hobbesmaster posted:$160k is 84th percentile household income. That seems like a lot of people to be pissing off. Yeah, but it's really the difference between 200k and 160k household income that you're pissing off. Still a lot, but not 16%. Looks like 6-7% of households got the last check and didn't get this one. wins32767 fucked around with this message at 00:16 on Mar 11, 2021 |

There's retroactive trumpbux in the name of the Recovery Rebate Credit, which I didn't know about. Also, gently caress the man for making all this poo poo confusing and stupid.

What narrative does the GOP have? They've been moaning about Dr. Seuss and Lola Bunny for fucks sake. They don't even have token policies to offer up in contrast to the Democrat's, all they have is the Culture War.

So what's the basis for thinking Biden's stimulus won't change anything? I have a hard time believing it won't have any impact at all on the way American's view social welfare programs, especially with the huge amount of families that are going to be getting money every month for each of their children. Literally not a single Republican voted for it which I think is going to be difficult to fend off come 2022. I just don't find the doomposting to be particularly compelling in this case.

I may not agree with the approach but I agree with n4i that the Democrats are worthless and people should stop being thankful or cheering for incremental change when the incremental change only comes after we take ten steps backwards. Don’t cheer for people like they did a good job when they are doing less than what should be the bare minimum.

You’re asking a party that has shown to be politically impotent for the last decade to ride the high of getting a bill passed during a pandemic all the way to election season. A problematic reason to cheer for a bill to begin with (that they’ll use it as a party platform in 2022).

I mean running on increasing the minimum wage and $2000 checks for everyone immediately and then delivering neither of those while pointing to "$1.9t in aid tho" is probably going to bother people and going to be a super easy thing to put in a 30 second campaign spot in a year and a half.

Mustang posted:Oh yeah, why? Because your entire argument is predicated on "GOP gonna have to defend this choice" as though that's actually something they're going to have to do. Their base isn't going to care and is absolutely going to believe them when they say "democrats did a socialism and socialism bad." In the midst of a global pandemic that the GOP actively made worse they only just barely lost in 2020. People didn't elect Biden because he's worth a poo poo. They elected Biden because he wasn't Trump and that's not going to cut it in 2022.

We're at a point with the GOP where it's better to let them die off and flood the D party with every rear end in a top hat under 40, because that's who it's going to effect most. Even then, you're not convincing Jesus and 2A single issue voters regardless of age. There's always going to be regressive shitheels in their 20s because they don't want to maybe possibly (most likely never) have to register their guns or face an actual muslim majority influx, or god forbid tax the rich because they're all gonna hit the powerball one day so gently caress your taxes. Mustang posted:Ok, sure. So you think this bill have absolutely no impact on anything whatsoever? Why? This bill signals to to the broke-brained right that the Democrats are going to force their own socialist policies through and they need to vote red to stop it. It signals to progressives that the Democrats are going to compromise on their promises for no reason (e.g. cuts to unemployment benefits and they still got 0 Republican votes) and are not to be trusted, driving down turnout on election day. This is an argument completely divorced from the fact that there were good things in the bill.

This general stance makes sense, but then people will never celebrate anything, ever. A central tenet of community organizing is that when you organize for change, and are successful at getting that change, you throw a party and celebrate. Whether it's the passing of a new ordinance, or a community upgrade to a park, or whatever - there's a celebration after. Then, right after the party, you start badgering the gently caress out of powerful people to get the next thing. There was a shitload of fighting to get what we got, even though there didn't need to be. My position is that right now, for a little while, it's party time.

We deserve better and shouldn’t say a positive word about less. You can take what they give you and still be unhappy and demand more.

The American Recovery Act 2009 was a 830b[1t today] stimulus package passed in January 09 and the ACA was signed March 2010. The democrats got murdered in the house losing 60 seats by November 2010, and would get thrown out of the senate during the next round of elections.
