This album is a trip. Not what I was expecting.

oxytocin is giving me NIN vibes even. Goldwing is gorgeous, the production is DOPE. I’m gonna need to let this album digest a bit. Really impressed and I didn’t like the singles that much.

Agreed that the title track needs to be a single.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

You know, earlier tonight I was having a conversation with a friend about Stephen Curry and how he’s changed basketball simply by playing exactly the way he wants and works for him and was just so good that the NBA sort of changed to match him. He’s not the only guy and he’s not the first guy to be a great 3 shooter but a combination of the right team, the right time and the right skills made him one of the most iconic, celebrated players of the era

Billie Eilish is like Steph Curry. I started up this album and to me, this still sounds kinda radical and like some brilliant experimental artist that gets buzz on Pitchfork but never finds real success, but this is pop music. Pop music has moved to where Billie is. That’s not to say that this isn’t an evolution from her last album but she’s not trying to modulate her sound to try and get more radio play or Grammies. She’s making her music and watching the world bend towards her because it resonates

Edit: in this extended metaphor Taylor Swift is Lebron James, Lady Gaga is Kobe Bryant and Olivia Rodrigo is Giannis

LeBron has basically been the best player in basketball since he joined the league (right out of high school, making him a wunderkind too) and is very good about developing his brand and changing the teams around him as the circumstances in the league change. As he’s grown older he’s become a leader across the league and is outspoken in favor of players rights. He fits with Taylor because of their consistency, their longevity, the fact that you cannot write them out and because both appreciate wine.

I changed my mind about Olivia, I think she’s actually Zion Williamson, who entered the league as one of the most exciting young players because of his rare combination of brain and athleticism (the man is built like a linebacker and flies like a gymnast) and is sort of a throwback to the 1990s.

Gaga is Kobe because he’ll probably never be i the conversation about the true GOAT but for the guys in the league Kobe is the guy they all idolized growing up. Kobe also showed a desire to be a sort of renaissance man; he was the first NBA player to win an Oscar.

I see, thank you for explaining.

Now I have a comparison I heard that I'm still not sure what to think of. Someone mentioned the Lorde/Olivia Rodrigo comparisons back when Driver's License was her big hit, before Deja Vu and Good 4 U dropped, and he made this comparison:

"Green Light" is to "Since U Been Gone" as "Driver's License" is to "Behind These Hazel Eyes"".

Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

I think pop culture inherently resists simplistic narratives like these and everything will feel different in 3 years when Olivia Rodrigo has been cancelled, Billie Eilish has 3 songs in the Top 40 Christian Contemporary and Lorde has been convicted on 12 counts of domestic terrorism.

Just listened to Happier Than Ever. I agree with the currently developing consensus that Eilish has surpassed expectations with this album. I never fully got on board with the first one actually, but this definitely impressed me. And I'm glad it has those early releases "My Future" and "Therefore I Am" because I was impressed with those when they came out.

Like everyone else, I have to say, that title track -- wow, that one hits like an atomic bomb. I'm glad it wasn't a single yet because it's a great climax. Like she finally just unloads. But it does have what it takes to be a post-album release single.

Yeah the album is quite good on first listen. I was not a fan of most of the singles when they were released but enjoyed them quite a bit more while listening through the full album although My Future might be my least favorite track. Going to echo that the title track is one of her best ever but I also loved the closer Male Fantasy. There is just something about that super clean guitar sound that Finneas has used a few times now that tickles my brain.

Just finished listening to the new Billie album and on first reaction, its kind of more of the same but with less bangers from the first album. It was an enjoyable listen, but honestly it was way more mid than I would've hoped for.

We need a dedicated Prince thread again. That guy is on a whole other level of legendary artist and his body of work is absolutely massive to dig into, especially with all the posthumous releases from the vault.

"Tell that to Zod's snapped neck!"

It’s taken him almost a solid decade but Justin Bieber has finally displaced Baby in my head with another, even more insidious earworm. I thought I had avoided Peaches but then I heard the chorus once and that was it. That chorus is sticky like tar

I also love that Justin Bieber ends his chorus about weed and his bad-rear end bitch with a shout out to the big man upstairs. I can just foresee a million 14 year olds arguing that this song is Christian while their parents are just like “he says ‘poo poo’ in the chorus twice! God would not like that.”

Okay so I listened to Happier Than Ever

And I gotta say

Title track?

Billie should really experiment with rock more in future albums.

It's perfect as the penultimate song.

Not My Responsibility is probably some of her best writing as a great spoken word piece, oxytocin and GOLDWING are also really good, NDA has some of the album's best production, uhhh... album's good.
