The other rule is to cut the plug off a bad appliance when throwing it out. Don't want someone fishing it out, plugging it in, and finding out why I threw it out.

Had a similar thing happening once. One day, all of a sudden the back cover of my phone simply popped off. And just wouldn't stay on afterwards. At first I thought I'd somehow damaged the lugs that keep it in place or something, but those seemed fine. It was only after some hours that I realised it was because the battery had swollen up just a little bit. Some hours during which I was still carrying the thing in my pocket. After that I gave it to a friend, because he wanted to see if he could get it to catch fire by hitting it with a hammer. He certainly could.

This was a multiple fatality accident. Can’t find how many, just the RCMP guy for the scene saying “multiple, confirmed” right after.

Sometimes that's not enough. I had to do that for a recalled dehumidifier once but one of the junk trucks which roam the neighborhood snagged it not three minutes after I set it out for the city's appliance recovery folks to pick up. I am absolutely certain that they just stuck a new plug on it and resold it since they were looking at the cut cord very intently and checking over the whole thing. Should have glued one of these on it I guess.

I tossed an old oven out that was a fire hazard. I drew big X's in sharpie and wrote "DO NOT USE - SCRAP ONLY" on it a few times. If someone burns their house down after that, they were doing it on purpose.

If it makes you feel any better, whenever I go to the scrapyard there is someone dropping off a refrigeration coil of some kind so they could have just taken it to get a few bucks in scrap value.

The guys in the trucks usually do that but this guy really inspected the crap out of that dehumidifier before picking it up and putting it in the cab of his truck (not the precarious pile of various metal items in the trailer or bed). The scrap guys generally dgaf about keeping things intact. It doesn't happen anymore because the city moved to an on-call collection and because nobody has any CRTs but there used to be a real problem of the scrap guys ripping open the housing of TVs and then smashing the tube to grab just the copper coil, leaving a wonderful spot of broken phosphor-covered lead-carrying glass in people's yards.

I had a fridge with an icemaker that failed while under warranty. Called up the company, they offered to refund the whole thing, I just had to cut the power cord and strip off the serial number sticker and send it to them as proof of destruction. I put a new cord on and sold it as-is on Craigslist and got a new fridge plus $500 in my pocket

We also had to repeatedly run people off from diving our dumpster for stuff because yes, while there may well have been stuff in there that was salvagable with a good deal of laundering, there was also a shitload of broken glass in there. We often had to lay a great big board of wood almost as big as a table top in there so we could stand on it as we used our weight to crush the contents down. On the subject of sorting donations, that was potentially dangerous as well. There are far too many things to list so I'll simply say that if you could put a knife in something, we probably found a knife in there while sorting at one time or another.

Witnessed this today The cherry picker had been parked at the slope probably at 15:00 and I was walking past at 18:00 when it had rolled over the fence. It's a swelter here right now and sun had been shining directly at the machine in the evening, which seems to have caused the brake fluids to start leaking. There was another bywalker already there calling the company and we put some fence stones in front of the tire so it wouldn't creep into the crossroads right below. Always use chocks, my friends!

We only raced them up and down the toy aisles after hours when the customers left. To brake you would have to quickly turn the wheels 90 degrees and you could skid to a stop. But yeah lol, it was always unsafe as hell but we were invincible high school kids so nothing bad could ever happen.
