They all explicitly mentioned it to some degree, no surprises. I've also been avoiding the stuff like "front end engineer with 5+ years experience in these technologies"

Outside of the handful of roles that are a better fit for my experience I've just been shotgun applying to stuff and I fully expect most of them to never respond back, but why go through all the effort of scheduling a call with the engineer as if there was going to be a real interview? There's a non-zero amount of effort in preparing and anticipating for that. The rejection could have been an email. I didn't need a dressing down from some nerds. The fact that it happened twice within 3 days is what cheesed me off too.

it's probably the recruiters who don't know wtf they're doing scheduling the call and i can guarantee you that nine times out of ten the engineer interviewing you is looking at your resume for the first time the moment the call starts

that's just how it is

yeah I mean I have been working in finance IT for 10+ years and it has its good points, such as:

* turning up hungover being generally ok

* swear as much as you like nobody gives a poo poo

* every department hates every other department so you get a high level of team cohesion (but good luck getting those fuckers in Ops to do anything for you)

* there are a lot of idiots and nothing ever gets fixed so you can look really good just by being able to do basic poo poo like query a database

* pay is generally good (results may vary)

this all tracks, especially the part about those fuckers in ops. find a boss who can give you enough air cover to work on professional development and it’s a good gig.

it's easy to be a superstar in finance by simply meeting your goals and commitments because 90% of people can't manage that

if you think something's going to take 2 weeks you give yourself 3 weeks and deliver on the exact day you said even if you were done last friday, you'll get your full bonus every year

oh yeah they also pay actual bonuses, usually in the 2-4 paycheck range

my boss is good but he's as screwed by our nonsense hiring policies as everyone else so a lot of the time his answer is "lol what did you think I can do about it?"

this is bang on. Every finance project is a shambles because there are generally two or three PMs to every developer involved, and people confuse "volume of project artefacts" with "tangible progress" but it means that you can say whatever you want as an estimate and it will generally get accepted because nobody actually has any idea about the solution

I've been doing this for years and only very, very, rarely does someone call me on it.

qirex
Feb 15, 2001

it's also ok to miss estimates but only if you give enough warning, like if you're 6 weeks into a 12 week project and you say you're going to need 3 more weeks that's chill but if you're 11 weeks in and say you need 2 more you'll look bad

communicate bad news as early as possible, half the time they won't even see the email about it or forget it was you

jfc interviewing sucks so much. after several months of suffering though an offer finally came in and it's for +20% in salary alone. i was weak and named a number that was well above what i'm making now and which i consider to be quite good, and they just went "sure" and offered that number which is a sure sign i am an idiot for naming the number. i'm v bad at negotiating about money because i just don't care that much. still, i'm happy with some v deece figgies for the area. there's also stock options that are hypothetically worth another 10-15% or so but the company is not publicly traded so in practice they're worth jack poo poo. job is still webshit but at least it's a legitimately good product. :yotj:

hell yeah congrats on the big raise. don't get too down on yourself for not negotiating well, it's hard to be good at something you rarely do. 20% is nothing to sneeze at and now you will be better prepared when you eventually leave the new place.

why limit yourself to the budget?

in all seriousness, I once hosed up and named a number, and then they gave me more than I asked for, so if you'd have been happy with the money without negotiating, you're doing great.

imo this report yesterday is recommended reading for anyone who is approached to work for Apple, or who interviews someone with recent Apple experience.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/11/apple-lawsuit-shows-the-companys-extreme-focus-on-secrecy.html

Apple's software project secrecy is on a level that I would describe as extreme, and that other profitable companies manage to do without. As I've mentioned before, I worked about 3 months for them last year through an agency and at no point found out what project, or what kind of project I was working on, except that it was connected with a particular corporate acquisition. Then Apple dumped the agency I was in without any explanation of that either. Although I probably could have gone back into the same project through another agency, I did not, because the project used an obscure tech stack other than the one that the recruiter had represented, and because I was ticked off by the secrecy. I'm now employed again, despite the difficulty that comes with being literally unable to tell companies what I worked on in my previous job and possibly being presumed a liar. Did not try again, would not recommend.

Hey, I'm interviewing internally to move jobs from maintaining semiconductor test equipment to writing the programs that run on said test equipment. I have no electrical engineering knowledge, which isn't a big deal, but I dabbled in python that I self-taught to automate the annoying parts of my job. The hiring manager told me that in the interview they might ask me to some pseudocode questions, which I've never done before.

I've been open about not being much of a computer-toucher but I still want to look good. I was thinking of spending some prep time finishing up a script I have for work as a refresher and making it look... presentable (methods! a config file! wow). Is that going to be enough or should I try out some of those interview questions online?
