Back when I still had a car all my money would go into keeping it running. Gas, parts, oil, insurance, it loving sucked and I hated having to put effort into getting where I needed to go. Mass transit is a lot better, I can just tune out and not worry about being liable if the vehicle gets in a wreck.

sounds like someone didnt own a honda or toyota

but yes, mass transit is way better, although actual good mass transit is the domain of bougie who can afford to live near close to good trains. most of the time for a large % of america, a bus ride will take like 2x as long, unreliable, and if you're a relatively attractive young female then also a fair bit of sexual harassment/assault.

yeah this is literally the textbook example of our cool economy keeping people in poverty

if you're low on cash you buy a cheap car and constantly have to do maintenance until you buy another junker in two years

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/72745-the-reason-that-the-rich-were-so-rich-vimes-reasoned

quote:

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

Take that example and apply it to consumer credit. Can’t buy X outright? Well we can loan you the money at a % rate per annum so you end up paying more for the same item that someone who has the money to buy it with cash and oh we have made certain items that are almost a requirement aka cars, smart phones so expensive that only a fraction of the population can buy cash and everyone else has to get it on credit. Oh and if the rich want credit well we give it to them at 0% interest anyway lol.

It's always been expensive to be poor. Fines and fees always represent a greater percentage of a poor person's wealth.

yup

when you're poor, trying to pay bills is a nightmare even when you have the money to cover them

when you have a steady income and direct deposit your wages into a no-fee checking account you can pay bills online without even thinking about it

but when you're unbanked for whatever reason, every bill has extra predatory fees (wiring fees, check cashing fees, etc) and hoops to jump through

when you're cash only, paying bills is slower and more laborious, which leads to late payments and even more fees!

Trading naked options is dumb when you can just go so far out of the money and cover yourself for a buck you can still get hosed but there is a limit on how hosed.
