I mean, worst comes to worst they'll just have to stop all the American teams from playing and award the Cup to one of the Canadian teams, which would make it the most asterisk Cup to ever exist.

To be fair, this is not the first time it’s happened with the Wild. A few years ago they passed around a nasty flu bug and a bunch of players were missing for a couple weeks.

It’s just worse than a nasty flu bug this time.

Mike Smith coming back to play for Edmonton fulfils the essential role of having one player on the team who is solely there to drive the Oilers analytics community insane with his useage. He's taken up the torch from Kris Russell, who received it Mark Letestu and Matt Hendricks, who got it from Andrew Ference before them.

Also does anyone remember Ilya Bryzgalov playing in Edmonton as their starting goalie? it's a thing that happened during the Dallas Eakins term!

god help the Oilers :negative:

As for Bryz, I definitely remember that, and the trade (Smid to Calgary) that was done in order to facilitate that signing. That whole season (13-14) was a crazy goalie carousel for the Oilers. Devan Dubnyk, Jason LaBarbera, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Fasth, Ben Scrivens, Richard Bachman.

I wonder what evidence the NHL would accept as "definitive"

You can't prove that those lineman didn't get COVID from somewhere else, and even if you can you're simply experiencing the world through your fallible senses, let the adults handle this one

Only if they include n95+ filtration otherwise it could arguably be worse in how it would trap covid particles in and around the nose/mouth area.

Edit: Part of the deal is the NHL allegedly has 'robust' contact tracing sooooooooo

The NHL still denies that getting repeat concussions throughout a career gives you brain damage, they’re never going to admit on-ice transmission

yeah but atleast Kris Russel is playing a more suitable 3rd pairing role than 25 minutes a night or whatever they were using him at for a few seasons there. I haven't heard much complaints about his individual play from Oilers fans lately, with the exception of people (rightly) remarking that they should be trying to integrate their young guys into the lineup on a consistent basis.

**to be fair, i think the complaint i've heard the most from Oilers fans this year is that Tippet is continuing to refuse to use the RNH - Draisaitl - Yamamoto line that was utterly dominant for the 2nd half of last season (to an extent that is basically unprecedented in the last 30 years of Oilers hockey) that he went away from in the play-in's for no clear reason and has never went back to.

We'll see if the Mike Smith narrative can over-take that.

Did the NHL actually state that on ice transmission wasn't a thing? I heard media guys saying that that but I couldn't believe it was actually a position of the league. I guess its not surprising from the same people who said that there was no evidence that fighting lead to concussions.

They kind of get into these tussles after the whistle where the officials have to break it up and the players and officials are all shouting at eachother while this is going on. If someone came up to you at work without a mask and screamed in your face you probably wouldn't feel too good about that from a safety perspective..

The NHL's stance on on-ice transmission was basically "we don't know for sure, so we're going to assume no".

This is a valid complaint and it's dumb that Tippett refuses to put them together, especially when the main reason for moving Nuge up to the 1st line was to create a pair with him and McDavid, but McDavid and Puljujarvi have established themselves as a formidable pair on the 1st line, which means Nuge could easily be switched with Kahun on the 2nd line to reunite that trio.
