Just found a neat little app for SteamVR called "Desktop+", it's free and lets you basically place windows or the entire desktop, into VR space. It's a bit tricky to set up initially (I just clicked every button until stuff started making sense, the documentation is lacking) but the end result is I now have a gaze-activated Firefox window in my cockpit that I'm using for approach charts and moviewatching. Haven't found a noticable performance hit yet so I'm quite pleased with it, especially for free! It's not just for browser stuff, any window can be used (useful for something like Little Navmap, for instance). I know there are other programs that have similar functionality but this is the first free one I found that is actually useful and fast. Certainly makes VR flying a lot more fun now that I can check weather and charts easily without having to constantly take the headset off because I already forgot what the wind speed and direction was in the time it took me to switch back.

Oculus could do this, albeit a little buggy, with the native oculus app. If you were fairly comfortable in the headset, it was super fun to watch netflix in a cockpit at night with just the glow of the instruments and your movie.

I might try this soon because I think I just got a 3080 from an amazon drop, fulfilled by Amazon and at retail. :woop: Hoping that'll make my VR experience a lot less chuggy.

Yeah and I was always jealous of all the Oculus elitists and their free in-headset desktops for that exact reason! This is specifically for SteamVR though, so now I can finally watch internet porn on my Vive at 32.000ft in turbulent IFR conditions. Living the dream!

3090 and a G2 is a fantastic experience, you should be mega-pleased with the 3080. Still can’t max everything out, but you don’t really notice if you turn the right stuff down.

I’m excited! I figured it still wouldn’t be “max” with a G2 Reverb but it’s really tough to run it on settings that aren’t really, really low on a 1080Ti. I didn’t try to get into the nitty gritty of optimizing it, granted, but it didn’t seem like I could find the performance I wanted and still have the game be “pretty enough.” Suspect the 3080 will bridge that, though. Just have to hope Amazon doesn’t cancel the order or something. I’m still in disbelief that I managed to click through to buy it. Thanks, whoever recommended that Spacetech discord.

I have a 2080 Super and G2, and flying on Persian Gulf At War on Hoggit it is smooth 45fps with decent settings and flat shadows, with 1.0 SS. If PGAW runs well, single player is a breeze.

It provides a crisp and pretty view, and feels great.

MSFS2020 is a bit choppier with medium low settings but using 0.90 render scale helped a lot, and didn’t seem to hurt much at all.

I am still in the market for 3080 but nowhere to be seen. Ugh.

I just got a 3080 and had nice smooth(ish) VR for a few hours. Looks like updating the nvidia drivers was a mistake. VR is a real gamechanger. It really tricks your mind into thinking you're actually in the plane and it feels incredibly real.

Interacting with the instruments is kind of a hassle though. I need more buttons on my joystick.

This is what I used to get mine. I'm at my PC all day to WFH so I'm pretty attentive to the discord beep and just mashed through the buttons and it actually cleared. I didn't even believe it when it happened. Considering that post is only 11 days old, it didn't actually take me a ton of time to get one this way, but I'm sure there's still a large luck element to it. Hell, even the amazon stock today didn't let me add it to my cart initially. I was about to give up, but for some reason I tried again and the second time let me finish the order.

I am bummed that there's no VR hands and only the mouse in MSFS VR - it was sometimes weird but I really liked being able to use my VR hands in X-plane VR.

I just looked up my EVGA queue. You can get in a queue for any EVGA video card and cross referenced it with some reddit google docs where you can kind of get a vague idea where you're at. I am in a Queue for a 3070 card and have been in it since October 29th. Still haven't heard back from EVGA but I'm certainly in the rough time frame where I could in theory hear from them that I can order a card now...which gives you an idea of how backlogged they are.

Really looking forward to shared cockpit in MSFS2020 for cross country chill bro flying.

Flew two separate Da-20s out of Flagstaff on a 335 course yesterday with a friend until we got to Grand Canyon. In VR, flying towars the edge made it look like you were headed to the canyon, but it was really hard to see the feature it. The live weather also kind of pushed you down because the Katana doesn’t fly very high, and the flat area around the canyon is already pretty high up.

That mean cruising a bit higher than 500-700 feet AGL and when I finally lurched over the edge into Grand Canyon, I curses audibly as did my friend. It’s a phenomenal sight in VR, in an overwhelming way. Really drat cool.

Fallowing the VR settings guide on the official forums has my rig running incredibly smooth. I haven't gone anywhere with a lot of buildings yet but bush plane flying at tree top level in BC is 100% jitter free. The airfields in the BC Mega pack I picked up from flightsim.to are beautiful. Check it out if you like STOL flying.

Dude?
FYI Nvidia released new drivers today that fix the SteamVR stuttering issues and I felt a real improvement in overall smoothness in MSFS today when I tried it (quest 2 with link cable). Especially good for 30 series cards because for the 20 series you could just download old drivers to eliminate the stuttering but this is the first official release that gets rid of the problem on 30 series.

This is questionable. Do we have sale numbers? Who's to say they don't sell even more cards when there isn't a shortage holding them back? Even if they're now managing to sell 50/50 non-OC and OC when it's ordinarily 90/10 (numbers made up for the sake of argument), that hardly matters if they're only selling a small fraction of the numbers they normally sell due to shortages.

Yeah, I don't buy that. The scuttlebutt from nvidia is that they are super frustrated for not being able to effectively simply print more money.

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

yeah given that every single card made available sells out within seconds, I think "dohohoho artificial scarcity makes our product more desirable" loses out in this case to "we could make a shitload of money right now if everyone who wants a card could actually buy one." There's no point in sending demand through the roof if you can't make it up in supply.

Like I would be giving nVidia my 800 dollars today if I could but I can't so I'm not.

I want to maybe give some caveats to my previous excitement. While I think that Spacetech discord is still super helpful and it’s how I’ve gotten my 3080 from Amazon, I’ve still been chasing their notifications (I have a friend who would take a 3080 and doesn’t want to chase one) and I’ve been unable to get another one bought using the same method and being at least as fast as when I completed the transaction. I’ve tried with at least as many if not more drops.

I kind of assumed that if I got one that way that another would be easy, but dear god I think even still I basically hit the click lotto that one time.

I don’t mean to continue the card derail but I wanted to mention that it still sucks bad and I feel bad for making it sound easy. :/

Yeah it's still a crapshoot as to whether the thing you're looking for is even in stock yet. When I ordered my 5800X, I clicked the link, and it wouldn't let me add to cart. Then a few seconds later I was finally able to put it in my cart and order it. You just have to be ready at all times and act fast and hope you're lucky enough to be there when you're able to buy it.

Oh I'd imagine Nvidia would love to flood the market in cards. AMD has its own issues but they'd love the same. Here in AU it's largely on the retail end - 3060s, 3090s, even 3080s for people who would normally just go for a 3070. All marked way the hell up because it's still cheaper than getting a card from a scalper. It'll eventually go back to normal when the world stops being a shitstorm but the frenzy has led a lot of people to open their wallets way more than they usually would.

I guess here at least it's still a matter of being in a queue or randomly being fast. The lottery thing is hilarious.

Oh, that's what you meant. Still, no. I have to imagine revenue is way below what manufacturers were hoping for due to the shortages, even if people are being upsold on some cards due to availability. This is not a state of affairs anyone wants to continue.

Third mission, spot terrorist camp. Tell my flight to stay back, I want first crack at these guys. Do my strafing run, then tell them on comms to go ahead and start blasting.

No response. They all crashed into the mountains without firing a shot. I finish the job myself, fly home, their ghost voices haunting me as if this were a normal mission, and land. Mission complete.

Check the ED forums, apparently the AI can't handle mountains...
