I've worked in Mortgage, insurance, and vehicle finance for a total of 10 years now. Let me assure you that people being awful with money is the standard, not "assuming the worst". Entire industries are built on this fact. It's real easy to say "Well if I made 6 figgies per month I'd definitely invest in my 401K, IRA Roth, max out my HSA, and build up my savings!" but in reality once people see money like that coming in they turn to "Well I should buy a new car, I EARNED IT!" and then they never stop feeling like they earned countless luxuries until they're out of money. See: Lottery winners, professional sports players, people who inherit money from rich relatives
