universally feared, mistrusted, often hated and people occasionally try to skip out on the bill for his monster slaying either by refusing to pay up or by trying to murder him. Your average human from the hamlet of Goatfuck does not like him. He does get dragged into politics and intrigue pretty frequently, but even there he's frequently mistrusted.

He's also not the strongest at anything in particular. He's a better than human specialist who is a great fighter, flexible enough to boost himself with alchemy and knows a little bit of magic and so he can specialize even more to beat certain foes, but unless he's prepared he's in deep poo poo.

Also Mary Sue characters aren't universally bad either. Goku for instance is a Mary Sue style of character and he doesn't get this much hate. You can do a Mary Sue archetype well enough that people with enjoy them.

Judging by the Xbox One S gameplay stuff that leaked a couple of days ago, the streaming problems are serious. There was one part where the player was driving on the street and a huge chunk of the road didn't load in until they'd already crossed it, so you could see the geometry underneath the world. At least it doesn't cause things to fall through, however - it's just cosmetic, but the game engine appears to have problems prioritizing what objects to load in. You'd think that the road would have higher streaming priority than vending machines on the sidewalk.

Again, old build, ancient hardware, pre-patch, etc. etc.

In my experience almost all negative accusations that a character is a Mary Sue are based on either a misunderstanding of what a Mary Sue actually is or the assumption that every vaguely capable woman in media is a Mary Sue because misogyny I guess.

Star Wars the Force Awakens is the most popular of this misunderstanding I can think of. That movie sucked for a host of other reasons, but the woman protagonist was not one of them.

I love the Witcher 3 but 'super-strong slow-aging monster hunting detective who men fear (because they're ignorant) and women secretly desire (because he's hot as gently caress) who often decides the fate of nations' is literally the coolest thing a guy could be. There's even jokes in the game from other witchers about how Geralt is basically a rockstar who bangs all the ladies and consults with kings.

Yeah, the Mary Sue archetype is gender coded, though occasionally you get people saying "Gary Stu". Women characters get a lot more hate for the Mary Sue archetype, real or imagined, than men do because some men feel threatened by competent women.

Though sometimes the hate is justified and the character is a Mary Sue, regardless of sex or gender. When a Mary Sue character arrives in literature and it isn't handled well it is legitimately annoying. In successful stories, the introduction of the Mary Sue character will smash the narrative and the seeming reality of the story and dump the reader out of the story. Kind of like when you're deep into a song and some motherfucker has high gain on the guitar and the amp starts spitting out feedback. A Mary Sue to me is a lot like that nasty, discordant sound that fucks up music and splits yours ears, but instead they gently caress up a story. They're like narrative feedback.

At least to some people. Some people just like a power fantasy and that's cool if they do.
