Last house is absolutely beautiful. Honestly a lot of them are. I don't know what it is but there's something about straw bale & plaster construction that's just inherently appealing. The smooth organic look? I don't know. But that last one is dream material.

I can look at homes like that last straw bale house, and appreciate the great color choices, but for the life of me I can't look at things in isolation and recognize if they look good together. Home decor is hard yo.

Let's learn about interior design from The Craftsman! January 1915. linoleum is good y'all  don't paint that woodwork (unless it's a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom)! I 100% agree that the lighter stains of wood don't look as good on floors  colors are good  carpet is old news  bonus poem

Anyone have any recommendations on where to look for a side table for my couch? I tend toward postmodern kinds of deals. Was looking at Philippe Starck's Prince Aha, but the color choices right now aren't gonna fit what I am wanting. The room it is going in is going to be international Klein blue. Looking for under 20" tall.

I always think of it as being very "futuristic" looking. I think a lot of Pablo lighting falls into this category. That being said, I did look up the side table - very cool! Thanks for the Hive Modern suggestion. They have some good choices. I am looking at under $500. The couch is a futon that I drunkenly ordered last week but ended up being pretty happy with. Modernist suggestions are fine too. I see Hive Modern has white Kartell Componibili, which I hadn't found elsewhere except vintage used examples for $$$. Color-wise, bright. White, yellow. Was looking at Saarinen side tables, though that would stretch my budget a bit. (stock photo)

I tried to contribute to Youth Decay's thunder by using my home town, but hats off to you because it's a ton of work. If you want some Victorian goodness, Louisville, KY has some choice houses up, even with the market very hot right now. I spent my high school years in an original fire house complete with old fire hydrant. Amazing woodwork and original floors, but it was a pretty modest building. Many of them have been broken into multiple apartment units that house some of the poorest city residents, including uni students due to the proximity of the local state university there. Hive does tend to have a lot of stuff that isn't sold much in the US. That's where I ordered my little Magis table from. I actually noticed that Componibili table, that's pretty cute! My normal post modern suggestion is a laminate cube or drum or a parsons table of some kind, but I think those would look too heavy alongside that particular sofa. I’d say go for the componibili. In case you do think it would work, I’m really fond of these super bright yellow vintage one-piece plastic parsons tables made by Syroco that can be had for $100-200 if you’re up for a hunt.

Love those basements, especially the ones with bars. I would swap out the white drop ceiling panels with something else though. One has a brown rotary phone on the wall, I put the same one in my kitchen last summer. Note: I am in the midwest and grew up with that poo poo.

I'll second that - as a fellow Midwesterner, I'd be very comfortable hanging out in many of those basements. If there's a huge open finished room in the basement, and you enjoy some company (outside of Plague times), then a bigass basement saloon bar is the way to go.

Thirding the finished basement bar support. Think the best one I've seen in person was when someone's adult kid moved back for college and they didn't want him to have to pay for a dorm or apartment. Converted the machine room to host a full kitchen, set up a bar/living room in the main space, already had a full bath & bedroom. Walk-in basement so the only overlap of living spaces they needed were the driveway and laundry room. One of the only times I've seen "single family to multiple family" conversion work out well. Though the kitchen might have been a fire hazard.

Holy poo poo that library rules. Having a library like that in my house has long been one of my life goals. As for that sunken tub, why is it positioned so it has you staring right at the toilet when you’re relaxing in it? It’s like the opposite of the hidden coward toilet. Just imagine being in the tub relaxing and minding your own business when your SO comes in and plops down on the toilet and starts talking to you and/or pooping. PS: lots of those houses have excellent rugs and I would like to have them so I can put them in my house.
