Your time will come.
It really is amazing how efficient certain people can be about things like that. A lot of times you really just have to know who to call. And if you don't know who to call... you might have to redeploy to go get a day zero drop because everyone else is so stupid.

Any 17A's here?

Former Navy officer and current civilian acquisition professional interested in going Reserve or Guard 17A. Do reserve/guard get the same entry level training as active duty? Where do they get stationed? Is it less/more BS than what average reservists have to deal with?

When I was trying to get out of the Navy I tried to blue to green to 17A, and while the navy stalled all my requests so I never got super far, it seemed like the Army (guard) only gave a poo poo about my ASVAB score, they promised that would be open to me, while the Air Force said hell no unless you’re already like a senior IT guy.

I was enlisted but my understanding is that the all the entry level training is the same (you might go to a Guard-only OCS program but the curriculum is the same) and I'm pretty sure all components (regular, reserve, and guard) go to the same school for their job-specific training (for 17A I think it's Fort Gordon, GA).

As far as where you're stationed once you're done, it's based entirely on where your unit is. Reserve and Guard members don't PCS, they stay in one place until they choose to move.

So you'd find a unit that has an opening for a 17A and be assigned to them until you leave for whatever reason.

You’d go to basic training then OCS then cyber bolc. So like a year or so. The NG is more combat arms so you’re probably looking at a reserve unit. I’m pretty sure that there’s unit that do that/need that mos in the DC/Nova area.

I like the idea of centralized promotions being mandatory in your initial primary. I like that SPC Dingbat can’t be held back from his chance by a SL who just doesn’t like their joe.

But for a large amount of us (single contract soldiers) we have a gun to our head to invest a large amount of time into preparing and going to the board, at a critical juncture when we are in a dead sprint to complete TAP, secure a job, enroll in college, or use Workex/CSP/Vie-25. It’s antithetical to the entire TAP philosophy.

Why is the soldier not allowed to sign an MFR stating they do not wish to promote, take their bar, and move on? I am at risk of losing my chance to secure education that could prove vital to my civilian future, so that I can purposely bomb a board, which may hurt my chances to get approval from the CSM/BC to take part in the program.

Alternatively, could you just bar me personally? Think about it. You have the chance to do maybe the funniest thing anyone in the Army has ever done. The top man, barring a lowly Specialist because he asked on Reddit. My 1SG might actually have a stroke.

I invented the line.

I mean, the dude has a point. Why generate a bunch of paperwork every month to say SPC Whoever doesn't want the board and is leaving the Army? When you combine the paperwork with command that have the memory of a gnat, you waste a bunch of time on soldiers that don't care or want the attention.

I had to stand in the 1SG/CSM office soooo many times because I had soldiers with a plan that didn't include a board appearance so they would have a "(P)" after their rank for the remaining 10 months of service (including ETS leave). Make it easy on everyone.

*shrug* We all find our way into being contractors these days.

I absolutely was that E-4 in the First Sergeant's office watching his delicate little NCO brain break when trying to wrap itself around why I did not give a single, solitary gently caress about going to the board. Across multiple units and repeatedly at each one I would have to confirm that I really, truly did not give a gently caress about wasting time with the dog and pony show of the board, I knew my MOS would never promote me to E5, I did not care at all to learn the history of whatever unit I was in for that year or how to sit at the position of attention, it was a complete waste of my time and I would put forth effort to actively avoid the entire god drat poo poo show.

The guys I was with even put a mention of it in my PCS plaque out of Korea.

When I was at Campbell we had a phrase “blown in place.” I’m sure a lot of us know the phrase but for those that don’t know, it’s what we called blowing up UXOs/IEDs wherever they were found.

My unit also used it to mean correct a soldier on the spot.

For example “I saw PFC Idiot doing something that I’m overreacting about, so I smoked the poo poo out of him right there.”

“drat, he got blown in place.”

When I went to the board the first time at a different duty station I was super nervous. I was asked how I would react if I saw a soldier harassing a woman.

Without thinking I said “he’d get blown in place.”

This was not the correct answer.

I was not promoted.

The Army correctly assumed that not enough people would want a leadership position if offered it and made it the only option for advancement past a certain level.

However, in typical Army fashion, they either failed to realize or didn't care that doing so would create two major problems:

1) Forcing people into leadership positions they don't want doesn't make good leaders and no amount of "training" can change that.
2) Setting the bar at E-loving-4 as the end of the road is insanely stupid

It also completely bypasses the problem of "being in leadership positions sucks an endless amount" and doesn't even begin to address the culture problems - if anything it reinforces it and makes it worse.

I've thought of a solution a few times and the best I can come up with is a quasi "spec 5 / spec 6" rank (spec 6 allowing you to serve until retirement) that requires testing into like the Navy does. But then I realized I've basically just created a dollar store version of WOs.
