The New Empire has approached the Universal Mercantile League, proposing that the Universal Mercantile League declare war on the Sakkra Nations in exchange for over 500 trillion credits. Unlike the war with the Great Empire of Bulra, this will be a war with a great power that borders on UML space, and should not be entered into lightly. What says the Assembly?

(Ideally I'll get votes relatively quickly, leaving the program open while I decide whether to accept or reject the offer is awkward, since I can't save in the middle of it.)

Editing to add that now that I'm looking at the map from the end of the last update, while we do share a border, the only way they can get at us is via Lirr, which I assume is properly fortified on both entrances. Vijzar and Warikomi don't look like they even really have much there, so if we can just park something in Brachium (or preferably, take Olor), that's it. The war's over and it's just a matter of rolling them up, because I don't think they're really able to send forces through Meklar space. The Mrrshan will provide a minor distraction at best from the south (I know there's no north/south here but hell if I can remember which way is spinward so terrestrial compass references with up being north it is :v:), but given that they're only still kicking because we threw money at them, I don't know how much of a distraction they'll be.

I don't know what kind of technology or manufacturing base the Sakkra have, but I feel confident in saying that we've got an edge on both, we just need to actually make troopships so we can take their planets, which will put a bit of a delay on things, which we'd have anyway because we have to muster our forces. Going off half-cocked is a good way to get wrecked.

Although work on improvements to communications technology has stalled, for now, nonetheless futurists anticipate remarkable benefits to the League once improved communications are brought down in cost and thoroughly integrated into League civilian life. Improved communications should lead to a renaissance of mass culture and entertainment, helping the people of the League live more contented lives and be drawn more tightly together into a single society, messages able to criss-cross the League effectively instantaneously. What's further, integrating these technologies into the League's banking system will finally achieve a remarkable breakthrough in interstellar commerce- the ability for interstellar financial transactions to be conducted optronically, instantly transferring funds between buyers and sellers across the entire League. Currently, interstellar payment processing requires physical conveyance of currency, slowing transactions- but with a fully integrated financial network covering the entire League, commerce cannot help but boom.

News All Day Network Special Report

Thus far, relatively few Meklar fixed intelligences have applied for residency within the Universal Mercantile League- little to be wondered, given the great resources and legal privilege they enjoy within the General Oversight Combine. None, so far, have been as highly-placed as AM-715. Initially the owner of the massive Associated Metals industrial complex and the ruler of the city surrounding this complex, AM-715 grew to greater prominence within Combine government following the outbreak of war, where it was elected to a posting as an occupational governor over the planet of Korga in the Elnen system, thus both governing the conquered Bulrathi populations and controlling the primary routes of trade with the Global Republic of Nyu, also located in the Elnen system. In its term as an occupational governor, AM-715 demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for understanding Bulrathi and Nyunyu psychology, constructing public information campaigns to help reassure the inhabitants of the Elnen system of the benefits of Meklar rule. Darker, unconfirmed reports claim that AM-715 worked closely with Combine intelligence services to analyse the operational patterns of Bulrathi resistance movements and insert Meklars built with specialised infiltration frames nearly externally-indistinguishable from Bulrathi into rebel cells, there to sabotage their efforts at the critical moment. Regardless of the truth or falsity of these reports, AM-715 was eventually withdrawn from its position as an occupational governor, returning to once again focus full-time on the management of Associated Metals.

The events that follow are still unclear to News All Day Network, but it appears that legal maneuvers by AMV-18, the fixed intelligence AM-715 left behind as its deputy and viceroy while performing its duties as an occupational governor, soon led to AM-715 being dispossessed of its ownership of Associated Metals and of its influence in the Main Combine Cycle. Following these events, AM-715 has filed for permanent residency within the Universal Mercantile League, citing the predictability and stability of League legal arrangements, property holdings, and contracts as a major inducement for its decision to immigrate. Some within the Assembly have raised concerns, concerns that AM-715 has not as fully severed ties with the Main Combine Cycle as it has claimed. Given the mystery shrouding the full extent of its activities as an occupational governor, questions persist as to whether its conduct during time of war may actually be actionable under UML treaty law, or whether rumors of unethical conduct during the occupation are simply that, rumors.

Regardless of anything else, what is beyond question is AM-715's capabilities as an industrialist. It was directly responsible for the growth of Associated Metals to the position it holds today within the Combine as one of the primary suppliers of alloys and construction materials for civil construction and shipbuilding across Meklar space. Even accounting for the differences in legal regime and labor relations between the Combine and the UML, analysts anticipate that AM-715 may well be able to at least partially replicate its success should its application for residency be approved. But how did Associated Metals begin? We'll take a closer look, right after these advertisements.

Wobbly morale and heavy distraction between books, other games, and the workload from running my D&D campaign continue, so I keep on procrastinating processing the images for the next update. I apologise, but haven't forgotten this. (The fact that the trigger for the nuMoO diplomatic victory even being allowed is too restrictive doesn't help, either, heh.) That said, I'll try to listen to any requests for lower-effort lorebits to tide people over.

Speaking of the D&D campaign, getting my players' reaction when they realise that the massive light on the horizon was the town of Crecy in the war-torn kingdom of Lyonesse burning was honestly great. They're getting a first-hand look at just how horrible the invasion of Lyonesse has been for the Lyonessians... and this has, if anything, been hitting the PC who's a Lyonessian refugee even harder. Managing a genuine emotional reaction from my players is always very rewarding for me.

Came across this recently and was reading through and with one question in the back of my mind:

Why leave Xanthus and Laan untouched? I haven't played nuMoO but the space monsters can't be that powerful that they'd be too dangerous to take down with some medium sized ships by the time you had stuff like (heavy) mass drivers and better armor are they? Some of the planets in those systems seem real good and would've given a couple more lucrative core worlds and and even bigger edge over other races.
