I'm pretty iffy on scenes in adventure games that kill you for walking into them. Obviously you're supposed to save early, save often, but it still feels like a cheap shot.

Will there be a sidebar to talk about the short ending somewhere?

InwardChaos
Oct 21, 2010

Before the beginning of great brilliance, there must be chaos.
I remember playing this game when I was younger, though I don't remember if I ever actually beat it. I can sort of remember what comes next, but not the ending.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember trying to touch the red roses around Belle's house causes a death. It's the "magic" she speaks of in the line about the roses being the only magic she'll ever see.

I've actually already gone over most of the changes: namely the short ending involves playing hide and seek in the castle. Otherwise, it's just the exact same as the long ending we'll be seeing in a few weeks, but not as complete.

It sounds like something that would be possible, but when I tried just now I wasn't able to get cause the death. Trying to use the roses just gets the line "Alexander hasn't been invited to pick the family's roses." Though I did manage to cause the background music from the town, the nightingale tree, and Beauty's house to all play on top of each other. ...Somehow.

It's also extremely generous that the game gives you two gulps of the "DRINK ME" bottle. I feel like previous games you'd drink the whole thing once, have to noodle it out, then re-load a save before you chugged it the first time.

Also I can't wait for the long ending content :black101:

King’s Quest V did just that with the brass bottle kill, expecting you to know to use it to get rid of the witch in the forest to proceed after you killed yourself with it.

Yeah, the genie's bottle in King's Quest 5 only lets you know what it does by having you use it and die. A lot of items are like that in KQ5, or the game lets you use them in the wrong place, and it's just downright evil.

Alex will fill the lamp to the brim with fountain water every time, so it has to be done last. And if you hosed up and used the sacred water and the fountain before tears? Then you are locked out of the long ending path.

I don't believe this is true. I've tried to get the fountain water early at least once, hoping to save some time, but the narrator says that the lamp isn't ready for the fountain water yet and nothing happens.

When you get the fake and give it to Jollo for the ol' swaparoo he goes "wow this is amazing, how did you know?" and Alex basically winks at the audience...because he clearly can't have known. No attempt is made at a diagetic explanation for your knowledge.

I think the closest it ever got was The King's Quest Companion novelizing the game; Alexander noticed a particularly beautiful blue cut-glass bottle sitting on Alhazred's desk as he was being escorted out of the Castle of the Crown post-audience.

Which is still better than explaining how the hell you were supposed to know "put bridle on snake" back in the King's Quest II era.

The next section is extremely memorable and 100% exclusive to the long path, so it should be easy to figure out depending on whether or not you recognize the next few updates.

It's actually kind of wild how much the two paths differ. They both come together to the same end, but there's so much potentially skippable content and I've never seen another adventure game try this kind of storytelling.

Except maybe for the Quest for Glory games, but they're designed around the idea of diverging character builds, so they have to write alternatives to accommodate your playstyle.

Now that I think about it, didn't Roger Wilco also dress in women's clothes in the Space Quest game that came out around this games release?
