what's up Nintendo 64 kids

Star Fox 64 is better than any PlayStation game change my mind

I played that fuckin game over and over again as a kid. It's like 30 minutes long (this is the ideal length of a video game I've decided), but it's infinitely replayable even without the lovely multiplayer mode I would plug in four controllers to play by myself.

Are you a dumb baby? Well you can let Slippy get captured, and then fight Star Wolf in Boise, Idaho, where they say "Daddy screamed REAL good before he died" which is a weird thing to say in a children's game about talking space animals. Then you can fight a robot and roll credits, you dumb baby.

Are you a real gamer? Then you can save Falco in the first level and go to the water level. The water level is really hard, but if you beat it a pink cat will flirt with you on the dumpster planet. You might learn something about yourself here.

Caiman here! No problems. Because it's time for the best song in the game

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dIETrKo0Ao

before you go fight a beat-up looking Star Wolf and a big brain.

Nintendo please just put Star Fox 64 on the Switch. I don't have a 3DS and it's not as comfortable as my Lite anyway. I will pay you...30 of Joe Biden's dollars for a blurry 480i port of Star Fox 64 on the Switch. Please Nintendo. Plea

When the mini PS1 came out with 20 games everybody agreed that all 20 were absolute bangers but there was a lot of talk about all the great PS1 games that didn't make the cut.

If they did a mini N64 with 20 games I don't think anybody would be talking about the great N64 games that didn't make the cut. I don't think they could even come up with an assortment of 20 N64 games that would be widely regarded as all bangers.

Yeah that thing was regularly discounted down to like $20 until the stock ran out, there was no demand for it because of the poor library.

I actually prefer getting systems after they're "dead". They're cheaper, safer to mod and the games are cheap or free.

That makes me wonder, can't the Vita stream PS3/4 games?

So looking at my bingo card, I'm probably not going to end up filling in every square. At the very least though, I feel like making a tier list, so here's a tier list of every playable character from Yakuza 7.

  1. Ichiban - One of the best characters in the game, and that's a good thing given that you can't ever take him out of your party. Ichiban's strength lies entirely in his unique class Hero: it's the class of a classic Dragon Quest hero, coming in with good physicals, buffs, and healing. He gets some strong blunt damage AoEs, an AoE full heal, an AoE attack buff, and a buff that will save him from a fatal blow. Ichiban can do it all, and he's good at everything he does, which earns him a spot at the top. Really the only problem is the relatively weak attacks from hero, but that's not a problem at all; due to how the skill system works, Ichiban can grab strong attacks from every element except for gun.

  2. Nanba - Nanba's up here for a very similar reason to Ichiban, and that's because he can do it all. He's the male mage of the game, and mages do have a bit of a weakness in that all the generic mage classes tend to suck. Nanba, however, can lean on his unique class Homeless Guy pretty heavily. It comes equipped with powerful single target and AoE magic, in both blunt and fire varieties. On top of that, it's got probably the best debuff in the game: an AoE attack and defense down. In addition to all the great Homeless Guy stuff, Nanba's got access to his excellent character skills. They're all single target heals, but that's something that's not easily obtainable unless you're in a healing class, so it's nice that Nanba literally always has access to them. His healing falls off a little bit in the late game, but that literally only matters if you're trying for the final bonus dungeon. Overall Nanba is a great magic attacker with some versatility; you can't ask him to deal blade or gun damage, but with cross class skills he can hit pretty hard with blunt, fire, ice, and lightning.

  3. Joon-gi Han - You may have noticed I keep bringing up how many elements a character can hit. This is a very important part of Yakuza 7's combat, and your best attack at any one moment is usually your enemy's weakness, or a really, really strong neutral attack. Joon-gi Han's up here because he doesn't quite have the versatility of Ichiban and Nanba, but he sure does have the elemental coverage. Joon-gi is the only character who can naturally hit every single element; all the other men don't have access to gun, and the ladies can't get any lightning. Joon-gi, on the other hand, joins your party with access to blunt, blade, gun, and lightning, and it's not too difficult to give him a fire and ice move on top of that. And the best part is, all these moves are character skills or cross-class skills, meaning he doesn't have to stay in his default job and can take them anywhere! Granted, hitman is still an amazing job and it's what I kept him in, but you can move him to any job really and he keeps what makes him great. On top of all this, he's also got easy access to poison on a character skill. Poison, as a status effect, can hit basically any enemy in the game and never goes away. It's in your best interest to poison basically every job. And maybe the best part about Joon-gi? He's fast as hell. And yes, this is a game where going fast means you straight up get more turns than anyone else. At max level, in hitman, Joon-gi essentially gets double the amount of turns of anybody else in the game. He's frankly, amazing.

  4. Eri - I'm sad to say nobody else quite hits the highs of the top 3, but Eri is definitely putting in a good faith effort. She's not quite as fast as Joon-gi, but she's easily your fastest party member when you first pick her up. This also combos extremely well with her default job Clerk, because it gets a ranged AoE with a huge range very early on. Eri effectively becomes your "End Encounter" button for a long time; she acts first and immediately kills every enemy with a ridiculous AoE. Despite this, I feel like Clerk isn't her best job so much as dealer. Dealer comes equipped with a variety of casino and games themed moves, but the best is Darts Airstrike. It's a gun attack that fires off 3 darts to hit random enemies. As an AoE it's not so great, but it deals phenomenal single target damage because one enemy will be getting hit with all 3 darts. With this, she'll be your strongest character for a while. So why do I have her down here in 4th, you might ask? Well frankly, that's kind of all she gets. In my opinion the ladies get the short end of the stick on cross-class skills, and plenty of them just aren't nearly as good as what the men get. In lieu of an amazing AoE lightning attack for the guys, the women have an okay single target gun attack. And their cross-class ice spell just seems to be straight up weaker than the one the men get. The end result is that Eri's kind of a one-trick pony. She's fast yes, and deals amazing damage with darts, but if you want her to hit anything but gun damage or do any variety of healing, you're out of luck. Though I will say, having at least one of the girls is useful because they get an excellent AoE status cleanse from the Matriarch class, and it's absolutely saved my bacon more than once.

  5. Saeko - So I mentioned before that generic mage classes suck. This is a huge problem for Saeko, the female mage of the group. Her stats are geared for magic, but her default class for some baffling reason is almost exclusively slashing and blunt damage. It comes with a single fire spell, that isn't even cross-class. So, alright, you switch to Hostess, her only other option for mage class. This also isn't great. It comes with a line of single target ice spells, which is useful, and it's final spell is fire damage. It's alright, but it really doesn't come close to matching Nanba's Homeless Guy. Plus, as a result of male vs female cross class, the only spells she's going to get access to are Fire or Ice: if you want her to be using any other element, it'll be physical. She would just be a pretty disappointing character, but she's got exactly one saving grace and that's the Idol class. Saeko's got good healing, and the Idol is all about healing your friends. It comes with a couple of single target/AoE heals, one of which is an AoE full heal, a resurrection spell that full heals, and an AoE defense down that can charm. All in all it's a pretty good class, but the biggest problem is that you don't really need it for 95% of the game. Most of the time, the healing you get off of Ichiban and Nanba is more than enough and you'd rather have another damage dealer. That being said, having an Idol is drat near essential for the final bonus dungeon, so if you're planning on doing that it's not a bad idea to grind Saeko up in Idol. Otherwise though, I'm fine leaving her on the bench.

  6. Zhao - Zhao's not really a bad character. His default class Gangster has some pretty decent blunt and slashing attacks that can inflict status effects, as do his character skills. But that's kind of the problem really, it's all fine. None of his stuff does particularly a lot of damage, and it's in two of the most common damage types. Pretty much everyone above him has something remarkable that only they can do, even if Saeko's just barely squeezing by on Idol. Zhao is really just another damage dealer, and we've got more than enough of those.

  7. Adachi - Adachi is also fine. He feels a bit more like a failed character than Zhao because his main gimmick...really doesn't work. Adachi is supposed to be the tank of the party, and to that end he's got taunting skills in his default job Detective. This is pretty great and I'd probably jump him up the rankings if not for the fact that taunt sucks. It doesn't have a reliable hit rate on enemies, and hitting a taunted enemy has a chance to knock him out of it. Outside of the taunting, he really doesn't have anything going for him in detective, so he's better off moving to one of the generics. His character skills, at the very least, are pretty decent. They're all AoE blunt moves, which can be pretty handy. I really just wouldn't put him in the party over like...anyone else.

The one thing I'd like to stress though, is that really this is a game where anybody's usable. Even Zhao and Adachi get access to some really good skills through cross-classing, so you can just throw them in a decent generic class like Enforcer and they'll tear poo poo up all the same. The top tier characters just really have that extra leg up on the competition, I feel.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

I had a weird experience where Zhao was doing better damage than Joon-gi Han in the endgame in their default jobs, even with equivalently-upgraded weapons. Zhao was just clearing battles like crazy with the ladder spin Essence move and doing just as much single-target damage to bosses as Joon-gi. Almost felt like I was doing something wrong.
