Westworld is such a shame. An interesting premise, a really good cast, great cinematography, neat production design, a pretty sweet score...all failed by catastrophically bad writing.

You made the right choice.

If you want to watch a sci fi show that shares that season's themes of determinism and free will without any of the poorly written characters, plot and dialogue you can watch Devs.

I remember this really mournful piece in The AV Club about how Garden State ruined The Shins. Or, more specifically, they argued that the 2004 Shins should have wound down and been a well-remembered indie band of the past so that James Mercer could move on to something bigger and better. But because they got so much money and acclaim for being the guys who did the song Natalie Portman said would change your life, Mercer couldn't ever justify letting "The Shins" end and now they're a completely irrelevant band tied to a scene everyone mocks.

Lmao, [popular exposure] ruined [the obscure band] was such a 00's thing that you can even see these days people moan about unwashed hordes finding about their favorite indie bands because Netflix prints out TV series and need songs in bulk.

I confess that I heard "New Slang" on the Garden State trailer back then but wasn't able to like any other The Shins songs besides that and Australia.

I checked their YT page and boy the view numbers etc. are just sad ghost town vibes.

I heard like a nearly 18 year old song of Sufjan Stevens (Chicago) as an intro of a random Netflix series (The Politician) which might or might not get cancelled after it's second season. Also he won an Oscar (with a song I don't like at all) so good for him.

Are you sure about this? It seems like the rising tide of the Rock would have also lifted the WWE. Any events he comes back for are a big deal and now Vince can tell new hires "sure you don't have the legal rights of an employee and we work you to the bone, but if you play your cards right, you can be a movie star!"

Yeah it was a trope in the late 90’s and early 2000’s that was somewhat grounded in reality, but then it morphed into “man I’m not taking these anti-depression meds and living in your boxes made of ticky-tacky!”, before decaying into its final form of insane conspiracy theories.

All things considered, I wish I had been treated for depression and anxiety as a kid, and it wasn’t shoved under the rug by my parents who were against all forms of psych treatment. It would have probably avoided my life falling apart in college and almost killing myself.

I feel like it's not wrong to say WWE has decided that their wrestlers becoming super famous is actually a negative, by all accounts I've heard from the production side the big switch they've made was from trying to make their individual wrestlers into stars and pivoting into "the brand" being the star, with predictably disastrous results as they find themselves losing more and more of their audience each year. Right now WWE is doing stuff like taking 50% of the money their wrestlers are making streaming on Twitch because "we own your likeness" so if any WWE wrestlers want to do movies they can quickly find themselves in a position where their workplace is telling them "either you do our lovely WWE direct to video movies or else we're cutting you from the company".

I'm sure someone who frequents the wrestling forum can give more info, but apparently Vince doesn't think of it this way, and has even clamped down on letting WWE people stream, because if you're going to make any money at all it has to go through his hands first.

I'm sure that he does want them to become movie stars, but starring in WWE Studios movies and still reliant on the company for everything.

Vince is an absolute control freak who gets mad at himself (or anyone in his presence) for sneezing, and runs WWE like a literal cult. The money isn't even the reason why he doesn't want people making it big without his direct influence, it's because he's desperate to prove himself as a multimedia baron instead of the biggest carny in the carny business. His best friend is Donald Trump and that really tells you all you need to know about the man that owns WWE.

Word is the reason the reveal in season 2 was so stupid was because they wanted to make it so Reddit couldn't figure it out. Which of course is stupid in itself because some people are going to figure it out ahead of time if you're good about setting it up. I mean I figured out the "twist" in season 1 like a bunch of other people did. There was no way to figure out ahead of time what happened in season 2. Also they randomly made someone else a host to have another reveal.

LOST pretty much ruined an entire generation of TV huh.

Who cares if someone predicts the twist? That's usually a good sign, a sign that canny consumers can spot the hints the writers planted in the script, which is rewarding for them and the writers.

colonelwest
Jun 30, 2018

The problem with the “prestige TV” is that after the mid 2000’s everyone and their grandmother tried to copy the formula until it just became “TV”. But there’s nowhere near enough writing talent to churn out hundreds of shows at the Breaking Bad level of quality. You have sitcom-tier writers who in another era would be working on “Sister, Sister”, constantly trying and failing at making these big complex genre shows. So you get poo poo like Kurtzman Trek and the latter half of GoT.

Exactly. When I saw Sixth Sense I figured out the twist partway through because Mr. Night had done a good job framing scenes with Bruce Willis so they could be viewed either way. A great flick even though I figured it out and the twist still hit when it was revealed.
