Ambitious Spider posted:You Only Live Twice. What could go wrong with bond having fun adventures in Japan? The crew commentary track on this one is wild. There were some cultural differences. All I remember about the film itself is that the lairs were cool, there was a gyrocopter, and they scared Blofeld’s cat so severely that its trainer took the producers to court for compensation.

One of the reasons why Connery quit was that while they were shooting the YOLT in Japan, a paparazzi opened the toilet stall he was in and took pictures. I would too *ahem* lost my poo poo if my privacy was taken from me because I play secret agent in movies.

The film opens with Bond faking his death because he's become too recognizable.

Hah, reading this I was reminded of The Day Today, which I remember being a fantastic piece of British parody of news reporting in the 90s, and was a big jumping off point for Armando Iannuci and Chris Morris. But every so often, you get reminded that it was from the 90s in the UK. Big time.

Dr. Cox is the gruff arsehole whose prickly exterior hides a soft and vulnerable interior. And every character and the audience can see that, so we are supposed to love him. Despite the mean things he does/says, because "aww, you don't mean that, you are really a sweetiepie".

I randomly watched the Truman Show last night, and even though there wasn’t anything particularly rapey there was a scene where he got very hands-on with his wife that had me going ‘woah’. Doubt that would fly today.

I think of all the 90s Carrey movies The Mask was the one that's aged the best. He has that rapey moment in the Park, but the Mask is not supposed to be any kind of healthy outlet, it's unregulated id acting out a base-level infatuation, and that's the worst he gets. Plus that moment does call out how creepy his behaviour is, so it's obvious the movie knows that it's VERY bad behaviour that a lot of people mistake for romantic - Tina is visibly uncomfortable and the whole point of that moment is effectively to show that in some aspects of his life the Mask makes the situation worse, not better. Or at least to hammer it home to *stanley* because before that moment he kind of thinks of the mask as a good thing to use for a quick confidence boost as he begins to become dependant on it. Also Blades of Glory with Will Ferrel and Jon Heder has aged surprisingly well. You'd think it would be homophobic, but it's actually very genuine and sweet - the whole point of the characters arcs is that they are initially weirded out by skating with another man, but by Fire and Ice they have got over their hangups and are just willing to do whatever they need to regardless of what that means - they just want to skate. Heder even point out that they are getting weird looks and and Ferrel's just like "Ehhh, let em stare. They don't matter."

Cary Elwes is trying to step in and be the better man, au natural. He doesn't have a real good rapport with the kid but he's clearly started winning Maura Tierney's heart. It's not sexist, racist, transphobic or homophobic which is the usual cringe customers but it still felt wrong that a magic "curse" got Jim Carrey to basically cheat his way past The Man in Black.
