The two year draft for virtually all 18-20 year olds makes much more sense when you're a giant colonial empire who just lost Alsace Lorraine, but a bit less when your "existential enemies" are 80 times smaller than you and have a smaller defense budget than the new York police.

Probably if you lumped all the AmeriCorp, Teach for America, etc programs together you could scrape together a good civilian service program. Add in some benefits like time served counts for experience requirements for paramedic/teaching certifications, or maybe counts as some amount of college credit, and it would be a viable gap years program for high school graduates.

On conscription talk, I remember that the only thing really on the table for the US is a limited skills-based conscription. Basically, if they had a hard shortage on medical personnel they could conscript specifically for that.

Just a little over a decade ago I was on a camping/road trip with a friend and one of the places we camped there was a couple from Europe in the site next to ours. I believe they said they were from Switzerland but it's been 10 years so I don't recall exactly but it was a mandatory service country and I don't think any other mainland European nations have that. Anyway, my friend and I were curious about what that service entailed and they explained that you could delay it but you're mandatory service had to be fulfilled by the time you hit 30 and also that you had options outside of military branches. I believe the fellow said he chose to be a paramedic, with his ultimate goal to be a nurse.

From that point on I've always looked at mandatory service in the way of there are so many different service options we should not limit ourselves to just military. If someone wants to be a firefighter or a nurse, even police, we should have those be options. That way it is more palatable to everyone, people will have the opportunity to try out something that maybe they didn't think they could or were afraid they would have it turn into a lifelong commitment for any reason. I also felt/feel it would go a long way to get people to understand how goddamned difficult a lot of these services are that we take for granted.

Of course I'm not an economist so I have no idea if something like that would be even feasible at a federal level. Surely you would have less of an issue in terms of underemployment for crucial services if you have a constant influx of labour and the people that want to make it their career would probably still do that

It depends a lot on how it's structured. Germany has (had? I think they were talking about killing their conscription requirement) universal male conscription with a Civil Service alternative. I had a friend years ago who did his service via that civil requirement and basically ended up photocopying patient files at a local hospital for a year. It did him gently caress all good and to hear him tell it the hospital basically used his "service" as a way to avoid hiring someone to do the same thing.

I'm sure there are ways to craft a universal, equitable system that would put young people to productive work in their communities while also giving them valuable experience that they could employ later in life.

I'm equally sure that there would be a ton of people out there looking to exploit that giant pool of non-voluntary labor.

edit: it also doesn't fix the underlying problem that many proponents of universal conscription are keen to address, which is the major bifurcation between families who join the military and those that doesn't, and the attendant willingness of voters and politicians to waste servicemembers lives on dumb poo poo. It's way easier to support a forever war when it's not your relatives on their fifth deployment.

the last great success of the mass draft was the french revolution, where their enemies, kings who didnt like gettin king heads chopped off (austria spain prussia britain piedmont and the dutch), could field armies that could kill 2 frenchies for every austrian or whatever that died. that lasted for like a few years and then their enemies started doing it

the levee en masse fixed this by simply outnumbering the combined coalition army of all those separate professional armies by 3 to 1

so the mere fact of conscription is different from the signature french military innovation, because its one or two orders of magnitude fewer peeps per capita. the revolutionary french really fuckin conscripted nearly every able-bodied man

Seems like they were "forced" to do it because their payment processor said they would stop working with them and multiple VCs passed because of the "liability issue" of potentially allowing minors to make accounts + lots of payment processors and VCs will just straight up not work with adult content providers.

This will absolutely kill the company, though. lol at the idea of going to OnlyFans to pay $29.99 per month for short exclusive clips of your favorite celebrities' Snapchat stream.

I'm honestly, legitimately surprised that it's not just porn. I honestly thought that it was just a porn site. Reading this news would be like if someone had a story about PornHub removing all adult content to focus on their baking shows.

So now they're, what, shittier Patreon?

I'm wondering why they didn't just do whatever it is all the actual porn companies do to process payments. God knows there's no shortage of paid porn on the internet.

I gotta say, I did about a year of non-military national service working at a hospital and it was great for me(mostly I just helped with moving paperwork around, but it was still one of the periods of my life I remember happily). I can't say it would necessarily be great for everyone, but I feel like a lot of younger people who're unsure where to go in life might definitely benefit from being offered a selection of things to try out without having to struggle through writing CV's or waiting for open positions or potentially directing their entire life towards it in terms of education, etc.

Hell, if I was offered a chance to try a similar program now, just to try out a job for a year, non-binding at the end, without having to deal with the loving job search circus, I'd jump at it.

there's a good BMW post in the r/relationships thread that I'm going to cross post here

My wife (28/F) of three years called me (35/M) boring for my lack of ambition and being content in life.

quote:

I love my job. It's close to home and has flexible hours. The pay ain't bad either considering I have no degree. My wife and I with our income can afford a good living. We have two kids. A son and daughter. My son is 4 (we had a kid early on before marriage. Was a happy accident) and my daughter 2.

We were talking Fri and I mentioned my boss was leaving. My wife asked if i was gunna take his spot. I laughed and said "hell loving no. Who wants it?". This led to a fight. My wife accused me of lacking ambition and said I'm boring for just accepting things in life. She said it's insane she has to be the breadwinner, she has to claw her way up the corporate ladder. She's ambitious, she constantly takes OT and tries to get promoted but, I've been working same role, same job for 7 years and just accept it. She thinks i've become boring. My carefree attitude makes her bored. Ambition is sexy, it's what men should be. She said if I grew a backbone I could be making 6 figures by now. We could be living in New York or have a bigger house.

I don't understand her logic. Genuinely don't. I'm happy with my life. I'm content. Why do I have to be a corporate shark constantly seeking my way up the ladder. I just want to my 9-6 and go home. and see my family. I like having my weekends. I like being happy. We have money. For once we aren't struggling life.

How can I tell my wife I'm just happy? Why is someone being happy seen as wrong?

Some context

quote:

Yes. She doesn't make much more then me. 10k ( I make 48k. She makes around 60k). She's a salaried manager at a big box retailer.

I can't afford to move to the big city and live a life of luxury. It's just never happening. She thinks if we both climb the ladder in a few years we'll be making 6 figures and living in a mansion.

Update: My wife (28/F) of 3 years called me (35/M)boring for my lack of ambition and being content in life.

quote:

Well, it's a divorce. We're just two different people going different directions.

So, her intial reasons were envy. She admits she was envious I could just accept my life the way it is and be happy with so little. I could be happy never moving up in my career. She was envious I could go home happy and not stressed and not dread the work week. She never has that luxury. She's always stressed, always feeling worthless for getting such a late start in life.

But, the real reason: she's not happy with her life. She admits to me she can not be happy with this life. Living in the suburbs, being a soccer mom, this life isnt for her. She tried making it work but, she can't do it. She wants to constantly claw her way up the ladder, constantly drive to improve. She wants a big house, be rich, be somebody and not just live. She wants someone who is equally as ambitious and not, me, someone who is content. She wants to be with someone who is willing to take major risks, spur of the moment plans.

To her it's like a constant pressure. She doesn't want to stay in one place, do the same thing forever. I'm the exact opposite. I don't want to constantly be moving, constantly be doing more. I want to be happy and live a quiet humble life. She can not understand how I could want too and I could not fathom why she wouldnt either.

So we're left at an impasse. We both have decided we can't go on. It isn't fair to either of us nor our kids.

Not a happy update I guess.

So for OnlyFans apparently Mastercard has laid out new rules on their requirements for adult streaming services to follow or lose the ability to process payments. It includes having real time monitoring of every stream to ensure a minor never appears on it and to require age verification and signed consent of every person who ever shows up on camera. That's pretty much impossible to do just from a workforce standpoint so either the porn or the money goes.
