Well historically they really were, modern reputation as zipgun copycats aside. Kipling might have shat on "ten rupee Jezails" but they were good rifles, primitive reloading mechanism aside.

Pretty good interview from Herb Maté where he interviews a former us ambassador to syria. Does get a bit contentious, but they both handle it well for the most part. Good to see an interviewer ask questions and subject be knowledgeable of the interviewers views and push back.
