It’s still going on, I lost count at how many they’ve shown. They just wrapped up some Spyro and are now streaming God Hand.

Too bad they didn't stick with God Hand for a little while longer. The prototype music is different than the final product, I noticed. And some of the moves he picked up weren't named properly.

lol I took a nap and woke up two hours later to still see it going on. Just a huge trove of PS2 prototypes. Currently showing off a May 2005 build of Shadow of the Colossus, about 5 months before release.

It seems to be mostly near release prototypes though. Probably bought them from a old journalist. Had there been anything of interest?

Code Jockey posted:... huh, I have never heard of the Hyper Neo Geo 64 before. Just so happens an explainer article was posted today: http://nicole.express/2021/ultra-mega-hyper-neo-geo-64.html SNK didn't just roll over and die when 3D came along. I'd imagine the debts they racked up building the new system and it's subsequent failure did more than just a dent in their bottom line. But, even though late 90's Neo Geo games were as good as they've ever been, it's old hardwarem, and in the US arcades were on the way out. There's two Killer 7 prototypes, one from a few months before the game was finished. That game was so weird I have to wonder if anything even stranger didn't make it into the final cut.

theres a bunch of stuff from the earliest trailers that were in the gamecube source leak somebody pulled off an old public ftp a couple of years ago, like entire levels and unfinished cutscenes for the original storyline (and iirc, a couple iterations of the main character models) not sure if those specific prototypes would have anything more interesting

I'm curious if there's really all that much, the game was made in less than a year so I assume most made it to the final game. All of the early screenshots I remember show areas that made it to the final cut but just don't have the same amount of detail. The biggest thing I remember is that Clock Town had these huge murals on the outer walls that would have loved to see fully. I don't know how far they got into the whole 7 day cycle.

Was the game always going to have the time loop mechanic? I could imagine them wanting to make a game that lasted a week, then realizing how most players would react negatively to it and cut it down to 3 days w/time loop, or deciding a week would be too long to play through if the player was restarting the loop for something on day 5 or 6.

I thought it started out as an expanded Ocarina of Time expansion or rerelease before turning into its own game. The Master Quest dungeons were a leftover of that idea.

Yeah, Ura Zelda, but I have heard so so many conflicting things about what Ura Zelda was actually going to be that I have absolutely no idea. A Zelda wiki tells me that there were gonna be two expansions, ura Zelda and zelda gaiden, and master quest was what came of ura Zelda, MM was Zelda gaiden. But if that's true, neither of them seem too 'unreleased', just not DD games they were started as.

The 64DD expansion was the Master Quest dungeons. That much is pretty clear, based on the remaining code for handling 64DD data in the retail release. Based on the data from the Nintendo leak, it may have also been planned to add a "boss rush" style dungeon.

It was cut down to 3 days mostly because 7 days would have pushed development past their tight deadline.

Yeah i feel like that worked out OK, a similar amount of events spread across 6-7 days sounds like a hassle, 3 was a nice manageable number that broke down into 6 sections effectively.

Theres The cutting room floor, anywhere else? https://www.gamingconviction.com/splatterhouse-2-sega-genesis-prototype-surfaces/ Article is 4 years old, but I'm curious if its rom was ever uploaded anywhere. That video is cool as hell, it's impressive that so many game textures are just photo manipulations. There's a similar video I saw a while back that blew my mind and it's the same idea, but on the audio side and samples that Koji Kondo used during the N64 days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQQeVnd2VEk

Levels load quickly, but does the Dreamcast usually buzz like that? I’d expect that since Nintendo limited the number of titles a licensee could publish on the NES a lot more “candidates for production” were brought to a shippable state. lotsa protos. Did Japanese licensees have a similar situation or is it just open season: if everyone wants to make a dragon quest knockoff this quarter; that’s what we’ll have. Do we see many leaked PC protos the same way we’re seeing consoles? Coffee Jones fucked around with this message at 07:54 on Apr 6, 2021 |
