I have a question for you electrical engineer guys cuz I don't know poo poo about electrical stuff...

I have a Ryobi generator that is 2200 starting watts and 1700 running watts, and it has two 120v outlets, will I be able to safely run my refrigerator and freezer off of it?

I will be using 25ft and 50ft 12/3 AWG extension cords with it.

You know what good food taste like and looks like. Worst case scenario you learn that you can improve it.

I mean, yes, but also rare brisket is objectively wrong. It has to be cooked to break down the gristle.

Are we talking a combined unit or two?

Look at the electrical rating on the equipment and see. They may add up to less than 1700W. If that’s the case you’re 100% golden. If more than that, but less than 2200W, you’re *probably* fine. Refrigeration equipment draws a huge starting load to get the compressor working and then not a lot after that.

If it adds up to over 2200W I wouldn’t try it, personally. If nothing else it will probably overload the minute you look away.

It's two units, fridge/freezer in the house and a freezer in the laundry room.

I can't find any wattage information on them it's just amps/volts/hertz

Fridge is 3.30/115/60

Freezer is 5.0/115/60

[e] the manual for the freezer says not to use an extension cord because a 10% difference in voltage could damage the motor.....But if I'm using an appropriate extension cord I should be fine, right? I'm gonna be using a 25' 12/3 rated at 15 amps for the freezer, and a 50' of the same for the fridge.

Ruined me on ICE cars. I think the design is bland and I can't stand Musk, but drat, I want one of his cars. Or any car that does what Tesla does. He doesn't have anything unique, just managed to bundle the lightning together long enough to get over the first big hill. But that gave a huge head start on the future.

Unless your power factor is significantly different from 1.0 (likely not true here) watts = volts* amps, you have a total of 920 watts there. Even if your power factor is poo poo, you should be fine. That amount of 12ga extension cord is fine too, that's basically the same amount of conductor that's in your walls for your fridge outlets anyways. They really aim those no extension cord rules at the people who are going to try and run it off those silly little 18ga lamp extension cords or 400ft of daisy chained 12ga between two trailers or something.

"Starting watts" is a bullshit marketing term that means little aside from what kind of inrush current it can handle, but I don't trust it much even to tell you that, I'm not sure it's standardized or that anyone follows the standard if it does exist. It's the same kind of nonsense as gross vs net horsepower, "developed" horsepower on vacuum cleaners (they take the starting inrush current and convert that so the number on the label looks more impressive, but the motor never actually makes that much power when you're using it) - lies made up to sucker people who don't read further than the big number on the front.

Exactly what I was going to say, plug in one then the other, rather than connecting them and starting the generator or plugging them both into a splitter and plugging in the splitter.

Well at least you understand the problem!

I've been in the rut lately of not meal planning my week and that needs to change. I used to plan a few meals with my wife and try to get good overlap on ingredients. Lately it's been frozen pizza, ravioli, tuna melts, or snacks for dinner. Just whatever convenient pantry food.

We discussed it and at least had the idea of making a list of good meals we like so we can just "idk what to eat, pick from here please".

I think the last new thing I made was shrimp ceviche and we were both very happy about it.

Thanks Ken, I was hoping you'd chime in! We're getting ready because it's hurricane season down here, eventually I'd like to go with a bigger generator that can hook up right to the panel but we're working with this for now. Hopefully we won't have to use it lol.

Yeah good idea about plugging them in one at a time, makes sense not to overload it if i don't have to. Wife is ordering the proper extension cords through her work account (commercial roofing) and once I get those I'll do a test run. I need to get a bigger gas can too, I don't think two gallons is gonna cut it for any decent length of time, altho I always make sure to fill the cars up before a storm hits just in case.

I will watch exactly as much as I have watched in the last 20 years. I am just not their demographic.

Rhyno - on car chat. It is normal and sensible for the gut check yourself on something like a car purchase. Don't regret selling the Speed6 though. I enjoyed mine while I had it but I don't miss it. The thing was probably at the bottom of the depreciation curve and will never become anything. The truck you bought is probably worth more now than when you got it.

Definitely keep searching for a fun car though. Life without something fun to drive is sincerely dull and boring. The weirdest and most unexpected thing for me is that I enjoy driving my dumb body on frame Toyota (Lexus) as much as I enjoy my M3. Both cars are fun in different ways because they get used for different things.

Keep in mind that there is some DRM associated with 4k and the pc or card has to be LICENSED to play 4k from streaming services. I have a fully 4k capable Intel compute stick and my TV does not recognize and process 4k streams from it with HDR or anything. And it's obvious, you switch over to the Amazon app and watch the same show and the little HDR icon pops up at the beginning, and the picture is lit completely different and far superior.

I'm not sure how to figure it out, as some cards and pcs are supposed to be able to do it, I just know mine doesn't, and most generic computers won't either. It's all supposed to prevent ripping in 4k with the high end lighting, but all it does is piss off consumers.

Here's a rundown: https://www.newegg.com/insider/how-to-watch-4k-video-on-a-windows-10-pc/
