Ok so I've been really looking forward to the VR mode and for me, I am not disappointed. I never really liked x-plane's use of hand controls because my yoke, desk, monitor etc always got in the way of the controls anyway so I ended up using the mouse there and the mouse implementation here is similar. Performance when I first started was pretty rough but I was able to tweak it to be acceptable and mostly smooth. I'll go over my gear here to see if any of this is helpful.

I have a 9900k (overclocked to 5.0ghz) and a 2080 (non TI, non super, overclocked +125mhz with the memory clock +500mhz). An AIO water cooler for the CPU, standard cooling on the GPU. Using an Oculus Quest 2 with a 3rd party USB 3.0 cable as a link cable. I have the render resolution turned up in the Oculus application to 1.2x (3920x1984) at 90hz.

I left all the graphics settings in MSFS at default except resolution scale which defaults to 80. I bumped it up to 100 because the instruments were a bit blurry. Everything was still really choppy at that point so I started up oculus tray tool and made a profile for MSFS that forces ASW (Oculus motion smoothing called Asynchronous Space Warp) to 30hz. This locks the framerate at 30FPS and it interpolates the in-between frames to make it smooth in the headset. This was the key that unlocked the good stuff. On the ground you will still get some hitches but a couple thousand feet up and everything is nice and smooth. I haven't played with any of the pop-out windows like ATC or the map yet but I'm super impressed and happy with this.

ASW in Quest 2 will do 45hz, half of 90hh, not 30hz. And given he already has a better cpu and gpu than me... yeah maybe I will try it in two years.

I get this funky high on the yellow sun.

Just got an Index over the weekend and it has blown all my expectations out of the water. Only played Alyx/Pistol Whip/Superhot so far but I already know this was well worth the price after probably a year or so of being indecisive about pulling the trigger on it. One question: are there any rumblings about it eventually getting a wireless adapter or that probably still a long way off? Most of what I see is all clickbait type articles just randomly speculating. Definitely not an easy task having to replace power/USB/displayport all at once, but man that'd be freeing to just have no tether (though ultimately I'd rather have it and the high quality vs no wires plus a lower quality product).

Quest 2 will do 30hz but you have to use the debug tool or oculus tray tool to force it. Oculus tray tool is better because you can set a per game profile and it detects the game on launch and changes the ASW setting accordingly.

Works great.

I would think it would do 36 Hz instead (72 / 2). AFAIK the panel supports 72 and 90 Hz, not 60.

30 is a multiple of 90 and I guess it interpolates 2 frames instead of one. It’s a drop down pick in the menu and the performance HUD shows 30FPS and it’s a lot smoother than real 30FPS would be so it’s definitely working. I have no idea if it works in 72hz mode because I haven’t used that mode since 90hz mode was enabled.

It supports 60, 72, 80 and 90. I think only the last 3 are selectable with Link, but you can use 60hz in Virtual Desktop.

Does PD matter for prescription lens inserts?

I preordered some Reverb G2 lenses from VROptician two weeks ago, but at the time it didn't have any option for PD. Shrugged it off and placed an order... but now there is a PD option?? I thought maybe the headset lenses adjust physically so it doesn't matter.

edit: apparently it only matters if u fall outside of normal range

I would think it's unlikely there will be a wireless adapter for the Index. You might get away with a backpack-laptop setup but between the need for the base stations anyway and the HDMI/USB hookup I don't see Valve being that interested in it.

Got my Quest 2 in and I'm struggling to commit to buying a game because everything on the Oculus store is full priced. I was hoping for at least some deals to go with all the other stores doing holiday sales :smith:

I walked around Anne Frank's house and am now charging it, lol. The glasses spacer is pretty nice and definitely makes a difference when I can jam my glasses in there too.

You can get a lot out of free games like Echo VR, Poker Stars, Rec Room, Alt Space, Big Screen.

The top games like Superhot, Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Moss, are worth full price imo.

MSFS2020 is playable on a 3080 / 3800x / rift s.

it's rough in places but boy is it pretty mindblowing, especially cruising at ~600' or so. I have everything set to ultra with vehicles / etc at ~95-98%. It looked like I was getting 45ish fps, but steamvr and the nvidia FPS counter don't love each other so  -- looking around and over my shoulder fairly quickly / at natural speeds does not seem choppy.

I'd call it slightly nausea inducing, but I seem to be developing ocular migraines or something unrelated ( :smith: ) so take that into account

In addition to the free stuff already mentioned there are demos for a lot of games on there. I'm pretty sure there's a Beat Saber demo and a Superhot demo.

Oh, and if you install Sidequest there's a ton of cool free stuff on there including a bunch of multiplayer games and ports of PC games (like Return To Castle Wolfenstein and Quake 2).

Disco all night long!

Talking about free poo poo on Sidequest, there's a virtual boy emulator, virtualboygo that's free and the experience playing virtualboy games on a Quest is infinitely better than on original hardware.

I might be biased, being the only person here probably who's owned multiple Virtual Boys and had one in the 90s. But there are some actually solid games still worth playing today with a cool sense of depth. Maybe not the most immersive, but good. Panic Bomber VB is awesome and has some good 3d effects, VB WarioLand would be solid even if it wasn't a VB game, Mario Tennis, Galactic Pinball, Space Squash are all really cool games.

I know it sounds kinda crazy because the system sucked but playing those games on a modern headset really is that much better. And it's free so whatever. The original hardware did not do a good job of creating a sense of "this is all life size" and the display was pretty fuzzy (though cool in a super 90s way), but emulated it just isn't like that anymore.

Oculus just had a store wide coupon for 25% off your purchases. It looks like it expired yesterday and now they're doing daily deals on different games, with today being Gun Club for $14.

If the display was fuzzy, your focus was out of adjustment.

The other problem is you listed pretty much every good VB game, as there was only about a dozen total released. I had one and every game I could locate, and it just just a very inconvenient way to play videogames.

What do we think is the cause of the woeful performance? All my settings are already very low... any chance it improves some or do I just need an otherworldly beast of a PC to play this?

Eh, I think of that as more blurry than fuzzy when the focus was off. Like I said, I've owned multiple, American and Japanese models, and they were all like that. It's a hard thing to explain but I think it was just because of the limitations of 90s red leds bouncing off mirrors. If I could explain it better I think you'd know what I mean, check it out in an emulator and compare.

And there were at least 20 games! But, yeah that is about it for the good ones. Maybe Jack Bros or Nesters Funky Bowling were good too, I just couldn't afford them

I got a reverb because the hardware is better and after owning a rift S I never want to own oculus hardware again; it's cheaply made and FB sucks and is a terrible company.

the main thing I care about at present is driving and flying games, but I've played a lot of beat saber and alyx and stuff... I don't find cables that obnoxious.

When someone who isn't facebook makes a set better then the reverb in terms of resolution, which is also wireless, sure :)

I was getting 35-40fps in desktop mode with a 3070, so this performance in VR with a 3080 doesn't surprise me. The game is incredibly resource intensive; it may be that performance will be substantially improved with patches, but it may also be that it takes another year or two and another generation or two of GPUs before this is something that sings at 120 fps.

I found there's a sweet spot: get too low, it's both choppier and looks shittier. 600' over Sydney, almost felt like looking around inside a little plane.

I'm just remembering it from owning one like 25 years ago, so I'm sure some things aren't quite right in my memory.

And after getting the Waterworld game and then immediately regretting owning the system, I understand why it tanked. I had no idea there were that many games, but it's unlikely worth it to see a red bowling game, even if it featured a weird character from Nintendo Power.

as far as I can tell there is at present no way to play the MS Tetris Effect: Connected in VR on the PC. I believe this is something they are hoping to address with a patch.

I don't think it "runs like poo poo" as much as it's just an incredibly demanding game. You can turn down various settings and get a relatively decent experience on non cutting edge hardware.

It's also as CPU bounded as GPU bounded, as far as I can tell. I will be interested to see how my FPS changes when I upgrade from a 3800x to a 5800x or 5900x later this year.
