I hate this country so much. There's always a loophole or carve-out for the elite to ride though.

I'm going to look up the labor code myself. I'm pretty sure that shift>8 hours means I get OT regardless of the pay period. If it annoys HR, so be it, they're probably all barely working anyway gently caress them.

Edit:

California Labor Code §510.

(a) Eight hours of labor constitutes a day’s work. Any work in excess of eight hours in one workday and any work in excess of 40 hours in any one workweek and the first eight hours worked on the seventh day of work in any one workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay for an employee. Any work in excess of 12 hours in one day shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay for an employee. In addition, any work in excess of eight hours on any seventh day of a workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay of an employee. Nothing in this section requires an employer to combine more than one rate of overtime compensation in order to calculate the amount to be paid to an employee for any hour of overtime work. The requirements of this section do not apply to the payment of overtime compensation to an employee working pursuant to any of the following:

(1) An alternative workweek schedule adopted pursuant to Section 511.

(2) An alternative workweek schedule adopted pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement pursuant to Section 514.

(3) An alternative workweek schedule to which this chapter is inapplicable pursuant to Section 554.

(b) Time spent commuting to and from the first place at which an employee’s presence is required by the employer shall not be considered to be a part of a day’s work, when the employee commutes in a vehicle that is owned, leased, or subsidized by the employer and is used for the purpose of ridesharing, as defined in Section 522 of the Vehicle Code.

(c) This section does not affect, change, or limit an employer’s liability under the workers’ compensation law.
(Amended by Stats. 1999, Ch. 134, Sec. 4. Effective January 1, 2000.)

As someone who doesn’t live in California, I know 2 things about their labor laws:

Shifts over 8hrs are OT, and companies can’t mandate footwear dress codes except for like… safety purposes (steel toe boots for a work site).

Can't see any possible implications to a massive increase in personal consumption during a period of rapidly rising inflation with little or no wage growth outside of the upper levels of the economy. Seems fine. Can't possibly be a bad thing.

there is real enforcement. ships are old school regulated. as in knowledgeable people from
various bodies, competent authorities, can show up unannounced, inspect to the standard of SOLAS, and can give out consequences.

the vessel would be arrested. as in that would actually be the outcome.

that really only stops, and here I include even in utterly corrupt states, at real state failure. like this regulation is such a big deal that even the neo liberal reforms since Reagan just left that poo poo wholly intact and don’t gently caress with it.

WHERE THE FUCK IS MY MONEY
My wife is looking at new jobs and it seems a bunch of the position's minimum salaries haven't been updated to reflect the new cost of living in the area. What once would've been a salary that could've paid for a decent family house mortgage at 20% of gross income is now more like 34% and that's just because of this year's house price increase. She's going to have to ask for a higher salary to be able to take any of the positions lol.

in places with unionized longshoremen, labor reps go down to vessels and check with the crew that contracts and international law are being followed. particularly on the us West coast that’s seriously business (ILWU doesn’t gently caress around).

it’s occasionally humorous to watch people not in the know bitch about labor not knowing a rep is sitting there.

but that’s obviously more spotty internationally than flag and port state enforcement.
