Maybe due to a technicality? Jujutsu Kaisen did start on the 2020 Fall season.

Yeah, only thing that seems off is no Jujutsu kaisen, but it might not have been included in that poll since it was a fall season anime that continued into winter without a break.

If you really want to be pedantic the #1 anime on that list was a really late Fall 2020 anime that extended into Winter 2021.

tbf, AoT is balls-slappingly popular so it'll always get an exception. Like it might not sub for Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya or Captain Tsubasa, but most of my non-anime-watching buddies totally gently caress with AoT.

Not as popular as bastard-crushing but quite a bit more popular than slam-dancing.

Unrelated to anything, has anyone played this or have any interest in giving it a whirl?

anime is not good
blanking on the name of a manga, and since mangadex is down, I can't check my follows

involved two characters made immortal by a magic cataclysm wandering through the shattered world trying to find a way to kill themselves. involved a lot of somber themes, but the main characters themselves are very slapstick

googling gives me nothing

edit: i picked it up initially because someone linked it in this thread, so at least one of you knows

I think I will continue
watching this twilight world
as long as time flows.
Okay, my buddy and I just watched like 4, maybe 5 episodes of Wandering Witch Elaina, and holy HELL is she a terrible person. It ended up with us just losing our poo poo (very loudly) as more and more horrific things happen around her and she just basically says, "Well that's odd. Oh well," and just flies away.

Thing is, I read a bit of the manga a while back, that's why we picked it up. I remember some of the messed-up situations from the manga, but Elaina didn't come off nearly as badly there. Sure - maybe she didn't dwell on things and lament when bad things happened, but she did seem to care like, in the moment.

I guess my question is: Are we overreacting? Did the anime kinda shift her tone a bit, maybe make it seem like she's a trust fund kid on a gap year going around the world doing feel-good third-world tourism but not actually, y'know, helping?

That was exactly the reaction I had (more or less). Stopped watching after only a few episodes.

Going by the various posts as it was airing, it seems like it's a bit of "it was always there" and "the anime adaptation exacerbated it due to trimming stories run time and her own internal thoughts"

Endorph

the anime adaptation trimmed our her own thoughts, cut out some of the more lowkey stories, and also amped every story's darkness up by like 10-15%.

theres an entire bit in the manga where she literally cries about being unable to help people that comes later than the anime got to but also feels like a kind of important character thing

Cool, ty. I’m glad I wasn’t lying to him when trying to defend her a little bit.

I’m not sure if I would’ve preferred they didn’t trim anything out though, it’s kind of a hoot watching the anime and shouting about it.

i made it to episode 7 of ex-arm

they were so lazy they created a character who talks through a glowing bracelet so they didn't have to animate the mouth

and then they had a fight with a villain whose power makes you temporarily deaf so that they didn't have to do sound design

As everyone else said, the Season Chat Thread was a weekly occurrence of "Wow, Elaina is hosed up/what's with the miseryporn".

Then we get the last episode which provides a convenient out for why Elaina was written as wildly different and blasé story to story and honestly it's just a perfect lovely end to the lovely sandwich they were serving all season.

its based on a manga so both of those were presumably plot elements in the original manga

The Elaina novels have their issues but the manga and anime are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to building on something in adaptation versus not and also dropping chunks of what already worked.

So the lesson is: the manga author works as part of a duo on The Apothecary Diaries manga and that's a fun time
