Yeah some of my family were cult programmed with real hypnotic triggers. They would be put into a panic state which exercised a work ritual, and in their mind they believed they were the only person who could save the day and that they possessed some special magic that allowed only them to complete whatever repetitive task they were acting out in hypnosis. Anything I said to them didn’t matter because I was the object of their programming. Even the words “you are directly hurting me and endangering everyone around you” didn’t mean anything to them. I asked for help from some friends and they knew what to do.

I stopped talking to my libertarian friend in 2016 when he revealed that he'd voted for trump and was sending me podcasts with Scott Adams. I realized that if I kept in contact with him I would have to pretend he wasn't the dumbest person I've ever known, not just someone I disagree with politically. That didn't seem fair to either of us.

My aunt, a divorced boomer mostly living alone, had fallen down the trap. She was hopelessly illiterate with technology and would fall for scams all the time and believe everything she read on Facebook. My brother would try to talk to her but she was pretty much in her own world. She died tho. I knew some tech bro libertarian kind of guys before the 2016 who were big on trump mostly be way of being anti Clinton, but it seems they shortly became embarrassed by trump and scrubbed there social media. One of them is now in the air force or something and has a disclaimer on his social media saying his views don't reflect on that of his employer, and I think he's divorced too

Not really OP. v  vI've got a cousin, though, who used to be very argumentative and anti-immigration. Well, turns out he was recently diagnosed with aspberger's, which in his words is the reason why he was so fixated on those subjects. Sure he's still argumentative and I disagree with him a lot but that's fine. You can't expect people to have the very same opinions as your own, and if you don't see eye to eye with someone in your close social circles you can always agree to disagree. The phrase "can we talk about something else, because I don't think we're ever going to agree on this topic?" comes to mind.

I did. I genuinely lost my mind about 3 years ago. I ended up in the hospital and, after a week in there, they doubted I'd be able to be let out and actually be able to live on my own like a normal adult anymore. They suggested I be admitted to a long-term care facility instead. Maybe I should have. It IS difficult for me to live a normal adult life, still. I'm much better now though, anyway. Much better. But the breakdown cost me all of my friends and my spouse and I've been living in isolation ever since. Gotta nip that in the bud soon.

Nevermind that her son is the only one in the family to go to jail for, guess what, money laundering.... Lots of stories from that part of the family that I just pretend doesn't exist.

If you live in the American South, you have a significant sized group of friends and family on social media, and you're not a shithead, its a near guarantee you've had to just completely mute a bunch of people you used to like. Honestly, the 2008-09 wave was bigger than '16 for me. I had a bunch of friends and acquaintances that just completely broke when it became apparent Obama was going to win. Folks who had been completely apolitical became super racist nonstop raving conspiracy theorists. Memorably, one of the most outspoken progressive feminist girls from my high school turned full stupid hick racist in the space of 3 months, at the age of 26, after Obama beat Hillary in the primaries. She literally started acting performatively country/white trashy despite being raised in a well off suburb. She was one of those hardcore PUMA types and is now a full Trump chud. My mom has gone kinda crazy, but it appears to have mostly been induced by her intense hatred for Hillary Clinton. She was a steady dem voter since 1976, but voted Trump in 16 because she just viscerally loving hates Hillary and has since sometime in the mid-early 90s for unclear reasons. My dad is paranoid and worries about "chicoms".

He even looked the part being bald at 24 with an Abe Lincoln chinstrap. But at the same time he was fit and healthy, outgoing and friendly and had no problems with women. It took me a while to notice the problems it was causing him. He was ALWAYS short of cash. I bought him a coffee one night because he had no change, the very next week the first thing he did was give me the change back. I didn't ask for it or even want it. The coffee was piss-poor crap from a vending machine. Then we met a friend of his one night at a bar, he said something i didn't hear, his friend sighed and chuckled and handed him £20. This guy had a job so I wondered why he was constantly broke. Then it hit me, EVERY WEEK he was talking 2 or 3 newly released AAA big budget games! He never ever replayed a game and was somehow confused that I had bought Fallout 4 in the summer and was still playing at christmas. He thought it was strange that I played through Witcher 3 more than once. He wanted to live the lifestyle of an overpaid silicon valley nerd with too much time on their hands on the budget of someone working in a call center.

I stopped talking to my mom and sister, mainly because of Trump, but it all started when I was the only one in my direct family to graduate college and they thought I was taught Marxism during my time there. (I studied Cisco Networks and Amazon AWS). The climax of my stink with them was when I had Covid and had to go to the hospital. My mom hears that I admitted myself in and is screaming at me to get out of there because Covid is a hoax and that it was just a bad flu. All while the Doctors were sticking tubes up my dickhole and taking X-rays of my chest. After three days I finally left the hospital she tells me that I was over reacting, found out I was going to be collecting unemployment and claims I didn't deserve it (She quit her job right before Covid hit), and all sorts of other real nasty poo poo that made me crack my ping. Then finally the icing on the cake was when my mom moved in with my sister because she had nowhere else to go. My sister's boyfriend relapsed on Meth, starting tearing up my sister's house, and got mad at me when I told them the kids can stay but they were on their own. After they hung up on me I was getting death threats on my phone and from that point on they became dead to me.
