There's no reason why a trans woman couldn't do it though, as long as they transitioned before their voice changed. From what I've read, Moreschi was old and far past his prime when that recording was made.

Is 'male lung capacity' such a game changer though? Seriously I have no idea about that poo poo at all, but the difference between male and female lung capacity is really big enough to make a practical difference? It kinda feels like 'women can reach notes men can't so we gotta invent a way males are naturally superior anyway'-bullshit to me.

I mean, free-diving for pearls and assorted mollusks is traditionally a woman's job in Japan because of their supposed greater lung capacity.

Supposedly the lack of testosterone caused the epiphysis to harden improperly which led to unusually long limbs and ribs, which in tandem with the intensive training they would get as singers, led to the high lung power and breath capacity

I imagine the lungs of people not wearing corsets would have higher capacity

There are natural castrati -- men who never went through puberty because of one disease or another, usually Kallmann syndrome -- singing today. They were much more common fifty years ago. Nowadays, boys with such disorders typically get hormone therapy to induce puberty and they lose their child-like voices. A natural castrato's voice isn't absolutely the same as a surgical castrato, though. Natural castrati's bodies produce no testosterone at all whereas surgical castrati still have the small amount from their pituitary gland. It's debatable how much difference that makes, if it's even detectable, but people have strong opinions about male sopranos. Here's Radu Marian singing the same piece Alessandro Moreschi sings, Ave Maria, for comparison between a natural and surgical castrato: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfrxOKcAkNI The big issue with appreciating Moreschi today, aside from the acoustic recording technology distorting the hell out of the sound and losing the lower frequencies entirely, is that singing styles have changed. Those scooping grace notes that sound like he's singing out of tune and correcting himself were the fashion at the time -- he's very much doing it on purpose. There were other castrati in the Sistine Chapel choir in Moreschi's time. There aren't any solo recordings of them, but they can be heard in some of the choral pieces, like "Laudamus Te". I have a couple original records of Moreschi pressed in 1904 and that's one of them. Castrati are most associated with Baroque opera and there's been a changing attitude as to what to do about them in modern performances. Before the 20th century it was fairly easy: they just didn't perform Baroque operas at all. It was only in the 1910s that there was any real renewed interest in early music. Then, male soprano roles were usually pitched down to baritone. By the 1950s, that was abandoned as a horrible idea and the roles were performed by women en travesti. That's still occasionally done today, but by the turn of this century, castrato parts are almost always performed by countertenors and sopranists (both are changed males, as they're called, who sing in falsetto). Many productions of Italian operas even maintain the tradition of all the roles, male and female characters, being performed by men, as it was legally forbidden at the time for women to appear on stage. It makes a big difference. Sopranos, trebles, countertenors/sopranists, and castrati all have distinct sounds particular to them, though they may be singing the same notes. There may be better examples -- this is the first the turned up when I went searching -- but an example of a sopranist singing Ave Maria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eor8tazO11U
