the book was originally published as two serials, dune and muad'dib. if you end it after paul fights jamis and they're accepted into the sietch, you get a nice coming-of-age arc for paul, they've beaten the immediate dangers, the harkonnens are back and you know there's going to be a battle later but right now everyone is stable. it's a self-contained story with a clear lead into the next one. lots of stories end on worse cliffhangers than that.

also i just finished the fortune trilogy by rachel bach and i enjoyed way more than a lot of the other newer scifi i read. lots of representation but not cranked to 11 and not nearly as quippy so it felt nice.

would recommend as a hammock read
