The uh, druids' robe colours are kind of unfortunately skin-like. For a moment I was worried you'd accidentally booted up Leisure Suit Larry instead.

I'm pretty iffy on scenes in adventure games that kill you for walking into them. Obviously you're supposed to save early, save often, but it still feels like a cheap shot.

So one has to wonder how many times Alhazred's pants have gone missing under mysterious circumstances...

Will there be a sidebar to talk about the short ending somewhere?

I remember playing this game when I was younger, though I don't remember if I ever actually beat it. I can sort of remember what comes next, but not the ending. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember trying to touch the red roses around Belle's house causes a death. It's the "magic" she speaks of in the line about the roses being the only magic she'll ever see.

Quackles posted:Will there be a sidebar to talk about the short ending somewhere? Otherwise, it's just the exact same as the long ending we'll be seeing in a few weeks, but not as complete. It sounds like something that would be possible, but when I tried just now I wasn't able to get cause the death. Trying to use the roses just gets the line "Alexander hasn't been invited to pick the family's roses." Though I did manage to cause the background music from the town, the nightingale tree, and Beauty's house to all play on top of each other. ...Somehow. The maiden's clothes thing really confused my younger self. I didn't realize that you didn't even need them. In an adventure game. The genre where you take anything not nailed down.

It's also extremely generous that the game gives you two gulps of the "DRINK ME" bottle. I feel like previous games you'd drink the whole thing once, have to noodle it out, then re-load a save before you chugged it the first time. Also I can't wait for the long ending content

King’s Quest V did just that with the brass bottle kill, expecting you to know to use it to get rid of the witch in the forest to proceed after you killed yourself with it.

Yeah, the genie's bottle in King's Quest 5 only lets you know what it does by having you use it and die. A lot of items are like that in KQ5, or the game lets you use them in the wrong place, and it's just downright evil.

Then you are locked out of the long ending path. I don't believe this is true. I think the closest it ever got was The King's Quest Companion novelizing the game; Alexander noticed a particularly beautiful blue cut-glass bottle sitting on Alhazred's desk as he was being escorted out of the Castle of the Crown post-audience. Which is still better than explaining how the hell you were supposed to know "put bridle on snake" back in the King's Quest II era.

I don't normally obsess over grammar but this is one of those mistakes that really gets under my skin, for some reason. E'er is the poetic shortening of "ever", Ere is a poetic way of saying "before".

So I played this as a kid, and eventually had to rely on a walk through book (I think it came with the game, had a cool red filter thing to hide the answers.) I did not realise at all that there were two paths, and I'm desperately trying to remember which path I took.

The next section is extremely memorable and 100% exclusive to the long path, so it should be easy to figure out depending on whether or not you recognize the next few updates.

It's actually kind of wild how much the two paths differ. They both come together to the same end, but there's so much potentially skippable content and I've never seen another adventure game try this kind of storytelling. Except maybe for the Quest for Glory games, but they're designed around the idea of diverging character builds, so they have to write alternatives to accommodate your playstyle.

I remember the flying horse sequence was quite memorable back in the day, it's nice to see it still holds up pretty well. So does 6 in general - sure I knew it was good and I liked it but I haven't thought about it outside this thread in years and, well, still does just fine.

Hmm I guess you do need the maidens clothes in the long path, just not as a disguise. Or maybe Alexander is in to that sort of thing, I won't kink shame. Now that I think about it, didn't Roger Wilco also dress in women's clothes in the Space Quest game that came out around this games release?

Yeah, he had to wear a dress to fool an ATM camera in Space Quest IV so he could steal a bunch of money from a debit card. (It's... complicated.)
