Merry Christmas, AI. I got an early present: my COVID test came back positive. Yay. We go and knock out all our Christmas errands and go to a doctor's appointment for the first time in 6+ months, and end up catching it. I can't wait for this poo poo show of a year to be over.

Upside: it's a Fram filter, so it was due for replacement the day before it was installed.

Woke up to a car bomb for Christmas this year. I’ve slept through tornados and we were 5-7 miles away and it shook the house. It’s insane someone parked an RV downtown Nashville with speakers announcing it was about to detonate and to evacuate. I will find the security camera link this is insanity https://youtu.be/5nygTJeu9fU

My wife's cousin lives about a half mile from there. She says it woke her up. From what I've read, police were able to go door-to-door and evacuate people such that nobody's been killed.

They knew this hub that no one else knew about on the most expensive street in Nashville exactly where to put it. Still on lockdown everyone thinks something else waiting somewhere. My friends, if i could lend you some christmas wisdom, it would be to NOT spear yourself onto a tree stump on the morning of christmas eve. Was cutting trees down for Koala food, had running chainsaw in right hand, piece of tree in left hand, turned to pull tree out of the scrub, tripped on a stump in the long grass and went down on another stump and took it up my arm and into my arm pit. Didnt get myself with the chainsaw fortunately! That one stings, and catches on EVERYTHING. And you can even see the size of the stump i landed on because it left a loving mark to measure it off! Two days later this itches and catches on EVERYTHING and the bruising has started in my arm pit. I have had an absolutely awful Christmas because It hurt to breath, or sneeze, or cough, or eat, or sit, or lay, or move or lift or do ANYTHING. It even hurts to sleep because I'm a left hand side sleeper. loving 2020 can just be over and loving done with. Now im bored out of my mind and still hurting cos I cant do ANYTHING, and ive got what i suspect is mild ADHD so I cannot sit still without going out of my mind.

kastein posted:Holy poo poo dude, hope everything goes ok. Thanks. We've both got relatively minor symptoms. Wife feels like she's got a bad head cold and loss of sense of taste. I had a low grade fever and a cough for a day, and now I have the worst body aches I've ever had. It feels like someone beat my chest, arms, and back with a wiffle bat. The worst part is that it meant my mom was alone for Christmas. She's been part of our bubble all year, and the last time I saw her was the final F1 race on the 16th. She made latkes, we decorated her house, and we all had a good time. Two days later, we went to the doctor's appointment and ran our errands, with the plan to get tested a week later to ensure we were safe to see her for Christmas Eve. We had big news that we were planning on breaking, but that's been delayed because of the 'Vid. She's had an awful year: 3 brain tumors, 16 rounds of chemo, being completely trapped in her house, and now this. She deserves so much better, and I feel like we let her down. Who knows if she'll even make it to Christmas next year. My MiL works retail, and that means that we haven't really seen her since March. She's dangerously depressed and Christmas is like her FAVORITE thing. We were going to set my shop up with a tree and lights, and have her, her partner, and my BiL over to open presents wearing masks and staying physically separated. 2000sqft with the bay doors cracked and game on meant we could have actually spent an hour or two together safely. I was going to cook 2 separate meals, and we could eat in 2 separate rooms. All that planning and anticipation went out the window because we weren't careful enough. It just sucks. The kicker: the contract tracers that called my wife said they think ~2% of the population that's out in public has COVID right now. That means that: 1. It's impossible for them to do their jobs, 2. That even wearing a mask and trying to stay socially distant doesn't protect you if you're spending more than a few hours in public places because you'll end up with >15 minutes of cumulative virus exposure, and 3. There's going to be a huge spike in deaths in the next 4 weeks as Christmas infections and people insisting on travelling combine.

The most we can hope for is a mandate for vaccination to return to school, and even that is unlikely because we have no widespread testing on young children. We're going to see 500,000 dead before deaths plateau, and even then I doubt we'll have enough doses available for everyone who wants them. This is true, but I'm pretty sure people will be required to have the vaccine before boarding an aircraft. Hell they may even require you to have the vaccine in order to buy groceries.

So I gave the Lenovo Smart Clock a sidelook a few weeks back when I saw them at Walmart. Been wanting to finally give up any semblance of privacy and dive into a Google Home speaker of some kind, but I wanted something small with a display. Hell, I just wanted a working alarm clock that isn't my phone again (thanks to wire eating cats, my phone sits in a drawer when charging). Fuckers are on sale for $40. I finally bit. It's a bit limited in what it can do - it's an alarm clock first, Google Assistant second - but it at least has Bluetooth + supports casting audio (no video unfortunately). Neat little thing even if it's a little crippled compared to a full on smart display. Unfortunately no radio, but it did come with 3 months of Pandora Premium and 2 months of Calm Premium (Calm is pretty awesome if you have trouble sleeping, but drat it's expensive if you want more than a couple of sleep stories). Calm didn't want a CC; Pandora did, but my bank has a browser plugin that generates a virtual CC # anytime it sees a CC field. Made a virtual card, Pandora did the preauth to make sure it's valid, then I deactivated the card. gently caress you, auto-renewing poo poo. sharkytm posted:The kicker: the contract tracers that called my wife said they think ~2% of the population that's out in public has COVID right now. Already had two scares, one positive antibody test (but two negative infection tests), and the dry erase board they're using to inform us of new cases in the store is getting updated daily now instead of every few weeks. On top of that, last night I went in at midnight and got off at 8:30 this morning.. meaning I was around customers for 2 1/2 hours (we open at 6). Hope you guys have a quick recovery, and I hope your mother and MiL stay well. When Houston got hammered, contact tracers and their public health authority were estimating much more than 2% - they were thinking closer to 10%. We're in our... third? wave here; we're in better shape than the rest of the state, but our idiot governor retweeted a video of a large indoor Christmas church service... saying "who said Austin is locked down?". As far as Christmas, it was even shittier than I expected, but not by much. I didn't get a single gift or card or anything from anyone. I called my Mom and Step Dad, and I got a stupid meme in a group Facebook message from one of my sisters, that's it. I gave my wife a gift card (didn't even put it in a Christmas card or envelope), and my kids really loved their gifts. It could have been a worse day but at the same time I cant help but think I would have been better off not there. It's important to be there for my kids, but it's also important to not fight in front of them. A Christmas ham was made, it's delicious but I can't force myself to eat any of it. I've lost about 6 pounds in the past two days, it's unhealthy as hell but I am obese (my BMI is 31, anything over 30 is clinically obese) and I guess loosing weight is a good thing. I just look forward to going back to my lousy, crappy retail job tomorrow where I will at least be around people (young teenagers) who will fake being friends with me. The AT&R RV thing is pretty hosed up. I guess this could be a foreign terrorist, I just think it was internal. If it was foreign, I would expect them to hit a more high profile city like NYC or LA, unless they just really hate country music. Was there anything else of value like a bank or big office building nearby? I am surprised that it took out 911 service for such a large area, they should have redundant capabilities. At the very least, I'm sure 911 call centers have their own redundant power source and redundant radios if necessary, but I guess you cant make a redundant AT&T data center. Don't they have communication lines from another provider, like maybe Verizon or the local Cable monopoly?

Pretty solid info that it was a direct attack on AT&T's secret building. I have been looking at smart displays but we are overloaded with Amazon alexa's and smart plugs I probably don't have $100-125 total in the all, balls deep in that infrastructure and i snap them up when they have stupid deals. It just works. A new $399 Nvidia card is coming out that is supposed to be amazing...but who knows if you will be able to find it.
