The world as will and idea

https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2021/7/28/soaring-tortilla-prices-hit-struggling-mexican-households-hard

quote:

Mexico City, Mexico – For 69-year-old Maria Eugenia Aguilera, her weekly shop has come with nasty sticker shocks over the last year.

Prices have risen “suddenly”, she says, for basic staples like tortillas – the corn-based flatbread that is ubiquitous on dining tables across Mexico.

The price hikes are so frequent that Aguilera, who lives on the periphery of Mexico City, no longer buys them at her local grocery store. She travels further afield to Centro de Abastos – the central food market that supplies much of the country, where she gets more bang for her peso.

“My daughters and I travel there together and pool our money,” she told Al Jazeera. “We can get a little more each that way.”

Before the pandemic, Aguilera said she paid 13-14 pesos ($0.65 – $0.70) for a kilo of tortillas. Now she’s lucky to find them for less than 20 pesos ($1.00).

Those price pressures are felt by ordinary people across Mexico.

In the first two weeks of July a kilo of tortillas cost 13.5 percent more than they did a year earlier, marking the sharpest price increase since March 2012, according to the national Consumer Price Index. In Mexico City tortilla prices rose from 14.47 pesos to as high as 20 pesos.

Like a lot of the pre-pandemic economic problems COVID poured a tanker full of gasoline on an already burning building, turning something that was already a stretch but doable into something that is increasingly slipping out of reach for most working adults.

Like, no one gets a heart attack or slips and bangs their head on a counter or shower rod or something. They just get to impose their awful will on everyone until they turn to dust. War with China instantly wipes out trillions of dollars of Number. It would never be allowed by the people with hands on the real levers of power.

the last 100 years have been a continuous US war against communism, which the idiots in charge thought they won in 1992 and are only now realizing they actually lost to china. china isn't even seriously threatening US resource extraction as yet we're already embroiled in an escalating trade war and performing military exercises off their coast. we'll see what happens when the shortages really kick in

I noticed I didn't get the "and a half" part of my overtime, because I had the audacity to take PTO during that pay period and I didn't work 80 hours even though that day was more than 8 hours, so no overtime for me :smug:

I hate this country so much. There's always a loophole or carve-out for the elite to ride though.

I'm going to look up the labor code myself. I'm pretty sure that shift>8 hours means I get OT regardless of the pay period. If it annoys HR, so be it, they're probably all barely working anyway gently caress them.

Edit:

California Labor Code §510.

(a) Eight hours of labor constitutes a day’s work. Any work in excess of eight hours in one workday and any work in excess of 40 hours in any one workweek and the first eight hours worked on the seventh day of work in any one workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay for an employee. Any work in excess of 12 hours in one day shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay for an employee. In addition, any work in excess of eight hours on any seventh day of a workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay of an employee. Nothing in this section requires an employer to combine more than one rate of overtime compensation in order to calculate the amount to be paid to an employee for any hour of overtime work. The requirements of this section do not apply to the payment of overtime compensation to an employee working pursuant to any of the following:

(1) An alternative workweek schedule adopted pursuant to Section 511.

(2) An alternative workweek schedule adopted pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement pursuant to Section 514.

(3) An alternative workweek schedule to which this chapter is inapplicable pursuant to Section 554.

(b) Time spent commuting to and from the first place at which an employee’s presence is required by the employer shall not be considered to be a part of a day’s work, when the employee commutes in a vehicle that is owned, leased, or subsidized by the employer and is used for the purpose of ridesharing, as defined in Section 522 of the Vehicle Code.

(c) This section does not affect, change, or limit an employer’s liability under the workers’ compensation law.
(Amended by Stats. 1999, Ch. 134, Sec. 4. Effective January 1, 2000.)
