The two year draft for virtually all 18-20 year olds makes much more sense when you're a giant colonial empire who just lost Alsace Lorraine, but a bit less when your "existential enemies" are 80 times smaller than you and have a smaller defense budget than the new York police.

Probably if you lumped all the AmeriCorp, Teach for America, etc programs together you could scrape together a good civilian service program. Add in some benefits like time served counts for experience requirements for paramedic/teaching certifications, or maybe counts as some amount of college credit, and it would be a viable gap years program for high school graduates. On conscription talk, I remember that the only thing really on the table for the US is a limited skills-based conscription. Basically, if they had a hard shortage on medical personnel they could conscript specifically for that.

I believe they said they were from Switzerland but it's been 10 years so I don't recall exactly but it was a mandatory service country and I don't think any other mainland European nations have that. Anyway, my friend and I were curious about what that service entailed and they explained that you could delay it but you're mandatory service had to be fulfilled by the time you hit 30 and also that you had options outside of military branches. I believe the fellow said he chose to be a paramedic, with his ultimate goal to be a nurse. It depends a lot on how it's structured. Germany has (had? I think they were talking about killing their conscription requirement) universal male conscription with a Civil Service alternative. I had a friend years ago who did his service via that civil requirement and basically ended up photocopying patient files at a local hospital for a year. It did him gently caress all good and to hear him tell it the hospital basically used his "service" as a way to avoid hiring someone to do the same thing. I'm sure there are ways to craft a universal, equitable system that would put young people to productive work in their communities while also giving them valuable experience that they could employ later in life. I'm equally sure that there would be a ton of people out there looking to exploit that giant pool of non-voluntary labor. edit: it also doesn't fix the underlying problem that many proponents of universal conscription are keen to address, which is the major bifurcation between families who join the military and those that doesn't, and the attendant willingness of voters and politicians to waste servicemembers lives on dumb poo poo. It's way easier to support a forever war when it's not your relatives on their fifth deployment.

This will absolutely kill the company, though. lol at the idea of going to OnlyFans to pay $29.99 per month for short exclusive clips of your favorite celebrities' Snapchat stream.

I'm honestly, legitimately surprised that it's not just porn. I honestly thought that it was just a porn site. Reading this news would be like if someone had a story about PornHub removing all adult content to focus on their baking shows. So now they're, what, shittier Patreon? I'm wondering why they didn't just do whatever it is all the actual porn companies do to process payments. God knows there's no shortage of paid porn on the internet.

The quote block ends immediately before the sentence which clarifies that creators can still post adult content, so this seems more like a “rando fans can’t send dick pics” than OF not realizing they’re a porn platform.

Aces High posted:From that point on I've always looked at mandatory service in the way of there are so many different service options we should not limit ourselves to just military. If someone wants to be a firefighter or a nurse, even police, we should have those be options. That way it is more palatable to everyone, people will have the opportunity to try out something that maybe they didn't think they could or were afraid they would have it turn into a lifelong commitment for any reason. I also felt/feel it would go a long way to get people to understand how goddamned difficult a lot of these services are that we take for granted. I gotta say, I did about a year of non-military national service working at a hospital and it was great for me(mostly I just helped with moving paperwork around, but it was still one of the periods of my life I remember happily). I can't say it would necessarily be great for everyone, but I feel like a lot of younger people who're unsure where to go in life might definitely benefit from being offered a selection of things to try out without having to struggle through writing CV's or waiting for open positions or potentially directing their entire life towards it in terms of education, etc. Hell, if I was offered a chance to try a similar program now, just to try out a job for a year, non-binding at the end, without having to deal with the loving job search circus, I'd jump at it. So for OnlyFans apparently Mastercard has laid out new rules on their requirements for adult streaming services to follow or lose the ability to process payments. It includes having real time monitoring of every stream to ensure a minor never appears on it and to require age verification and signed consent of every person who ever shows up on camera. That's pretty much impossible to do just from a workforce standpoint so either the porn or the money goes.
