I'd imagine that, considering the likely massive amounts of candidates that they would've gotten for EN Gen 1, it's not impossible that they have a backlog of entertainers that were just as good as the HoloMyth girls - but there were only 5 slots available. Has that ever happened on the JP gens? I'm going to assume that by the 3rd or 4th gen they would have already a healthy backlog of talents, I'm not sure. I know at least Nene had to apply 3 or 4 times until she got the role.

She'd send an application, wait 2 weeks to see if she got a reply, then send out another.

uh is it standard for idol companies to debut new members into perpetuity? I never watched any idol anime and don’t particularly follow any of these pop groups I understand Niji has something like 100 talents, and Hololive/Holostars is smaller and structured differently, but I feel like expecting or wanting a 6th wave of Hololives is wild. The cast as it is seems manageable and comprehensible. More EN people would make sense and it could arguably be its own money printing machine as old YouTube channel giants splinter and disintegrate like the Yogscast and Rooster Teeth or whatever content tax: is Rushia’s whole bit being loud, and then shy, and then loud? loud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6C4fUVHrRo quiet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SybLZ5Y8hvE e;fb

As far as Hololive goes, no one knows if they want to go the Niji route where they have hundreds of streamers. The talents themselves have said they like the family feel of Hololive and the collaborative nature of the streams definitely are a major selling point, so from what we can gather right now, probably not endless generation releases. What number they feel is good, who knows, but another EN generation is probably on the docket.

wolfs posted:uh is it standard for idol companies to debut new members into perpetuity? I mean the industry is still pretty new as a whole, but we're definitely not near the cap yet. Every new Hololive generation has been exploding in popularity more than the last, while older ones also balloon in popularity. There's no reason for them to -stop- debuting new generations when it's literally printing money for them.

wolfs posted:uh is it standard for idol companies to debut new members into perpetuity? For groups to add new members usually happens as other members leave, big groups like Morning Musume or the AKB48 universe of groups will add members constantly as they find new talent (or potential talent in the AKB sense, hence the AKB Cafes acting as training enviroments). Hololive's approach is more akin to companies that are always debuting new groups, whose member lineups are expected to be more static over time. You're not expected to follow every group under the company's banner, just the groups and members you like. Remember that Hololive is only up to I think 42 members, so they've got a way to go until they're even close to how many members are in the AKB stable of groups yet.

That is even assuming that they don't explore local markets directly like South Korea, Germany, France, latin america, etc. there is still room to grow and the diference is that the talents don't graduate once they are slightly above 18 years old.

The bigger difference between huge idol groups and V-Tubers/Hololive is that since this isn't a real idol group, they're not suffering from 16 hour a day high intensity practices, management controlling every aspect of their lives, and a very different type of perception from the public eye. No beauty standards, no getting "graduated" for being too old, none of the traditional toxic music industry/idol things that lead to early retirement, major health issues, or in the worst cases death. Some of those things still exist to a lesser degree in the V-Tuber sphere, but I would gander that becoming a streamer for years on end is much easier when you're also behind a 3D avatar than traditional companies or Twitch streamers too, since you get to retain and pretty high amount of animosity when you turn the stream off. Stress, burnout, and pressure from the public will still happen but at a much slower pace than any idol group meaning there doesn't have to be a never-ending supply of new stars for Cover or Niji but at some point they're going to end up either hitting diminishing returns or V-tubing will just be the next step of regular twitch streaming/content creation and will survive pretty indefinitely.

That's not really what menhera is and actually kinda trivializes what it's supposed to represent: a stylistic manner of expression built around depression and mental illness, which are often ignored in Japanese society. Riamu specifically doesn't even really do what you described; her character suffers from depression and mostly hates herself and other idol otaku, which is definitely a mood. Obviously, it's taken to something of an extreme with her and, in some cases, Menhera-chan, but "bipolar switching between tropes" isn't representative of its subculture, at least how it was just a few years ago.

Several streamers in Hololive, even Korone, like to do the "no watching any other girls" schtick and I don't think it's motivated by wanting to monopolize their viewers' wallets. And Rushia was absolutely leading her audience on to buy those snacks from under her because you can walk into nearly any supermarket or convenience store and buy them without issue, not to mention a selection of other online shops. I was watching that moment live and she got so many "pity" SCs from that bit. She knows what her audience wants.
