Silver being mostly wrong about a bunch of elections in a very loud way has made him feel empowered to be mostly wrong about a bunch of other things in a very loud way. This isn't the first time he's been called out for just throwing out opinions about things he has no expertise in, and I doubt it'll be the last.

Nate's not a statistician but he's not that bad at modeling. A lot of the criticism he gets is due to discrepancies between what the polls predict and what the actual election outcomes are, which isn't really something that anyone at 538 has any control over. The problem is that he's decided that getting some numbers right means that he's qualified to be a pundit, and boy howdy is he a godawful pundit. He's also said some pretty stupid things about covid and the vaccines. We'd all be happier if he'd just shut up and stick to things that he's done well at, but that's boring, and showing your rear end all over Twitter gets engagement, so here we are.
