Capo is an officer position in the mob. From googling the Mars Society, Zubrin is an officer on their board. The poster has a negative view of the Mars Society and instead of referring to him as President of the Mars Society, he referred to him by the mob title.

That still leaves an obvious confusion of scale - why such a negative view of the Mars Society? Italian mafia is a pretty harsh comparison. I mean yes it's obviously a stupid society and I don't think you should give your money to them, but to the best of my knowledge they are less directly involved in murdering people than most of the thread regulars. If they have been Ubering it up, though, that would be additional good thread content that we should hear about.

Only tangentially related, but everyone should read The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi. Extremely powerful (and depressing, it's about being in one of the concentration camps), and there is lots of discussion about the kapos.

Since this is apparently troubling you deeply, I apologize for my split-second decision to derisively refer to the head of an organization as a capo - an Italian mafia slang term that also literally means head - in order to exaggerate for effect, mistakenly leaving the impression that I consider their activities to be genuine organized crime rather than just mildly sociopathic.

Mars colonization would almost certainly get a lot of people killed! My main objection is not with extra-terrestrial resource extraction itself, but that even with the most optimistic projections, Mars would be an absolutely miserable place for humans to live, and so I see charitable donation to their cause as akin to tossing coins to the East India Company Mark II. I also apologize for not elaborating on this further but it has been discussed ad nauseam in the space thread, which is the best place to revisit the debate if anyone is so inclined.

I feel like any technology meant to create habitability on Mars would be more useful to help us live on this planet more sustainably and comfortably (thinking especially of the "less than $5.50 a day" half of humanity), and much sooner used for that, if ever. But try raising venture capital for that idea.

Yeah, even the most inhospitable place on Earth is going to be easier to live on than anywhere on Mars. There would need to be a practical reason for a permanent colony, given the massive amount of resources required to get there.

I hope we've all learned a valuable lesson about how choosing to "exaggerate for effect" tends to make an absolute loving mess of a discussion, as people try to puzzle out why you're saying things that are both false and entirely unreasonable just for the sake of dumb shock value.

The major cards are pulling out because Mind Geek has apparently done jack and poo poo to keep revenge porn and other non-consensual recordings off of their services. Not to mention unverified and underage stuff.

i urge you to reconsider your stance here, pornhub specifically has had problems around the user-submitted video thing being a vehicle to distribute non-consensual aka literally rape porn for years. pornhub has demonstrated that they do not have policies in place to prevent their platform from being used as a method of distributing illegal and harmful content. at best they only remove this content, sometimes actual child porn, once called out by journalists. this is not an acceptable business practice

at the very least, try not to use the "think of the children!" cliche framing when part of the problem is in fact no poo poo child sexual exploitation

No. They pulled out because a nytimes piece that while they covered the stuff you mentioned, focused on the underage stuff because it’s the easiest pearl clutching to ever pearl clutch.

A study of the last 3 years showed there were 118 cases of child abuse underage videos on PH. In that same 3 year period? 84 million cases on Facebook Instagram. Should they have been better on revenge porn poo poo? Of course. But this whole thing has been pushed by conservative “non profits” about sex trafficking, which again, is mostly bs (and the best way to deal with that is to legalize and regulate sex work)

This is similar to when erotica was much more widely accessible on Amazon kindle and lovely journalists would post articles about “look at the smut you can buy!” And Amazon would overreact and ban writers who were making livings on it. I know several who got screwed over several times with their catalogs. That’s lovely.

Bottom line, they should have done better with revenge porn, but considering where these attacks are coming from this is another way (just like the nurse in that NY hit piece yesterday) of punishing sex workers trying to push the country to be even more puritanical and lovely, while letting the big companies get away with literal murder and far worse behavior because they are “legitimate”.

facebook isn't an actual pornography site though

imo i think it's pretty gross to argue "what about the sex workers? why are you so puritanical!" when trying to dismiss the claims of people who are opposing the distribution of rape, revenge, and child pornography

Am I 100% against revenge porn and child sexual exploitation? Of course. What I’m saying is that mind geek sucks for the first one plenty and being a weird Monopoly that controls most of pornography online 100%, but the child exploitation is far worse on other platforms that will not be targeted because most of the outrage is about sex work in general. Of course they should be better at regulating (or being regulated.)

it sucks for sex workers who are getting stung by the user-submitted porno site being unable to keep CSE off their platform but a website which allows for user-submitted porn absolutely has a higher duty to keep this content off their platform than what pornhub has been following. trying to equate porn sites to other social media sites is a weird comparison which effectively dismisses the CSE problem by backing up to a point of "well, why don't we just shut down the whole internet, huh?"

and for real, calling people who want a crackdown on CSE and revenge porn "puritanical right wingers" really does make you sound like a creep
