Hosting, I can get through a mission while taking little to no damage. The game was starting to feel a little trivial and I figured it was time to move up to cata. But then as a client, I don't really understand how you're supposed to avoid constantly taking hits. Seeing an attack coming in and trying to block it before it lands is a waste of effort because it'll still hit you even though your block was up on your screen long beforehand. Pushing and dodging feel similarly useless. Makes the game feel like poo poo tbh. I guess the solution is to always play Elf so you always host.

It's usually not bad with a low ping, but Quickplay has a tendency to match you with people with other regions and/or hosts with awful hardware. Most of the games where I'm a client are quite playable, but it's plainly obvious when I get a lovely host and the experience is much like what you describe

Well that almost makes up for the greatsword and mace and shield being hot garbage.

How is the spear and shield? I haven't played in a few months and I want a break from the ex sword.

GK is definitely fun but the missions to get his cosmetics are absolute rear end.

If you get quickplayed with a halfway decent group of like a bounty hunter / pyro / elf you're not gonna get to do much because everything will explode before you even get in melee range while you still somehow get ratfucked by specials. His ult is basically a "gently caress this particular thing in front of me" button, but SOTT has this on a button too and Engineer has this in a ranged weapon.

That being said the bretonnian sword is in fact really fun to use regardless of which kruber career you play.

Spear and shield is an amazing horde clearer. Push, then 2 lights, repeat. On Merc kruber with all the extra AS and synergy with cleaves it does incredibly well, and the special attack lets you stab multiple plaguerats/zerkers in a row without even dropping your shield. It's fun and very consistent.

Yeah, this is my favorite melee on him by far. With other weapons you need to be careful around elites and having a berserker swinging at you is pretty threatening. With spear+shield you just wade in there and poke them in the face without a care. The armor damage isn't great on its own but the fact that you are so safe and can so easily line up headshot after headshot makes it pretty effective against stormvermin/CWs regardless. Make sure to stack block cost reduction though.

This could help.

I bought the Bretonnia DLC and the weapon pack. Kruber spear and shield feels a lot like Evermaiden Spear and shield where it's surprisingly good at killing specials. Still trying to get the hang of the Bret longsword but it already feels like what the Empire greatsword should have been. I'm wondering what would be a good secondary weapon for Grail Kruber. Ex sword is still God tier but it and the Bret longsword fill similar roles minus the Ex sword headshot multiplier which looks like it could get bumped to insane levels with the right talents.

I cleared my first expedition on Legendary tonight. Leaned on Ironbreaker's Gromril Armor pretty hard. Lucked out and got dupe on career skill but I hosed up because I didn't realize it had such a long cooldown for the censer consumable. Still managed to feed my team tons of medkits. The second to last map was the hardest. Khorne exploding skull curse, gas rats, and Sienna made sure that there was always poo poo exploding everywhere on the screen. Hordes didn't stop coming once we started a winch event. We still managed to kill a troll for a shrine boon in between waves. It was the hardest I have spammed mouse clicking in a long time. Hard to believe the game gets even harder than this!

Anybody got some tips on how to properly utilize the bretonnian longsword and the bretonnian sword and shield?

The important part about the bret sword is that, again not explained anywhere ingame, block stays up while you charge heavy attacks. Makes it very smooth to go into heavies from light attacks to mix it up.

Vargs
Mar 27, 2010

I only really like the Bret LS on Mercenary. The lack of cleave is quite noticeable on other careers. Against pure hordes I tend to have the most luck with light->light->block cancel. The heavies are just a bit too slow. Feels like they would be the safer option due to weapon's special block mechanic but I end up getting hit way more when I use them for anything other than elites.

Bret S&S I can't stand so I have no advice there.

Bret LS is an excellent weapon I've been finding. Give it Off Balance trait, attack speed and bonus versus Chaos and it will rip apart Chaos Warriors.

Question regarding the Bret LS's riposte mechanic. Does the block while holding a charged attack count as a 360 degree block like holding the block button or does it only block in a cone in front of you?

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Drachenfels in Ratfite 1 thanks to the darkness mechanic, but the ones in Ratfite 2 are quite good.

Dual hammers are Back to Ubersreik, also quality maps even if Fatshark was cowards and didn’t include Wizard’s Tower.

I was telling my co-op friend we should play the level with the crazy wizard's tower because it has a room that looks different for each character and it's really cool! Not remembering that it was a VT1 map. Pretty miffed they didn't port that one over

Yeah, must admit I was surprised that wasn't 1 of the 3 imports. Horn of Magnus makes total sense considering it was quite iconic as the first VT1 map, and well liked and it's relevance to the secret mission of RtU, but I'm surprised they picked Engines of War over the Wizard's Tower, which I don't recall being wildly popular back in VT1. (I think Garden of Morr was a good pick, fwiw.)

I am a little bummed that all of VT2's maps are gauntlet style maps. I did like the defence and objective maps from VT1 like Black Powder, the mountaintop map from Drachenfels and the infamous Wheat and Chaff.

The holdout sections of the VT1 maps also feel a lot faster and easier than they were in the first game. The Engines of War holdout section is a breeze in VT2 compared to the frantic basement defence strategies of the original.

Today as the Engineer I knocked a teammate with the gatling gun and hit my teammates with bombs at least three times. The last friendly fire bombing knocked two teammates in one throw during the Burblespue Halescourge boss fight on Legendary.

We won.

I find it amusing how the new ranged weapons for the Elf cause even more friendly fire damage. I though Dorf's clockwork pistol was bad but holy hell throwing spears and the flame bow take off like 10% of your health with each FF incident.

On story stuff.

How exactly are things playing out right now? From what I can glean between banter, Lohner journals on the steam page and what I remember from the lorebook in VT1 a lot has happened.

VT1: Saltspyre recruits Kruber to help escort Sienna to her trial. At an inn they encounter Bardin and then Kerillian, whose horse was eaten by skaven.
VT1 happens and the Five or Four manage to delay the fall of Ubersreik. Next up they make a trip to Drachenfels to keep the Skaven from using it as a base and unleashing evils within. Then they go to Karak Azgaraz to help the Dwarf Hold and keep artifacts safe. At Stromdorf they kill Chieftsin Krech and discover the Skaven are working on cutting a deal with a chaos cult.
The chaos cult is dealt with during Death on the Reik where they rescue Lohner's papers from Halescourge.
The final DLC the Skaven attack the inn, Lohner is actually from the anti skaven unit in Shadow of the Horned Rat, and the Five or Four are captured.

VT2 begins and Ubersreik has fallen with Helmgart now under attack and the alliance between Fester and the Rotbloods now forged. The heroes all get class promotions at some point. Bogenhafen DLC occurs and they keep the sword safe. Back to Ubersreik happens as an illusion. Winds of Magic causes the winds to separate and then they have to mend the weaves. Drachenvels 2.0 happens and a Rotblood sorcerer has taken up residence and killed. He or a Daemon starts whispering to the Five or Four about their dark secrets and nobody is happy when they come back.

Cut to the current state of things and Saltspyre is pretty drat shaken by Drachenfels and decides that the only cure is going on crusade into the Realm of Chaos itself to kill the bastards where they live.

Character wise, everyone has changed somewhat. Kruber was depressed as hell from his family dying in VT1 and has settled into being a functioning alcoholic. Merc Kruber is still a drunk. Huntsman Kruber has found inner peace. Knight Kruber is trying to do better. Grail Knight Kruber drank Lileath's bathwater and Kerillian finds this hilarious. The daemon keeps whispering at him to become more bloodthirsty.

Kerillian is cursed and can't go home after witnessing something she shouldn't. She feels immense guilt over helping cause Ubersreik by attacking reinforcements she thought threatened the future she witnessed in dreams. By VT2 she's been having an identity crisis that either manifests in her going further into the waywatcher path, devoting herself to the High elf or Druchii classes, or going full on tree worshipper with the Sister of Thorns. She's also become less of an rear end in a top hat after Drachenfels and VT2 and has more common ground with Bardin and Kruber.

Sienna was a raging addict in 1, and in 2 she's gone even crazier with each class being a different kind of crazy. She hasn't had much change apart from her addiction getting worse, though devoting herself to Myrmidia could see her becoming more of a religious fanatic.

Saltspyre was vindicated in his ratmen research in VT1 and yet is still kind of an outsider in the witch hunters. He either stays as a captain with free reign to run his own jobs fighting skaven, becomes disillusioned and turns bounty hunter to fight independent of the Order, or he falls into despair and goes fanatic. Drachenfels scared the poo poo out of him and he's been even more paranoid than usual with his batshit insane desire to attack the Chaos Wastes. I'm betting he's the next DLC class and I'm thinking he'll be a Warrior Priest to try and restore his faith.

Bardin was looking for Karak Zorn to atone for not warning his dwarf hold fast enough and losing his son in a fight with skaven. His wife divorced him and his daughter lives far away and has little in common with him. He's always cheerful but definitely feeling burnt out after two games worth. As a ranger outcast he still feels he can't go home without atonement. As an iron breaker he is coping with loss by falling back on nostalgia for his older armour and past glory. As a Slayer he's given up all hope of seeing his family and he wants to die in battle. As engineer he's coping with loss by focusing on his love of mechanical crafts. He still tries to be cheerful but the world is weighing him down and he's a lot more tired these days.

Well, if I really HAVE to shoot you in the bollocks to shut you up, then I guess I'll need to, post-haste, for everyone else's sake.
Admittedly my memory of VT1 is hazy but I think the deal with Stormdorf is that the U5/4 are a hair too late and only arrive after the deal has been struck between the Skaven and Rotbloods, from the skaven chieftains banter during the fight. Presumably the Skittergate then was under construction but wasn’t built in time for chaos to show up until Helmgart.

As for Kerillian, it’s more what she did as opposed to saw, I think - something about her killing a dark elf refugee who was sacrificing sprites to Hekarti (something of a no no to the wood elves even if the dark elves were tolerated guests at the time). Problem was a) said refugee was popular and had friends who escaped and b) Kerillian got cocky and bull-rushed in to solo the encounter. So when the dead refugees friends claim it was just a murder and there was nothing shady going on honest, Kerillian is not believed and exiled from the forests.

Yes I spent too much time reading VT lore, why do you ask.
