Oh huh, I see that the whole "smaller fleet" focus means that I should probably get into combat freighters or whatever the gently caress. Normally I'd ignore them completely, so kudos to the dev for figuring out a way to make them relevant.

What would you guys recommend for a hybrid cargo/fuel hauler in the destroyer class? Bonus if it can actually function as a carrier or missile boat, I guess, though once again I'm trying to avoid dedicated carriers nowadays because I just can't seem to make them stay the gently caress away from the frontlines, nor have my actual gunships protect them properly.

Why would you want combat freighters? Civilian ships don't count towards your combat bonuses, unless you militarize them. (Don't militarize them.)

Put a a cautious officer in the carrier and fill it with bombers, a cautious officer with fighters will just use them as escorts. Also mixing fighters and bombers in the same ship is a bad idea, because it will cause the fighters to retreat with the bombers when they are done with their run.

Huh, I guess the Starship Legends bonuses are making them count as combat ships in the fleet calculation. I noticed my freighters with no ranks don't count.

I really enjoy all the little fluff moments in the plotline, like when you get hassled by different intelligence operatives. It looks like it's mostly flavor (and sometimes the responses are a bit Yes, Sarcastic Yes, No(yes) ) but it fleshes things out and theres plenty of hooks there for mild branching should they decide to do that

Pirate Mules and Luddic Path Cerberi are still pretty decent in the role, and Gemini actually has a niche now. 2 of them are only 3 points more expensive than a drover, for the same number of wings in flight, and they're civilian ships and don't count in your combat ship points for the purpose of skill boosts.

Is there any way to locate the coronal hypershunt using console commands? I've been to every system and only noticed one, and I really don't feel like checking all of them again. Is it like the inactive gate in that it shows up as soon as you enter the system?

OwlFancier

They show up as a quite large sensor siganture near the star, but you have to be in range to see that.

They only show up in blue giant/supergiant systems though. Seemingly with a supergiant preference.

There is. devmode in console, then ctrl+z for unlimited sensor range. Then you can check the system map and if you turn on names for systems you haven't visited they should be color coded. Not entirely sure what color they are but there are only 2 of them and as has been said they only show up in blue giant/supergiant systems.

Beware that devmode seems to turn on instant build for colonies so either do all of this while paused and turn off devmode (and press ctrl z again) before unpausing or save before doing this.

Not an easy way. Try searching your save file for hypershunt, and when you find it scroll up to see the system name. Searching an xml file that big does take time though so don't be surprised if Notepad++ or whatever you use freezes for a bit.

How are people outfitting their Champions? I've set mine up using the Elite loadout, Tachyon Lance, Cyclone Reaper, 2 Heavy Needlers and 4 Burst PD, but that leaves so many small energy slots unfilled and only the Tachyon Lance really benefits from the High Energy Focus system. Anyone had luck with alternate builds?

I can see 2x Ion Pulser, Autopulse, Expanded Magazines working but at that point it's just a fat Sunder and probably not worth the DP. Swapping the Burst PD for a front row full of 4 Tac Lasers & 2 Gravitons seems better, but then realistically an Eagle is probably going to do the long-range beam carrier job better with 3 Tac/3 Gravitons and a front row of Maulers.

4 mining lasers in the front do a surprisingly decent job at PD if you've got the +weapons range hullmod, and only take up 8 points.

It's not explicitly said that the game tends to want you to run a small fast fleet because you're going to spend most of your time running away from things for multiple reasons.
1. it's not profitable to lose 3/4ths of your fleet every engagement
2. The enemy fleet WILL murderize your fleet due to their abundance of officers and superior fleet.
3. enemy doesn't care about losses and will happily suicide their capital ships if it means you lose more
4. if you get caught you either need to burn a very valuable story point, have to do a retreating battle, or a battle to do enough DP damage that you can safely retreat.
5. If you have to do a retreating battle if you have anything slower than an SO frigate and it can't shoot back then it's probably gonna die.
6. Most small ships tend to be more efficient then larger ships with the exception of atlas and prometheus
7. Combat tends to be expensive.
8. Wolfpack and frigate officer skills tend to end up with frigates that can murderize larger ships if they aren't threatened.

This is the closest thing I could find: https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=20114.0

It should allow you transfer control to a Radiant in combat but you can't use it as your flagship and you have to acquire it with the skill as usual.

You can do an all beam fit which works quite well with the energy focus, but it also will take a close up fit with blasters and a paladin PD, or a plasma cannon.

Basically the front has great turret coverage so anything you put in it will work, I like HVDs and a HIL for long range but it's hard to go wrong honestly, the main choice is just how much you want to lean into the energy focus with your medium weapons, as kinetic ballistics can be more useful but you're not getting the maximum utility out of the ship system.

You can also go full pew pew with pulse/ir lasers if you want, quite efficient and versatile.

It's not great guidance, but make sure you chat with EVERYONE at the Laicaille hab.
If you're still stuck the clue in the Laicaille hab is that there's a secret warehouse. Where else in the system could a warehouse be besides the Laicaille hab?

Further hint: The pirate base in the system has the second piece of evidence you'll need. Chat with the boss.

I agree that it's a bit of a finicky stage of the mission where you have to do something of the equivalent of a pixel hunt to find the next clue. Better marker activity would be beneficial to at least directing you where to go if not necessarily what to do when you get there.

I may be alone in this, but I really enjoy just getting every ship/faction mod possible and throwing it into the Nex fire.

The ships may be of varying design quality, but I really enjoy the experience of docking at a new port and seeing two dozen ships I've never seen before. Much better than the usual same-as-always mix of Kites, Condors, and Lashers.

I know there are mods that add to the existing ship line-up but I wish we had officially gotten another mid-line capital instead of cruiser. Nothing against the Champion mind you (it's probably my favourite of the mid-line cruisers), but by my count there's literally only one mid-line capital versus three high-tech and four (two proper and two converted) low-tech options (or five if you count the XIV Legion as separate since it has significantly different hardpoints) for combat capitals. Would have liked to see maybe another carrier option that maybe sits between the Legion's full-on battlecarrier and the Astral's full-on fleet carrier, but I'm admittedly biased since I love carriers and love to fly my flag off one.
