Hyunjin from Stray Kids is on hiatus because of the bullying stuff. https://www.soompi.com/article/1456712wpp/jyp-entertainment-releases-statement-about-stray-kids-hyunjins-future-activities Fan twitter seems to have predictably turned into a death threat filled shithole as a result of this.

I assume it's a move to hurt Spotify's launch in Korea? It was done by Kakao and helps keep Bottom Liner fucked around with this message at 20:14 on Feb 28, 2021 |

Yeah, the distributor for all those also runs Melon, a huge streaming service in SK. Apparently the artists and labels themselves weren't made aware, seems to have taken a lot of people by surprise. This is going to really suck for artists who are huge globally, and also artists who've just had comebacks or will soon. I'm mostly thinking of CL, please drop anyway CL, I'll pay some dumb import price or something. My spotify playlist has been pretty well gutted. I hope it's a short term thing, I've got really used to my £10/month music budget and this is going to cause problems.

Sucks if they also pulled rights in other countries when they could just block them in Korea, I imagine? But maybe Kakao is just pulling a power move.

# ? Feb 28, 2021 23:18 |

Yeah and it’s extra lovely because it hurts the artists the most and annoys international fans. A few artists have started speaking up so hopefully at least the international rights get restored.

Spotify just launched in Korea this month. A lot of artists weren’t on there yet, but this lapse in licensing removed a lot more and made it international. Spotify released a statement saying they hope to restore it ASAP but I expect that will cost a lot given Kakao’s move.

Spotify is going to have a hard enough time competing with Melon and Genie as is, Kakao pulling this will make it even harder lol. Hopefully international rights get sorted soon for people who use it for their kpop. Though Spotify's selection has always been weird anyway, I personally don't use it. Like random songs off albums not being available b/c the minis they originally released on are not. TIL Sunmi's Warning EP just deadass does not have Gashina or Heroine, and the singles aren't available either lmao.

I'd say it tangibly hurts groups that have a large international fanbase like Dreamcatcher and Loona. They had 1.4 and 1.5 million monthly spotify listeners which gives them big discoverability on the platform, and that leads directly to bigger fanbase growth and sales. It would be like a company pulling a groups Youtube channel, it's a huge platform and even if the direct payments from streaming revenue is negligible, the larger effects are important. The kicker here is that the biggest groups like BTS and Blackpink are still on the platform which will only funnel more attention to them in the absence of the rest. This also made me realize how good music streaming has been up to this point compared to TV/movies. Most of the large platforms had most of the content you'd want but going forward I'm sure the various platforms and content will get fragmented just like Netflix/Hulu/every other service did with video. I imagine they would have to figure out some sort of agreement because not being on the biggest music streaming platform in the world is probably a good reason for agencies to start looking at distributors that aren't KakaoM. IU and the PlayM groups like Weeekly and Apink can't get away from KakaoM but I think most other groups probably could? I guess it depends how much KakaoM care about that distribution business Anyway this is a good opportunity for me to switch to Apple Music I guess and hopefully it doesn't all disappear from there next week

Youtube music is pretty great despite the app itself being meh. Biggest library by far and I can't imagine anything being taken off of Youtube. It also gets you youtube premium and you can upload your own stuff if that matters to you.

https://twitter.com/Jeff__Benjamin/status/1366273496494583817?s=20 Seems like some stuff will slowly come back so I guess I'll just give it two weeks and see where it's at. I could see some stuff staying missing though, probably not much reason to go back and find a new distributor for older groups like Kara. Same, this made me realize I’ve been able to use Spotify as my main source for music for the past 12 years Compare that to tv/movie streaming, where I have three active subscriptions on different platforms just to be able to see the movies/shows I want.

One silver lining to not having acts travel is being able to have more of them to perform and hopefully have longer setlists. The lineup feels like those huge Japan K-CONs with multiple dates/venues.

"Modern" kpop is a bit of blind spot for me, would any of the big playlists on spotify be fine start to check stuff out or is there something you folks would recommend that's a bit more curated?

I think that because of the ongoing dispute between KakaoM and Spotify, listening to any spotify playlist for current kpop may be difficult. Consider Tidal, Apple Music or Youtube Music instead at this time.

Rain's whole mini is quite lovely, tho Switch To Me and Why Don't We are probably the best tracks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-ZWRYForQI lmao this mv is definitely something I wish more of TRI.BE's performances would have a lower backtrack, most of the time you can hear at least half of them decently singing live, but the other girls have their mics hella low. I think their most recent perf for Arirang's Simply K-Pop had the best levels to actually hear their voices. Anyway they go the gently caress off for a brand new group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_pcYJA1_8Q Dance practice w/ live singing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39ZTNoojaQ8 Regular rear end dance practice, but whew lad their synchronicity is like loving Into The New World tier on this choreo, even their hair flips are in sync. So, a little something that warms my cold black heart after a month of terrible drama in K-pop-land: Perpetual nugu Brave Girls' 2017 criminally underappreciated bop Rollin' went viral as all hell in Korea over the last week, thanks to a great video edit of some of their performances for the Korean military. Viral to the point where the song has hit #1 on Genie and Bugs, and into the 24-hour top 10 on Melon. Viral to the point where they're going to do promotions for it again, 4 years after it released, and actually have a decent shot at a win.
