I can just hear the discussion with the Chrysler licensing guy "yeah, the phone needs to have the exact body shape, it's part of the trademark.... uh huh.. yep yeah including the stupid front bumpers--look I don't make the rules here" *slams down Garfield phone, snapping the eyes shut with an audible 'clack'*

Similarly, Subaru Japan has recently been taking orders for commemorative statues of the EJ20. Solid metal, less than 10cm tall and they want $3000ish dollars for it. You could literally buy a working EJ20 for that much, with a car attached if you're lucky.

That's totally a valid opinion but you also have to remember that it was a low budget non-hollywood movie, shot by a guy who wasn't really a director yet (he was a Doctor), with no real stars in the movie (at the time) in the late '70's.

A lot of action movies don't hold up as well when compared to modern day movies. Even the French Connection, which I was always told has "The greatest car chase ever" by my dad, doesn't have nearly the impact it did when it was made just due to the advances in film making and special effects.

The "chase" in The French Connection was so disappointing, after hearing it talked up for years. He's chasing the subway. A fixed route, with known destinations. I think the two elements were that it was a race against time in the movie, and that the actual filming was stolen footage, they didn't have permits or anything. Well, maybe some loose cooperation from the police (third item or so down)

But since this is the awesome AI stuff thread, here's one of the chases from 1998's Ronin, directed by John Frankenheimer, who also directed Grand Prix.

Well, hell, for $3000 I'll find and polish up an empty block and heads and build a display mount for it.

These older chase scenes are horrifying to me with the brakes those cars had. I think that's probably what I like about them. It's much less absurd fast and the furious (which is also good in its way, come at me) and more "these stunt folks could die at any moment."

Ronin was a good flick. Maybe some Bimmerhead can chime in cause from watching it I thought it was a 535i with M5 turbine wheels. Didn't think it was a real M5.

I always enjoyed Bullitt. Some say the movie is boring but it is drat accurate with everything in it. The car chase did have some bad editing. And the fact the cars didn't have limited slip annoys me.

I love the car chase, but "some bad editing" is an understatement if you 1.) understand SF geography and 2.) look out for that same VW beetle.

I also seem to remember hearing that they did "some things" to the mustang used for several of the scenes to try to keep it from being consistently eaten by the charger.

The only part that pisses me off is the single scene of CGI tire smoke from the diesel Mercedes. It didn’t age well, and 100% would have been better to just do without.

I would expect a real M5, especially given the director's historical choice of camera cars includes GT40s.

I thought I had heard that the chase scene in Bullitt wasn't exactly authorized or permitted by the city but they just went ahead and did it anyways. Or maybe it was a different movie? I do remember hearing the Blues Brothers really pissed off the city of Chicago though.

That was The French Connection, and the crash with the white car was an innocent bystander.

However, I couldn't find photos of what it would look like deployed or what it does, exactly.
