i hate having to be the one to bring this up every time we talk about starship troopers because i still love what verhoven did with it so i'll just keep it short and say heinlein is known for being massively, massively progressive for his era, especially considering when he was born and where he was born, because he attempted to create worlds bereft of racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry - his vision of a future utopia where we humans all come together was one of the biggest influences on gene roddenberry, for e.g., to such an extent that there are several references to heinlein's books nested throughout star trek's lore, and as heinlein got older some of his works even dealt with stuff like homophobia because he lived through the sexual revolution of the 60s and he was seemingly on board with it it's often been said that before heinlein science fiction only dealt with protagonists of two colours, either white for space faring europeans or green for extraterrestrial martians, and you can see this all over starship troopers too where john rico was originally juan rico, a filipino man, zim was a black man, the one world government president was black person, one of the characters nph's character was based on was asian, there are numerous latinx soldiers and pilots and there are also several strong military roles for women... the movie, which was made like 50 years after the book, was extremely timid and whitewashed by comparison, remembering that heinlein endured a lot of flak in his time for publishing the sorts of ideas he did considering how bigoted the average sci fi nerd is heinlein's biggest fault, however, was that he thought the military was literally the greatest thing ever and that he foresaw the origins of these future utopias as coming from everyone inheriting a strong sense of civic duty, and that it would be the wisdom of duty-bound military men and women which would guide us into a bright future - gene roddenberry hated that part so he tried to envision a utopia of scientists, explorers and diplomats but even he ended up using military ranks, making a profound sense of duty integral to starfleet, and he gave his characters disciplined, regimented lives, etc you can hate heinlein all you want for wanting to give the military industrial complex the sloppiest blow job imaginable through his fiction - i definitely think he's an idiot here - and you could argue it's detestable that he imagined people of all races and creeds coming together and doing the same like it's the brightest future there is for us, but you can also create completely off-base criticisms about heinlein's works if you got no context and i think that's a big reason why there's all these nerds out there running in to defend starship troopers sometimes vvvv : josh'd again

Stranger in a Strange Land is the most masturbatory piece of fiction that I can hear Heinlein violently cranking his hog echoing from the pages. I think the lawyer/author guy was the self-insert (or feels like one) as well. 11/10 would never read again Starship Troopers is and will be a good moopie tho, the RLM review is also one of the good ones.
