My own space that is separate from everyone else that someone has to physically enter in order to talk to me? How is that not better than an open office where everyone is just around me all the time and I have zero privacy or breathing room?

It's even worse for people who have been able to WFH with zero impact on productivity/output who are going to be forced to go back because part of our civic religion is that people should suffer

Yeah, before covid I was in an open floor office with six people, and even with those few it could be plenty annoying. Even just one person being in a voice/video call is enough of a distraction to slow everything down. Conversely, you're subtly discouraged from properly coworking, cause two people talking (even quietly) is similarly distracting for everyone else. And yeah, with always being in sight of everyone you can't even really take a breather for five minutes. Sure, every now and then a workshop with everybody physically present and working together can be very helpful, but for individual routine work it's poison.

It's funny that study after study shows that open offices hurt productivity but never actually say the real reason they're popular: bosses like to stare out of their doorway and see what everyone is doing because they're insane and don't have any actual work to do.

That and cram more people into smaller places and to make sure they know they're beneath management. See also 90% of paperwork and reports. Make work to make sure the workers are working (no one cares about actual productivity as long as the illusion is there). Here's a pic! Enjoy the free cafeteria food (that we will deduct from your pay!)

Yeah one of the most important things to remember about humanity at all times is that we don't act based on some objective shared reality, we act based on our individual perceptions. Bosses perceive their employees as working harder when they can be micromanaged and monitored at all times, so they reject the studies that say open offices reduce productivity because to their subjective perception they're increasing productivity by being able to hover over all their employees' shoulders at once.

Isn't one of the primary reasons for open offices that they save employers rent money, since they can cram more people in the same amount of space? Seems pretty typical of corporate short-sightedness to care more about that than the productivity of their employees.

I imagine another part of it is that it allows management to watch what everyone is doing, since you aren't hidden by a cubicle. Edit: lol, I missed that multiple people already said this

There are definitely good reasons beyond “being hosed with by corporate” for returning to the office. Sure, a lot of sectors *supposedly* didn’t lose “productivity” in the short term but getting people together physically somehow being treated as a frivolity is kinda silly.

|
# ? Mar 24, 2021 18:02 |

I'm afraid that I cannot work harder, because I do not want to. If you want to incentivize me to work harder, pay more money for more effort or let me work fewer hours for putting in more effort. I'm not staying late tonight so that my company can make more money while all that happens to me is losing a little more of my soul.

The, uh, funny part is that we know how to accomplish it already: if you pay people good, living wages and treat them like humans they will work harder and care about the job/company/team/whatever. But corporations are terminally myopic so instead they'll go with the cool mini ping-pong table in the break room that only costs like $300. Oh, and they're not bringing pack the pension contributions they "temporarily suspended" because "in these uncertain times" and you now have a dental deductable of 5k. Work harder!
