The index finger on my drawing hand is sort of hosed. I hurt it moving while carrying heavy stuff and then drawing and tattooing puts so much strain on the ligaments that something is seriously wrong. Obviously I need to get a professional medical person to look at it, but I also need to keep drawing.
Does anyone know if some sort of finger brace exists, like a knee brace you can get in a drug store but not one that is massive and bulky? There are gloves that can be worn to stop your hand smearing stuff or for tablet use, but they connect to the last two digits. I've taken to wrapping it up with self-adhesive bandages in the meantime.

Also, I went looking for a gadgets thread of its own (is there one?), felt slightly inspired to create one, and then remembered that I'm too lazy, but here is another question:

Are there drawing accessories that any of you use that you find invaluable?
For example, I have my apple pencil shoved into a massive disposable tattoo grip so the thing I'm holding is more than an inch wide, and I hear very good things about those screen covers that provide a bit of drag resistance. And off the top of my head, a simple 6H for starting a sketch with since I have a habit of pushing down too hard.

A knitter's/crafter's compression glove may do what you're looking for, but if you're at the point of describing it as "seriously wrong", you need to get someone to look at it asap especially if this is connected to your livelihood.

Ligaments and tendons can definitely be injured further from overuse or use when they're already inflamed. At the very least, please refrain from doing anything that causes pain as much as you can, and ice (through a towel or cloth, never directly on the skin) for up to 15-20 min at a time. If you're already taking NSAIDs for this, needing them for more than a week is a sign something is injured.

I'm doing a fairly large translation project and I used a PDF to Word app to edit the original text itself. The problem is, certain bits of text are slotted into boxes like in the picture, and since words tend to be longer in my native language, this is causing some issues. Is there any way to unfuck it?

In terms of getting better at drawing/painting I'm not sure where my time is best spent.

I do a lot of painting (Photoshop, computer) from reference every day for about 2hrs. I also dabble with hand drawing with pencil / ink / watercolour. I don't often draw from imagination.

I know I'm not good at anatomy or drawing likenesses in the face. Is doing a lot of life drawing going to be the best bang for the buck or am I just being impatient and should stick to my practice every day?

Anyone here heard of a group called writerscreeningandtraining@groups.io? They've got a job offer that seems kind of good, but on the surface of it it's not too good to be true: writing 6500 words/day OR editing 50k words for $1200, working from home. That said, they do have some red flags, like asking me to pick 3 expensive ($250+) products on Amazon and writing short blurbs on them as if I'm giving them as a gift (e.g. what kind of person would like this gift, what makes it better than others of its type, negatives etc.)- seems to me like I'd be writing their ad copy for them, especially since they've also asked me to use tools like https://1text.com to check for plagiarism, and https://hemingwayapp.com/ to keep things at a 6th grade reading level, maybe to shill expensive products to non-English speakers. Sound too good to be true to you guys?

No, no, that was my thought too. Oh well, all that glitters and all that.

EDIT: I honestly don't mind being paid to make those up- the fact these gifts are supposed to be $250+ means that odds are either they're for rich idiots with too much to spend, or someone's already set their sights on the goods and a bunch of astroturfed reviews aren't going to change their minds one way or the other. I just want to be paid fairly for my time, and a scammer's probably not gonna do that.

Oil painting -

I'm new to painting, weak like baby. How come when Bob ross puts oil paint into a canvas then goes softly back and forth with a soft brush it blurs and softens where mine just turns it into a smear? I'm being soft (though it looks like he's actually pretty rough), with a clean brush (no spirits).

I don't know if he ever talks about it on the show, but his canvas is covered in a wet layer of (white?) paint, so what you're seeing is the applied paint getting mixed in with that base layer. If you're working on a dry canvas it's not going to blend like that.

Hey, I'm trying to remember the name of an artist. They would go out into nature and make really beautiful assemblage type pieces out of just stuff they found. Like, arranging broken rocks into exquisite patterns, ornate mandalas out of feathers, using autumn leaves to make a spectacular swath of gradient color. I learned about them on the internet about, crap, maybe 10 years ago? and they had a coffee table book printed of their work iirc.

Sorry if that's vague as hell, but maybe someone here will know who/what I'm talking about. I've been doing some earthwork-type pieces myself and really want to see his (?) work again.

I'm just venturing into the subforum, and about to ask some real dumb questions.

Are there just general "conversation" threads? I make art type stuff, but don't always see where it fits. Many of the threads seem to have specific purposes, or goals. I just want to share what I make with peeps who might like to see it. Is etiquette to make your own thread? Do we have a just general place to post whatever? I read the rules and don't expect a hug fest or anything- I'm just new and don't want to poo poo up threads.

(Not sure if it matters, most of my stuff is pen/ink/calligraphy and the like, but with other attempts at stuff)

Hi! Yeah, etiquette is fairly loose just don't be an idiot and you'll be fine.

This is a relatively low traffic forum where most people stay in their large threads (like thunderdome, daily drawing, etc) so there's a risk if you make a thread it won't get much attention. However! Do it anyway, could be there are a bunch of people who are keen to see your poo poo and share their own!

Alternatively, the daily drawing thread is active and a great place to post your stuff, the artdome thread has a bunch of good things, the chat thread won't mind whatever you want to do to it and I think there are a couple of other art threads that might suit.

If you've got something you're particularly proud of head over to the travelling circus in PYF and post it there, our PYF friends are being super slack and need a bit of an example set for them.

Honestly I'd be approaching this from the angle of whether I'd want a friend who is the type of person to do that. Assuming they're taking someone else's work and saying in some way that they did it. If they're just copying other people's work to some extent I think that's how you learn (how many people plagiarize Bob Ross?).

I'd say just straight up confront them about it/call it out as plagiarism. As mentioned earlier, context is important I'd they're just hand referencing preexisting media that's probably ok, but if they're straight up stealing that's bad. It really depends on whether they're trying to pass the work off as their own and profit off of it. Monetary and social profit are somewhat different, but still straight up stealing work and claiming it as your own is reprehensible.

Bring it up regardless though. Express the importance of them needing to create their OWN work if they want to succeed. Copying preexisting work is useful as a learning aid, but being able to move past that and create and build your own idea is super important in the long term.

Double post:

I'm tired of working my soul sucking and just deflating service industry job. The money's good, but I'm mentally and physically grinding myself down and know that I'm nearing the end of my usefulness/ability to continue doing menial service labor. I want to quit and pursue my art as a living/career in what I guess is a freelance capacity as I don't have a digital art skillset to speak of.

I feel flummoxed and befuddled. People love my art and ate interested in it. I struggle with being as productive as I should be and a perceived lack of audience/client base I suppose. How do I build these things? I've sold prints and shirts via Instagram and here on the forums and while it was great I recognize that the scope is still small and not profitable enough on it's own. How do I build a business with my art? I've looked into easy and redbubble-ish solutions and it seems difficult to stand out and make money. I've seen prices that seem absurdly low in my opinion for prints

I know my biggest hurdle is my production level at this point and that's what I need to address first, but where do I go from there? Social media promotion seems like a logical step, but it seems scary and potentially wasteful. Anyone with any insight please chime in and give me some insight.

With the absolutely massive caveat that my experience is in indie game development, not indie art production:

  • Don't make this plunge unless you can afford to fail. You're starting up a new small business, and something like 90+% of small businesses turn out to not be financially viable. Make sure you understand what your fallback plan is, and make sure that fallback plan is one that you (and your family, if appropriate) are OK with. Do not not have a fallback plan, even if it's "I go live with my parents for the next five years".
  • You're turning a hobby into a job. Recognize that this is also a risky proposition, psychologically speaking. Some people find that being obligated to perform the hobby sucks all the joy out of it. Other people find they still enjoy it, but they then go way too hard in on it, wreck their work/life balance, and burn out. In order to succeed, you need to be sustainable, and that means working a sane amount of hours, and having things to do outside of your art, that will help you relax when you're not working.
  • Turning your art into a job means getting really practical about it. You probably can't afford to make art that doesn't sell, so figure out which market you're pursuing and really laser-focus in on it. Find a niche and exploit it. Speaking of point #1, porn is a lot more reliable than other art types when it comes to making a living. However, in relation to point #2, you also need this niche to be something that you're psychologically able to handle working in. There might be a market for, I dunno, graphic depictions of death or something, but I know I for one wouldn't be able to handle that kind of work.
  • There are a lot of artists out there, which means a lot of competition. Your biggest hurdle is simply getting your art in front of other people. That means you need to get comfortable with self-promotion. You'll need to have a presence on pretty much every social media network. Figure out how the networks work, and remember that they are networks -- you'll get more of a response if you engage with them than if you just use them as hands-off platforms to shout into the void. This is work, and it's work a lot of people don't really enjoy, but nobody's going to buy your art if they don't know who you are.
  • Seriously consider if there are other options available to you between working a lovely service job and going full-time indie. Can you find a job in marketing or graphic design? There must be a list of "jobs that leverage artistic skills" out there that someone with more artistic experience would know about. Such a job would almost certainly pay better than the service industry, and hopefully be more satisfying as well.

EDIT: actually, let's expand on that last one a bit. Know what your alternatives are, and the prones and cons of each. Like, one alternative is that you stick with your lovely service job. The pro here is that it's reliable income, the con is that you hate it and it's gradually burning up your will to live. Another alternative is that you go full-time indie. A third is that you try to break into a different career. These all carry different potential for risks and benefits. This is a good time to really think carefully about what you actually want out of your life. You don't want to spend a huge amount of time and effort trying to accomplish Goal X, then realize at the end of it that you would have rather been shooting for Goal Y instead.
