The election in question is the presidential election of 1988, held January 31. and February 1. It was the first direct presidential election in Finland but since no candidate got over 50% of the votes the election went on to a second round where it was decided by an electoral college, as it had been done previously. It was also the last election to use electors. Mauno "Manu" Koivisto was elected for a second term and in 1991 presidents were limited to two six-year terms.
