Your best luck will probably be to buy something off the floor of the shop as soon as it comes in. Pre-orders are on a very long waiting list but bikes do seem to be moving through in spurts. You might not get the build or color you want but at least you might have a bike. See if the shops have an online store front and check what they have “In Store” with the filters. Check regularly.

Yo I know this shop has a bunch of bikes in stock and will ship, odds are good they have a Domane left in stock since most of their business is hybrids. You'll pay for shipping probably, but it's better than not getting a bike if they don't gouge you. They apparently just shipped a bike as far as Hawaii this past week.

what.
No its never been like this before. The Covid bike rush wiped out all European distribution of bike parts by June last year and its never really recovered. I know that there's several Shimano parts in particular that aren't due into the country until July/August and thats just parts. New bikes are really struggling too.

Bike parts are too specialised to just ramp up production via new factory lines quickly. Once the factories are running 24/7 theres just not much more they can do.

No. Cov-2 was the true double whammy of increased demand and obliterated production/logistics.

Our washing machine is broken. It’s going to take 2-4 weeks to get 3 bolts from the factory to repair it. Apparently these washing machine bolts that hold sheet metal to sheet metal are so specialized you can’t just replace them elsewhere. At least that was the lecture I got twice, along with a 20 minute “COVID has screwed up supply chains” primer as well.

One of my coworkers mentioned during our poo poo talk happy hour this week that her husband wants to get a better bike. Since he’s about my height I just hit CL for what I would ride and found some decent options. One of them was a low mile older 58cm carbon Diverge for $2200.

If he’s gonna insist on something new l’ll probably have to send him to that Dakota Outdoors Facebook page because I don’t think you’re finding any bikes new here that aren’t $5000 and up.

My 2 week old washing machine broke as coronavirus was ripping thorough Wuhan, repair man said it needed a new belt and he would have to order it in. Next day I got a call from Argos saying pick a new washing machine in the same price range +£100 as compensation, but best make it Indesit love because that’s the only one in the range with new parts coming in via Japan.

We got our set right before lockdown hit too, I got home drunk from one of the 2 soccer matches I got to attend in 2020 to help unload the truck. Fortunately my wife insisted on buying a SpeedQueen set, so the factory is in the US. Otherwise I’d be shopping for a new washer. As it is I’m about to drag my laundry down to the laundromat so I can have clean drawers.

Can somebody give me the run down on folders, different fold mechanisms, and what you're paying for?

My mom has been talking about getting a folding bike for ages, and finally decided she really wants one, which just happens to be during the great pandemic bike shortage. She's a lapsed cyclist, used to ride 50+ miles a week at a moderate pace with her friends twenty years ago and has no bikes right now. She's wanting to get a bike again because my daughter is starting to ride, and wants a folder because my parents are in a small apartment, and she wants to be able to carry it in a small car trunk, and also stash it inside an RV easily for RV campground riding.

My dad and I will be chipping in on this for her birthday, and my understanding is that most folders are so adjustable that one size fits all, so if it's a bike that could fit both my 5'5" mom and 6'3" dad, then budget is basically up to a Brompton ($2k?), and I'd inherit it whenever they're done with it. I want to focus mostly on how she'd use it though, so what would be a good folding bike for:

  • A grandma riding slowly on MUPs and parks with grandkids and family, but including a decent gear range. Parks here can be proper hilly.
  • Carried regularly in car trunks or inside an RV, probably never carried on public transit
  • Good long-term support and serviceable at normal bike shops

I don't actually know the pros and cons of a Dahon vs Bike Friday Packit vs Brompton vs something much cheaper from a big brand like a Giant Expressway, and I'd appreciate a lay of the land of folding bikes.

I'm close to 6'3" and my Brompton (with the telescoping seat post) easily fits me and would work fine with someone as tall as 6'6".

It also fits my 5'2" wife.

Note: The weight capacity of a Brompton is 242lbs, that may be a factor for your dad. There's also this little trick:

Yeah, because I can quickly remove the seat (with the telescoping post option), I've taken the bike on airlines as carry on. Which enabled trips like this:

The other obvious stuff is the quick fold and cool front bag system.

The price correlates to how easily and compactly the bike folds. I don't think you can get better than the Brompton with multi-gear capability.
The Brompton folds up very cubically, fwiw, but more than enough to throw in a trunk or inside an RV's luggage space.
The cheapest folders might take up more than half of a small car's trunk because they don't fold as efficiently. This could be a problem, or not.
Compare the Expressway:

and the Brompton:

I've tried to make the visual comparison fair, as the Brompton's wheel is two inches smaller in diameter.

The Pakit folds very flat, but wider than a Brompton, like a pancake.

Some of the cheaper folders don't have good provisions for rolling the folded bike, which again may not be an issue.

Did my first overnight bikepacking trip with loaded saddlebags on this frame.

Bike handles very strangely with food and sleep gear weighing the rear down and I can tell I'm still skittish on dirt after eating poo poo a few weeks back, but I'll get over it with time.

Also had an excuse to wear my idiot rear end reflecto hypebeast jacket and become the Techno Pope.

Our group came across a dude yelling for help in a ravine he tried to take as a shortcut off the top of Rattlesnake Peak, but he bushwhacked himself into a super lovely position and then ran out of daylight.

My homie that has wilderness medical training got up to the dude and thankfully he was uninjured. He'd already activated an SOS device thinking he was going to have to spend the night on the mountain and a SAR bird came looking for him shortly after we had him back on the trail and were giving him water, but he was able to walk out on his own.

My phone also lost it's loving mind and boot looped until it thought the date was late October 2020, causing Strava to think I had pedaled 3800 hours into the past.

An ✨eventful evening✨

Agreed, it was basically to see how things looked and how stock was. Basically like others have said the stock was pretty low, I'd say 40% of what was on the racks was on some layaway system so it was basically spoken for. The few bikes I saw that I'd be interested in were a size small only. The guy did say that they should expect shipments around mid April to May, gave me his card and said if I picked out something for sure to send an email and they'll try to set it aside and I can put a deposit to secure it.

I guess I'll be a Master of The Road (tm) for the time being, overall it was pretty impressive shop in a good area of Houston (it's by NASA and million dollar homes, lots of bike paths and parks) so I don't think they're trying to push for sales for the sake of sales. In terms of keeping the momentum of wanting to ride, with my health problems I really don't see myself going back to my old ways, the past two weeks I've actually wanted to get out and ride around some.

Anyways thanks for the suggestions so far, I'll keep an eye out on this thread for awhile.

I was watching Brompton’s stock on their webpage last week and a variety that I wanted became available, the M6L With the dynamo hub. I went ahead and snatched it up and it arrived within 48 hours. I’m really impressed with the speed that they shipped that out.

Took it out on a 25 km ride over the weekend and I was really impressed with it. I have a pretty hefty hill that I have to go over to reach the main bike paths in my city and while I did have to drop the gearing down all the way to the lowest here I was able to go up that hill without stopping the entire way some thing I’ve never been able to do on another bike before without a motor attached. I guess I chose the correct gearing.

I did have to keep raising the seat because it kept dropping when I went over bumps but when I got back home I tightened the lever for locking the seat in place slightly so hopefully that will fix that issue.

I had more than a few people ask me about my bike. It was actually pretty surprising how many people are interested in the Brompton.

I’m now looking at what sort of bags to get for it since I want to be able to use it to replace the use of my car at least some of the time. That’s how I justified getting it for myself, but Brompton‘s bags look to be a really expensive. I knew this before I ordered but I’m wondering if anyone has found any options, perhaps third-party bags, that work well for grocery shopping or things like that. I’m prepared to pay the Brompton bag tax if I have to but I would prefer not to.

Did you get the rack option? Any pannier can clip to the rack; you just need to make sure they're sized shallow enough for ground clearance.

There's also adapters for the front clip that let's you run it as a front rack:
