POS are still in the game because CCP dont know how the code works and if they remove it the entire game will implode

To elaborate a bit on this: POSs were one of the first "major" additions to the game that basically had to be coded from the ground up and the functionality was pretty much hacked together by one guy that got fired like fifteen years ago. Pretty much every player deployable structure and capital ship, as well as a bunch of other stuff including huge swaths of the production tree, has code dependencies built on the back of POSs because when CCP was in "agile" development about a decade back they just kept reusing broken poo poo instead of writing proper code from the ground up because it'd take too long to add features.

And yeah, nobody has any clue how or even why it works and loving with it at all makes the game fall over.

I tried playing eve a few years ago as member of goonswarm, it was sort of fun because they were in the middle of previous war. But there 2 problems.

1. Goon culture felt kind of wrong, it was like somethingawful but 8 years ago. They try to keep general eve toxicity in check but it still rubs off and noticable
2. Game itself, the interface is atrocious. It is such a disaster I cannot think of another computer program to compare it to.

I eventually went off exploring wormholes, got lost in them, logged off and than decided to not play this game ever again

Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
I remember reading about hulkageddon, and thinking that was pretty funny

and then years later I read a... god, it was like a 3 page rps article about an irl blood money rich dude (defense contractor or something) backdoor funding this ridiculous multi-faceted insurrection against the goon status quo involving a betrayal with a bunch of pissed of Serbs? and that article ended with goons on the ropes but in cheerful spirits, having adopted a fun-sounding guerilla strategy

glad to see things worked out and the war rages on
will probably enjoy reading more spreadsheet game war stories in the future

UM excuse me, where does the extra mass come from to “regenerate” the armor? The first law of thermodynamics states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. Are we to believe that this is some sort of (heh) magic space castle?

I got as far as the part of the tutorial where it was like “here’s the excel spreadsheet to track your sales.” And was like “I don’t even do the spreadsheets I get paid to do at my job, why the gently caress would I want to do them in space?” Anyway long story short I’m unemployed so maybe I finally have the spare time to get back into Sins of a Solar Empire.

I was mining with goons in some like 0.0 space or something and had an NPC pirate ship spawn on top of me (like literally partially through the ship or something) and it destroyed me in 3 seconds. After logging off my computer poo poo the bed a few days later so I took that as a sign.

It’s fun to see goons pissing nerds off, though!

It works in eve because goonfleet has been de facto RPing the evil empire driving the whole game's meta and politics for like 15 years now. No player or NPC faction in any other MMO has ever done the evil empire as well as goonfleet, and lot of this came down to toxic goons method acting terrible space people. In the end it was a huge boon to the game, and also to Iceland's economy.

When I joined goonfleet in 2008 I was auto-assigned to a squad where everyone laughed at me for playing eve, with an auto-assigned mentor who hadn't logged in in a year. There was no newbie frigate program, only a badly stocked market in AZN, so once they got you to 0.0 as a newbie the only way to survive was to prostitute yourself, performatively saying and doing newbie-esque things in fleets before your character got too old so that older goons would call you a cute newbee and shower you with isk.

All I'm saying is that goonfleet was the perfect place and time for those goons. Maybe without goonfleet Mittani would have started a warhammer themed death cult irl. Maybe kartoon (pbuh) would have become a literal islamic suicide bomber. Maybe Blawrf would have been the guy scamming our grandparents on the phone. Letting them all just run amock in a videogame was the lesser evil.

WE LOVE SHOOTING GAMES!

Fun Shoe
Not EVE, but this thread makes me nostalgic for when I played the EVE knockoff, Astro Empires with fellow goons. I think VileRat was part of that GoonSquad, too.

I have fond memories of taking part in GOONion's raid on the Beta server's first Death Star, the largest unit in the game (and also worthless for anything but defense), which took literal months to construct at the time. The tears (and soup/debris) when we destroyed it was delicious.

I wish I still had time to devote countless hours to spreadsheet games.

Man, I've enjoyed reading about EVE drama since like, high school, but the game itself just doesn't do anything for me. It is aggressively boring, and I didn't feel like taking a correspondence course in order to learn how to play well enough to milk tears and drama.

Goon speed to all of you crazy nuts who actually like this game.
