Then Stu Block joined a decade ago with his caricature of heavy metal voices, and I realized Iced Earth was just really into sounding silly. I'd suggest Follow the Reaper or Hate Crew Deathroll over Hatebreeder for a first listen. The production on Hatebreeder is a little dry.
