Fuckers just won't stay in hotel quarantine. Note that the federal government wants to eventually scale back the hotel quarantine system and move towards a home quarantine system for vaxxed people and it's 100% certain that a lot of people just won't stick it out, so that's destined to be a shitstorm as well.quote:A woman in quarantine after returning from Sydney allegedly scaled fourth-storey balconies to access an outside staircase of the Pacific Hotel in Cairns to escape quarantine, Queensland police say. On a side note I wasn't aware that "unregulated high-risk activity" was a crime, I was certainly guilty of that quite often when I was a youngster

I appreciate the idea that a lot of people would find it really hard even with a regular exercise routine. I do most of my fitness stuff inside but I like a good walk around the streets or in nature if I'm lucky. People who say going for a walk outside cures or even helps depression can take a long walk off a short bridge but it helps me personally a lot of the time when I'm a bit fuckbrained. No excuse for loving off from quarantine but I see where the other poster is coming from.

Infinitum posted:Does anyone have any good resources/examples for what a modern resume should look like? Context: I'm a technical white-collar 'professional' so yours may differ. Mine is two pages, and has the following catogies, in order and in rough % of a page (total = 200%)
You'll note that, as someone 10+ years of experience, it prioritises what hiring managers actually care about at this stage in my life. Prioitise based on your stage of professional life, but put yourself in their shoes and think about what the really care about. You'll also note that I don't make reference to referees - my logic here is that if they're asking for referees you've already got the job, and no one was rejected because their resume didn't contain them. Besides, it forces them to contact you for details, which lets you butter up and prepare your referees to give a great response for you. I have titles in a soft/semi-dark blue (not far off the dark mode blue links at the top of this forum, actually), with each section having a blue line between its title and the section below. This softly delinearates each section without wasting much space. I use differnt font sizes as well as that colour to denote headings, job description subheadings. The key here is to maximise the use of space. Work wide and keep it dense without it blurring together. With each role, I put the title on the left and the duration on the right. In that, I then provide an italics 2 or 3 sentence spiel of my job description (3 lines or so max). Below that, I list 2-4 headline projects that I worked on, with a one-sentence summary of the project and 3ish dot points summarising key details. I break this rule on the oldest job where I just put 3 major projects as dot-points without providing detail. The key here is to bias detail towards most recent work, and graudally make it less detailed towards the end. Now, the key point and what I was going to originally write before I got carried away: When summarising what you did on a job, do not just write generic fluff. Numbers and other quantifiiable detail is gold. This is the #1 resume tip I picked up. When I'm doing a project, I write out 4 sentences in line with the STAR model. What was the situation that created the project? What was the job I was tasked? What actions did I take? What result did these actions project? This forces you to list out actual details, and you should put numbers (quantities to demonstrate scale, cost savings to demonstrate return on investment, etc.) where possible. Then I take that spiel, and invert it and shorten it so that it's a results-led, punchy comment. So I might say: S - A new customer placed a $100 order for widgets but our production line was running slower than predicted and the customer was threatening to pull the contract T - I was tasked with indetifying the choke-points in the production line so we could speed it up A - I looked at each step and quantified the inputs, duration and outputs. I then mapped out a production flow that highlighted the choke points and targetted efforts to epxand their capacity R - Production increased by 20% and we kept the contract. The customer specifically called out our good efforts at addressing their concerns and they placed 3 more orders for the rest of the year as a result. Now invert it and make it punchy: Delivered a 20% improvement to production throughput of widgets by performing a critical path production throughput analysis to address incerasing demands worth $400/year in sales. Congrats, you've just made a sexy description that includes figures that make hiring managers and HR impressed. The best part is that when they invetiably say 'Hey Infinitum, we could really do with 20% higher widget production as that's worth *checks notes* $600/year for us. Can you proivde more detail on what your critical path production throughput analysis included?' you have all the answers right there. You've done your interview prep! That one technique wrote my resume, basically. It changed it from generic bland "Improved production throughput of widgets by identifying and removing the slow parts of the production line" style mush to punchy, quantifiable results that I delivered to my company. That is really the key to what I think took my resume from average to strong. Also, read the resume thread in BFC, noting that some conventions are US-centric (for exmaple, 2 pages here is pretty standard IMO). Nam Taf fucked around with this message at 14:16 on Jul 6, 2021 |

Nam Taf posted:Context: I'm a technical white-collar 'professional' so yours may differ. This is all really good advice. As a hiring manager though I have to say that I disagree with the use of multiple fonts/colours/italics etc to delineate sections of your resume as this can create a lot of visual noise that can make your resume less readable. You don't need to waste valuable space on there putting your address, just put your city name. Same deal with references, having "references supplied by request" is enough. Oh and it seems obvious but don't put an email on there that is something ridiculous sounding like dickbutt@gmail because it will get your resume put in the no thanks pile. I feel dumb writing that but it's crazy how many times it's come up in short-listing for me. Check out askamanager.org for further advice on cover letters and interviews. She's American but there's some great free resources there.

There’s only one font (3? sizes of the same font), very little italics, and a single colour besides black. Maybe I’ll lorem ipsum it tomorrow and upload it because I’m curious as to your thoughts, since I think in only b&w it looks less readable. That said, if you do use colour please for the love of god print it to PDF in greyscale and b&w to make sure it doesn’t look terrible if a prospective recruiter does that to it. Yeah no worries, I have PM's if you want to flick it to me for a look that way. What I meant by use of colours/fonts/italics etc is if you do use them, use them sparingly. I'm not saying never ever do it, just be mindful that it can do the opposite of what you are trying to use them for if you go overboard.
