Because the stuff you were taught in primary school was simplified for small children and you were supposed to learn the more complex version later, but then they never bothered teaching you that bit so you just went on believing the simplified (ie. incorrect) version. Letters aren't vowels, sounds are. Those sounds are usually represented by the letters A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y, so it's common to refer to the first five of those (and in America, sometimes Y) as vowels themselves. But they're not.
