Yeah, the Dune books are notorious for their decline in quality. There's disagreement about when it stops being good, but there's agreement that after than point, it never gets significantly better again. There are people who defend God Emperor of Dune, but I'm not aware of anyone who thinks highly of the Herbert books after that, let alone the Kevin J. Anderson prequels.

There's an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy that basically adapts the plot of God Emperor of Dune wholesale so I guess someone out there really liked it.

That was by Dave Wolverton, not KJA!

I can see how you got confused though - Courtship of Princess Leia has the planet of redhead dominatrices, but KJA only wrote about the one redhead dominatrix admiral.

Fun fact about Wolverton, he taught writing at BYU and one of his students was Brandon Sanderson.

I've called it corporate senility, you see it sometimes in cases like Konami, Games Workshop and Capcom for a whole when the management is a mix of dysfunctional, out of touch and literally senile that reality can't effectively penetrate, and you get bizarre, unpredictable decisions that seem actively spiteful towards their fans and the public. Especially since a lot of them clearly don't understand what products they actually make and why people like them.

None of those examples even compare, all three of those companies have increased their revenues since they made the decision you're probably disagreeing with. Konami alone has increased revenue by something like 30% since dropping video games to focus on slot and pachinko machines.

This person must have cummed buckets when they negotiated splitting The Hobbit into three movies.

In the Lindsay Ellis Hobbit video it was explained that the financing structure gave WB a much bigger share of the profits for a second and third movie. Movie financing is so fascinating in Hollywood and accounts for a lot of the decisions behind the scenes.

It's the reason the Halo movie never got made. Microsoft tried to force a bidding war for the rights, but studio executives basically colluded over lunch, realized what MS was asking would make the movie impossible to finance, and collectively told MS to fuk off.

I really wonder what the quality of the first film would've been if Jackson made the choice to make the second two films bridge films. I think we all would have been much happier with the outcome.

When the Hobbit was originally going to be two films only, and written and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, that was the idea. The first one was going to adapt The Hobbit, and the second film was going to link Hobbit and LOTR. Then when the Del Toro left, Jackson took over, and the decision was made to make it a trilogy, that's when they decided to chop it up.

IIRC, the decision to expand it from two to three movies was only done after filming was completed, too. Which also explains a lot.

I'm still amazed Warner Bros had enough faith in Denis Villeneuve's Dune to split it in two. Are they filming part two at the same time as one, or is it likely we'll only get half of Dune adapted?

From what I understand, they only filmed part 1. So any sequel would be a new production. Why? idk seems like it would have made more sense to film both back to back.

Shooting two films at once is a bit of a risk and from what I understand, this was the only way Villeneuve could get the studio to commit, and though it risks leaving the story unfinished, he's enough of a Dune fan that he thought it was worth the risk.

I also feel that at the time there was a certain "Well this is like sci-fi Game of Thrones" mentality which made it seem like a safer bet.

Is there anything else big coming out that will be able to compete with it at the box office? Aka is there any chance that the pandemic will end up boosting its numbers? Or are they still doing the day-and-date with HBO?

Kong's numbers may not be great for normal times, but I can't imagine they're not thrilled to have as much of a hit on their hands as possible at the moment.

I think Dune's going to be delayed as a theater-only release to preserve its franchise potential.

Dune's set for October by which point things will probably be better but probably not like the before times.

Like if nothing else the numbers do seem to indicate there is an interest in going back to theaters, it's a question more of when people are more comfortable (which still requires way more vaccinations than we've got now, so, y'know, patience.)

This is very astute. I feel like trying to get that sort of brand identification for a big tent brand is just chasing the impossible, because there is no WB other than "makes movies."

Disney got their brand identity by going the other way. They had their family friendly/for children branding set in the public consciousness (for, like, 60 years) then started gobbling everything else up. But they still know better than to try to mix their oil and water (unlike WB, with the Droogs cheering on tweety bird.) Like, there's a reason It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia isn't on Disney+.

Always Sunny is on Disney+ Star in Canada and I’m sure will end up on Disney + when they fold all the IP into it.
