berserk's first arc is a serious war story, and then afterwards it becomes the story of a broken down, sad man slowly finding friends and learning to trust again, and being torn between his impulse to protect and nurture those companions and his twisted desire for revenge against the person who took everything from him to begin with. it is a mostly emotional drama, with the twisted, tattered relationship between guts and griffith at its center.
