Every wrestler needs a gimmick. John Cena's gimmick is that he's a grown man who loves wearing jean shorts.

Do it ironically posted:I’m fairly certain wwe matches are basically 100% scripted, I remember seeing leaked videos of the match runners making them run through the matches multiple times I was part of a wrestling match in Lucha Underground that involved a group of fans. We got to go backstage with the wrestlers and one of the agents before the show as they laid out the match. They set like one or two big spots, the finish, and the bits that involved the crowd, but there definitely was a place where they just said "then we'll wrestle for like five or six minutes" and both guys didn't need to discuss that part further. And they improv-ed a few spots that involved the crowd members that they definitely didn't talk about beforehand.

frankenfreak posted:That'll do that. Yeah, for those out of the loop, it can't be said enough how terrible modern WWE is. Basically, after WCW died, WWE went about fifteen years being mediocre and the closest thing they had to competition, TNA, was a clown show that couldn't stop making the worst decisions. Then Vince McMahon (who has final say on everything) just got older and more out of touch to the point that the company can't create new stars or write coherent stories. He will regularly tear up scripts an hour or so before a live show and come up with something new on his own, causing massive writer turnover because what's the point? But it doesn't matter because Fox, NBC and the Saudi government are willing to hand them crazy amounts of money. Even though the ratings are at record lows, the company knows that it doesn't have to even try because they're somehow making so much money anyway.

Fun fact: the median WWE viewer is 54 years old. https://deadspin.com/study-the-median-age-of-tv-wrestling-viewers-has-nearl-1795864450 The comparison to comic books is probably apt, since I've been regularly advised by anyone with an interest in such things that there was a point where the comic book companies could have taken risks to try and hook a new generation of fans, or they could ride a Boomer/GenX nostalgia cash cow into oblivion, and buh gawd they're riding it till the wheels fall off

My friends got me into watching wrestling around high school age as a sort of 'ironic' thing, that was just about the very beginning of the attitude era, and honestly, it was great for what it was. Growing up in a rural area and with too much time on our hands, of course we got into the whole backyard wrestling fad, and put on 'shows' that doubled as parties. We were huge dorks about it and made absolutely sure everyone knew how fake and corny it was, but we still busted each other up pretty good and did a lot of dangerous poo poo that I will never believe didn't hurt or possibly kill one of us. I personally have jumped off a farm silo onto someone, broken through tables, hit and been hit by folding chairs, been suplexed onto bare ground, and more. We even had teachers at our high school get in on cutting promos for us. There was a day after school was out that several of my friends and I were still in the hallway after pretty much everyone had cleared out (I think we were doing a project or something), and seeing one of our favorite teachers, my good friend told me to Irish whip him into an open locker door (full size) right as he was leaving his class room. He sold it absolutely perfectly, and the poor teacher, who knew both of us well, actually sprinted down the hallway because he legitimately thought I'd assaulted my friend. We both had to convince him we were just loving around, and I dunno if I've ever apologized to anyone faster in my life than trying to explain just what the hell we were doing. My gimmick for the backyard shows we put on was wearing a white leisure suit I found at goodwill and my 'finishing move' was 'The Disco Inferno' where I laid the person out and very, very fakely put them into the John Travolta 'Disco' stance as a submission hold. Good times :p Anyway that's some of my stupid wrestling stories.

It’s even crazier to think about when you have wrestlers going to other countries to wrestle. An American who doesn’t know a lick of Japanese going against a Japanese wrestler and they’re still able to work because wrestling is a universal language. It’s really cool.

Back when Batista was new and I was following wrestling only very loosely I wrote him off as some stereotypical Jersey Shore meathead and never gave it a second thought for years. I got a bit more curious when he started being in movies, and not just WWE-produced vehicle for a wrestler movies. Eventually read up on him and found his twitter and it's like... wall to wall unconditional BLM support, LGBTQ support, Bernie Sanders, and vocally speaking out against Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, that dreadful QAnon congresswoman, you name it.
