also, the hololive CN group had such great designs, particularly Rosalyn. Too bad all that stuff happened that canned the whole group.

Are there any CN vtubers on twitch or youtube? Probably taiwan streamers, I guess...

Huh. That's strange. I guess my tendency to play on speed 5 has hurt me here.

Also, I guess I should probably officially make it clear that that was an April Fools Day episode, and the next update will be back to Kaiserreich. Some notes:

1) I'm kinda still waiting to see if the Hololive mod will get another update to see whether we'll do it again or not. There's some broken stuff and such that makes it a bit annoying.
2) If we do do that, I will be dropping the VTuber gimmick for two simple reasons: The VTuber software eats up a non-negligible amount of resources on my system and thus slows down HoI4, which is annoying (and you'll note I've already cranked down the settings quite a bit on it), and doing Ibble's side of things with Walfie's Fubuki .GIF is loving annoying as hell and incredibly fiddly. You might have noticed that I only showed Ibble's side when it was absolutely necessary - that was why. I got lazy.
3) It's kinda weird having planned this out a while back with using something from Walfie as a faux VTuber avatar / faux facecam and releasing it on April Fools Day, just to have the HoloEN crew do a thing with their avatars turning into Walfie representations as well.
4) I'm still very proud of the ending, even though it's incredibly budget.

yeah, as cool as kaiserreich is, if you aren't playing a major a lot of the times the game is effectively over once you've won whatever thunderdome you start in. You can try to build up and finish off whatever other majors exist but it's always such a pain that it's hard to bother. Hell, even if you are a major like france or germany a lot of the time it's just too much of a pain to finish up afterwards.

Wait. Watching robot wars? You mean some sort of super robot wars anime? or one of Tomino's many epic series?

Also, are the pink nations all socialist allies, including the States, Canada and Britain?

And with Britain in the way there, how does that affect your logistics? It feels that you wouldn't be able to capture territories unless your troops were at the front.

No, Robot Wars, a British TV show which involved actual robots, a lot of which were janky as gently caress, fighting each other. At the time I was recording that session, I was in the process of rewatching the entire series, so I figured I might as well watch some more since the game doesn't exactly need my attention.

sb hermit posted:

Britain was in the Third Internationale, but the States and Canada aren't.

Territory control doesn't really mean they're "in the way". We're allies in the same war, so our territory is treated the same way as theirs with the exception of us not being able to build/repair on theirs and vice versa. The front line contains British troops, German troops, French troops, Italian troops... everybody fights at the same front line, but somebody has to be the official "controller" of the captured territory.

Favorite part was playing CSA in the second American civil war and bringing glorious nontotalitarian syndicalism to the US.

Least favorite part was that after I had knocked out Canada and prepared to shift my focus to saving the Internationale in Europe, the second Weltkrieg was already won after Germany collapsed. Felt anticlimactic.

Hm, regular KR... I must admit, I hardly play it these days. I think that game for the LP was my last KR game, and that was at least over a month ago. I've switched over to Kaiserredux, which simply has more interesting content. Of course, I've still played more than my share of regular KR. So let's see...

Favorite:
- The thunderdomes like Balkans Pact vs. Bulgaria, Ottomans vs. Cairo Pact, the India threesome, Qing vs. Fengtian vs. Guangxi and such are fun to play, and make for a more bite-sized experience that has a solid endpoint after being the winner of the thunderdome without having to get involved in a major slog, which does add replayability.

Least favorite:
- PERFORMANCE. It might just be some sort of confirmation bias based on what I hear from other people, but KR trails only Millennium Dawn in the "mods that run like rear end" tier list in my mind.
- The Entente is poo poo and might as well not exist in the Weltkrieg, unless it gets Russia in on its side, in which case it's just "Russia plus some nerds".
- The thunderdomes make it so that those areas rarely if ever get involved in the big war, leading to it being localized to Europe a lot.
- The USA basically never gets involved in the big war - or rather, performance has gotten so poo poo by the point they can get involved that you just don't loving bother anymore.
- Germany/France can devolve into a defensive slugfest that is just a pain in the rear end to play.
- WW2 is a bit inflexible for my tastes. It will be France/Britain/North Italy vs. Germany and eventually Austria, basically.

However, if you don't play it many times, you will very likely arrive at Ibble's viewpoint of "it's vanilla with different countries".

...I guess I am a bit down on standard KR. Hm.

Then you have a responsibility that no man has ever faced. You have your fear which could become reality, and you have Godzilla, which is reality.

Some of my favorite KR campaigns in Darkest Hour were as the ... German South Chinese state, I forget the name, and Canada retaking the Union of Britain. I feel like neither of those are really doable anymore in the current version.

What's all this then?

This is Equestria at War, one of the largest mods for Hearts of Iron 4.

...ponies?

Yes, ponies. Also griffons. And more.

So, what's it about?

Well, as the name might imply, this is a mod set in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic universe. In a way. Most of the world here is basically made up by the mod creators, but it does use main characters from the show in some capacity. Except now it's World War 2.

And, well, it's probably one of, if not the best mod made for Hearts of Iron 4. Everything in it just works, and there's a copious amount of content for basically every country you can see. While it doesn't go as crazy as some other mods on the custom mechanics and such, I would say it's the most polished experience you can have in Hearts of Iron 4 modding.

So much like with Kaiserreich, we start out by going through the world the mod gives us before eventually settling on our choice: The Griffonian Empire.

Never attribute to malice that post which is adequately explained by a poor sense of humor.
My heart broke when you mentioned doing the hidden path for the Empire. How could you do that to the poor boy?

This mod does have a truly staggering amount of content. To illustrate: In addition to nearly every country having its own focus tree (including secret paths for some nations), many of those small "irrelevant" countries have interesting internal narratives. Generally, the smaller countries that don't go conquering things left and right have internal mechanics to make things more interesting.

Vedina, the country only described as having "something about a marriage" in the video, is all about grooming the crown princess in your favoured direction - she'll be your leader in the end, but you decide how she turns out. Austurland has a somewhat similar "CYOA" ruler background.

Barrad, the tiny Supremacist (the mod's equivalent to fascism) country south of the riverlands, is a conclave of five unscrupulous magic experts who only occasionally cooperate.

One obscure path requires you to trigger a civil war in Equestria, then play as a breakaway state in the four-way thunderdome in the southeast, win, and then tear down the regime you just built from the inside.

The Great Equestrian War has a notable amount of post-war content in the event of a changeling victory. It's almost all narrative events, but it's pretty compelling. Or you could play as the pony resistance and liberate the country after a long, hard-fought struggle.

And yet, despite all this, the funniest thing is that Griffonstone - The only country in Griffonia to actually exist in the show's canon - has no content at all in the current version of the mod as far as I'm aware.

Not unless you count Gallus from the show's Canon as the Harmony leader as 'content'.

Also hello, resident Equestria at War localizer here! I write stuff. Still working on Zebrica, still crying on the inside at the sheer amount of CONTENT going into that continent.

They say money can't buy happiness, but it sure does help.
Oh hey, it's the mod that has actually tempted me to get Hearts of Iron 4 despite my longstanding history of trying these sorts of games, remembering "oh right I don't actually like warfare very much and prefer swift precision strike conquest/manipulation if I need to and generally prefer to not take over enemy holdings, but that's all generally an expected part of this", and then uninstalling only to repeat the process roughly 10-11 months later after hearing about a potentially promising update. I fell off actually watching FiM a number of seasons before it ended but still have a lot of fondness for it, and in the slightly-more-my-speed Civilization games, a personal favorite to play as in Civ 5 is a Changeling Empire mod.

This seems like as good a time as any to actually watch this LP that I've been putting off for months, or even to just jump in here for the time being. Should be fun.

Oh, yeah, can I just bring up that the Changelings postwar content is like literally loving Generalplan Ost but can actually work? And while this is completely expected given that the Changelings are a Nazi Germany analogue down to the hats the generals wear, it's still bizarre to me that the loving pony mod has the most complete Generalplan Ost experience of all things?

Most mods just give you some Reichskommissariat puppets you can release over the former Soviet territory and call it a day, but not the pony mod! It gives you the full experience that comes with conquering a massive amount of land filled with a rebellious populace as a fascist dictatorship, and the sort of "pacification" that happens in that scenario.

Das Panzer

Don't forget the fact that Generallplan Ost's Manehattan (haha horse pun we are hilarious i promise) protectorate has the ability to start a revolution to liberate Equestria and yeet the bug nazis.

It's difficult but unironically has some of my favorite writing to read. Jaspy, the dev for that path did fantastic work and I recommend screwing up everything in Manehattan and causing them to show up just to read all the fun stuff.

This episode was recorded over a month ago and was rendered exactly a month ago. I have since also recorded the entirety of the EaW campaign.

Whether Ibble's audio is good or not is basically a gamble from session to session due to a very sensitive mic picking up absolutely loving everything, and editing on my end can only do so much, not helped by my amateurish audio editing skills.

I think that session, which ended with this video, was particularly bad, and the following episodes are better.

The first campaign, where we played as Germany in the vanilla game, was the campaign where I spent a lot of time explaining mechanics to Ibble. Where did all this lore come from? Is there like an established canon of fan fiction, or was it entirely organic for this mod?

NeverHelm
Aug 9, 2017

Never attribute to malice that post which is adequately explained by a poor sense of humor.
This is all written to the mod, yes. It has had years of development. The only real lore the show had for Griffonia was the Idol of Boreas being a symbol of unity, then being lost leading to a collapse of the old monarchy. There is one "fanon" country (sort of) in the form of the Lunar Empire, which is similar to an old fan country called the New Lunar Republic (the in-game tag is actually NLR) but it's diverged a fair bit.

Outside of Equestria itself, pretty much everything is unique to the mod, and there's still a third continent (Zebrica, an Africa+Asia analogue) on the way. The most recent update actually includes some bits that will tie into that in Wingbardy's focus tree, but is currently unimplemented. I poked around in the files a bit and found a bunch of commented-out events.
